Hearts And Minds, The American Revolution In South Carolina: A Study In The Application Of Militia Violence To Influence Politics, Paul K. Reimann
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines both the military and political aspects of the genesis and application of militia violence in South Carolina immediately prior to and throughout the Revolution. It assesses the affects of violence on the part of both Patriots and Loyalists in controlling the support provided by the colonists to either army in South Carolina. Warfare in the Southern Colonies transformed, for the patriots, from the accepted European style of battle to the more successful employment of the frontier militia in the role of partisans.
Hearts and Minds argues that the use of violence by the rebel militia was an …
Italy And Italians Through American Eyes, 1861-1881, Dennis M. Bench
Italy And Italians Through American Eyes, 1861-1881, Dennis M. Bench
History Theses & Dissertations
American perceptions of Italy and Italians between 1861 and 1881 were characterized by competing and conflicting images. These two decades in the late nineteenth century demonstrated the transitional nature of American attitudes towards Italians as contact between the two peoples increased. American travelers went to Italy initially to recreate the journeys of educated Europeans of the Grand Tours of the eighteenth century. By the 1860s this style of travel was on the decline to be replaced by traveling based on exploring the "real" Italy. However, the two styles overlapped and resulted in conflicting and complementary images. In part this was …
Drawbridge Diplomacy: Romanian-American Relations, 1963-1968, Brett A. Jerasa
Drawbridge Diplomacy: Romanian-American Relations, 1963-1968, Brett A. Jerasa
History Theses & Dissertations
Entering the White House in 1963, Lyndon B. Johnson pursued a policy of "bridge building" to Eastern Europe, finding agreement on small issues of economics and foreign relations in order to decrease tension between East and West. Johnson targeted Romania as the show case for bridge building because of its growing autonomy from the Soviet Union. Romania's policies of rapid industrialization and foreign policy independence offered potent possibilities. However, Johnson's bridge building faced many difficulties. His administration pursued a dual Cold War policy: he fought communist belligerency in Vietnam while affirming the positive behavior of Eastern European satellites. Despite the …
Lord Baltimore's Charter And The Definition Of The English-Colonial Relationship In The Seventeenth Century, Christopher D. Purnell
Lord Baltimore's Charter And The Definition Of The English-Colonial Relationship In The Seventeenth Century, Christopher D. Purnell
History Theses & Dissertations
In the years 1650 to 1658 the Maryland colony faced severe political instability as a result of the conflict between Proprietor Cecilius Calvert and the Puritan population settled in Ann Arundel County. The roots of the conflict were found in the colony's royal charter, which conferred the Catholic proprietor with extensive powers of government. The Puritan population found this concentration of authority in the hands of a Catholic government intolerable and appealed to the English Commonwealth to void Baltimore's colonial charter. Instead Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell allowed the charter to stand, and in doing so ratified the differences in conditions …

Crossing Borders: Mexican Immigration Into The United States, Ewelina L. Dzieciolowski
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Immigration has been one of the major political and economic topics debated by governments in the world. In the United States, migration legislation is debated in the Senate, and impacts every industry throughout the country. Therefore, with further research in this field more answers for why migration occurs can be found. Although various disciplines focus on this phenomenon, each offers reasons specific to the discipline which is searching for an explanation. This thesis acknowledges that economic factors, social aspects, push and pull influences are some of the reasons for immigration, but it also proposes that there are other forces behind …
"They Are Gone And I Am Going": The Battle Of Memphis 6 June 1862, Matthew T. Eng
"They Are Gone And I Am Going": The Battle Of Memphis 6 June 1862, Matthew T. Eng
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the 6 June 1862 naval battle of Memphis between the Confederate River Defense Fleet and Union Ram Fleet and Western Flotilla. In just under two hours, the crowded and anxious populace lined along the Memphis bluffs witnessed the complete destruction of the last remaining Confederate fleet along the Mississippi River. Within the combined Union army and navy operations throughout the late winter and spring of 1862, the clash of iron-wielded rams and gunboats that occurred on a casually warm June morning tells much of the scope of the western war and its importance in ultimately securing the …
