Big Bone Lick is the birthplace of vertebrate paleontology in the Western Hemisphere and has a long and celebrated history in the exploration of the American colonial frontier and of the early United States. Notable European scientists of the 18th century such as Buffon, Cuvier, and Hunter discussed the fossils found there. Prominent Americans of the time, such as Boone, Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson are also part of the site’s history. It is the type locality for several extinct late Pleistocene megafaunal mammals, most notably the iconic American Mastodon, who were attracted to the area by salt licks dictated by …

The majority of the publications in this record group were created by the University of Maine's Land and Water Resource Center, which is now known as the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions.

The Land and Water Resource Center was established by the Water Resources Research Act of 1964 and was primarily funded by federal funds. The Center served the goals of stimulation and coordination of research, training and educational activities in the water resources disciplines, including soil suitability and land use. The Founding Monsters comic book was created as a science-friendly graphical storytelling framework that tells the story of the Founding Fathers and their obsession with prehistoric megafauna, especially mastodons and giant ground sloths. Founding Monsters combines sequential art (e.g. comic book style) with historical and scientific data. The first mastodon (Mammut americanum) fossils were found in New York in the early 18th century. For almost three quarters of a century, the United States has spent billions of dollars and countless person-hours in the pursuit of a national missile defense system that would protect the country from intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) carrying nuclear warheads. The system currently in place consists of 44 long-range antiballistic missiles stationed in Alaska and California to protect the United States from a possible nuclear weapon carrying ICBM attack from North Korea. After all this effort, this system is still imperfect, being successful only 10 out of 18 tests.

Robert E. Jensen was born in Iowa in 1938. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Denver in 1961 with an M.B.A. in accounting, he received a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1966. He was a Certified Public Accountant and taught at the University of Denver, Stanford University, and Michigan State University. He came to the University of Maine at Orono in 1968 as the Nicolas M. Salgo Professor in the College of Business Administration.

One of the most effective, and most mysterious, tools of modern theoretical physics is a mathematical method including what is here called “field theory.” The success of this procedure in unraveling the “zoology” of fundamental particles and their behavior is a marvel. The philosophical context of this marvel is the source of endless academic controversy. The core of the method is a blend of mathematics and description created by “physicist-philosophers,” from Maxwell and Helmholtz to Einstein and Schrödinger. This book tries to unravel the mystery, or at least chronicle it.

This collection consists of oral history interviews of people who grew up living on the Ogeechee River and its watershed. The interviews were conducted from 2016-2017 for Phase I of the Ogeechee Project, but the topics span a broad range of time - including family lore and artifacts from Native American settlement and the Colonial Period through today. Materials include photographs and written documents with audio recordings making the bulk of the collection. Materials were originally collected by c.a.s.e. Consulting Services for the Ogeechee Riverkeeper organization.

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) introduced digital images as part of its website nearly 10 years ago. The initial collection featured local artists, historical photographs, and newspaper articles. Since 2012, the collection has continued to grow to include nearly a dozen distinct repositories and hundreds of thousands of unique records. Furthermore, CML has created partnerships with local organizations to preserve Columbus’ unique and rich history.

In 2015, CML looks to further scale its digital collections. Through a grant, which provided specialized large format and a book scanner, CML will share historical photos and artifacts, many of which are generously provided by …

Dr. Harold Borns, Professor Emeritus at the University of Maine Climate Change Institute, narrates original footage of Richard E. Byrd's second Antarctic expedition, 1933-1935. The footage was filmed by John L. Herrmann of Paramount Pictures. The original footage presented was transferred from 16mm film in January 2002 by Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport, Maine, and narration by Dr. Harold Borns added in August 2014. The original film footage is held by the Hudson Museum, University of Maine.

The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. Meiosis is the process which forms gametes and spores for reproduction in eukaryotic cells. During the pachytene phase of meiosis I, a protein structure, called the Synaptonemal Complex (SC), forms between homologous chromosomes and creates a scaffold for genetic recombination. In yeast, the Zip1 protein is a major structural component of the SC. At restrictive temperature for meiosis, ZIP1 is required for completion of meiotic divisions. At permissive temperature ZIP1 is required for proper chromosome segregation. We observed that chemical inhibition of the proteasome, with MG132, results in arrest at prophase of meiosis I.
