The Israeli Armored Paradigm In The Yom Kippur War: An Evaluation, Joseph C. Leonhardt Dec 2010

The Israeli Armored Paradigm In The Yom Kippur War: An Evaluation, Joseph C. Leonhardt

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Yom Kippur War of 1973 saw Israel suffer nearly twice the casualties and triple the duration of the previous war. This is in contradiction to the fact that Israel, following its spectacular success in the Six-Day War of 1967, was in a far better position than it had been in 1967. This work will analyze the problem of Armor preeminence in the Israeli Defense Force first to prove the existence of preeminence, then to qualify its effect in the war and then to qualify its importance in the differing factors between the 1967 and 1973 Wars. This will be …

Strengthening Biblical Historicity Vis-À-Vis Minimalism, 1992-2008, Part 1: Introducing A Bibliographic Essay In Five Parts, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Research Publications

This is the first in a series of five articles which cover one aspect of a debate in biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies. In question is the historical reliability of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Historical/biblical minimalism, the side in the debate which finds the Hebrew Bible almost completely unreliable as a source for history, has already received substantial bibliographic treatment. Therefore, this series attempts to provide balance by covering the literature in support of historical reliability.

These articles focus not on modern histories of ancient Israel, but rather, publications related to the historicity of the non-miraculous assertions and …

Trust, Repentance, And Apocalyptic Zionism: Basilea Schlink And The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary Respond To War, George Faithful

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Wars past, present, and future have shaped the development of the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary. Mother Basilea Schlink wrote that her sisterhood was “a child of the last war,” referring to the Second World War. Her vision for her sisterhood was equally shaped by the Cold War and by her expectations of the imminent nuclear world war that would usher in the Apocalypse. To these wars Mother Basilea and her sisterhood responded with a radical trust in God, daily individual and corporate repentance, and unwavering support for God’s Old Testament people, the Jews, and, by extension, the State of Israel. …

On the afternoon of February 23, 1943, amidst the gathering of professors, pastors, and students, the inauguration ceremony of Professor Henry Conrad Wingblade as the second president of Bethel Institute was held at the school's chapel. In his acceptance address entitled, "Bethel and the World of Tomorrow," Wingblade reflected on the Institute's role in a global war that seemed to be spiraling out of control: "Nor should we forget just now that Bethel men and women are sharing in the crucial tasks and burdens which face our country and the world today-increasingly in the places of spiritual power as chaplains, …

Alcuin And Vikings: A Theology Of Carolingian Election, Chastisement, And Exaltation, Taylor Ferda

Library Research Prize Student Works

Throughout the long history of the Church's struggle to take seriously the biblical precepts for peacemaking, the changing context has always brought with it a difficulty in being a witness to peace in a world gripped by violence. The Viking raids of the ninth and tenth centuries are no exception. In this paper, I will attempt to reveal how Alcuin of York, Charlemagne?s finest theologian and clergyman, grapples with this question of violence by looking specifically at the Viking raids of two English monasteries in the last decade of the eighth century. I will show that Alcuin employs an Old …

Prayer As Science In Early America, George Faithful Apr 2010

Prayer As Science In Early America, George Faithful

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Even Jesus might need more than a few days to resurrect Cotton Mather. After three centuries of public malediction for his apparent inconsistencies, moralism, political meddling, and perceived complicity in the Salem Witch Trials, his rehabilitation will be slow in coming if it comes at all. Lovelace’s American Pietism of Cotton Mather could have marked the beginning of a Mather renaissance, but now, thirty years after the fact, Lovelace’s work remains the most recent comprehensive study of Mather’s theology.

Lovelace suggests that Mather’s approach to piety was one of synthesis rather than of incongruity. While Lovelace applies this idea to …
