Reconstruction: A Concise History, Allen C. Guelzo
Reconstruction: A Concise History, Allen C. Guelzo
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Conflict shifted from the battlefield to the Capitol as Congress warred with President Andrew Johnson over just what to do with the South. Johnson's plan of Presidential Reconstruction, which was sympathetic to the former Confederacy and allowed repressive measures such as the "black codes," would ultimately lead to his impeachment and the institution of Radical Reconstruction. While Reconstruction saw the ratification of the 14th and 15th Amendments, expanding the rights and …

There were several techniques that the school used, which had many severe consequences still present in the lives of alumni to this day. This project will be discussing things like punishments, job training, how cultural ties were cut from students and how alcoholism played a role in many …

Finding Aids
This research was undertaken in the mid-1970s by Anthony M. (Tony) Kaliss to provide supporting data for use as a part of the land claims suit by the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes. The suit has long been settled and the tribes were federally recognized. Both tribes had been recognized and dealt with continuously since at least the 1700s first by the Massachusetts colony, then by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a state and then the State of Maine when it separated from Massachusetts in 1820. This research focused entirely on financial relations. The purpose was to establish that there was …
