Japan And Ethiopia: An Appraisal Of Similarities And Divergent Courses, Messay Kebede Dec 1997

Japan And Ethiopia: An Appraisal Of Similarities And Divergent Courses, Messay Kebede

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The idea of a comparison between pre-1935 Ethiopia with Japan before and during the Meiji Restoration arouses contradictory reactions among students of Ethiopia. Some find the idea indefensible, others judge it quite reasonable and instructive. Those who reject the parallel do so by emphasizing the social gap which separated Japan and Ethiopia, while those who welcome the idea base their arguments on historical similarities and on the identity of objectives of their respective modernizing circles. Thus, among the first group, Shiferaw Bekele contests the seriousness of a parallel between Japan and Ethiopia, arguing that the Ethiopian leaders had only a …

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler Jan 1997

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler

Quidditas

When the Chorus in Henry V instructs the audience about what to expect in Act III, it reiterates the point made earlier in the play that the spectator must take an active role in helping the players achieve their goal of presenting an effective drama: "eche out our performance with your mind" (line 35), says the Chorus. This would seem to be a commonplace of theater theory, but unfortunately, recent attempt by some teachers to incorporate televisual performance activities into the Shakespeare classroom have all too often neglected the intellectual participation of students with "performance texts," that is, with printed …

Relativism, Reflective Equilibrium, And Justice, Justin Schwartz Jan 1997

Relativism, Reflective Equilibrium, And Justice, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

THIS PAPER IS THE CO-WINNER OF THE FRED BERGER PRIZE IN PHILOSOPHY OF LAW FOR THE 1999 AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE BEST PUBLISHED PAPER IN THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS.

The conflict between liberal legal theory and critical legal studies (CLS) is often framed as a matter of whether there is a theory of justice that the law should embody which all rational people could or must accept. In a divided society, the CLS critique of this view is overwhelming: there is no such justice that can command universal assent. But the liberal critique of CLS, that it degenerates into …

Dorothy L. Sayers And The Passionate Intellect, Roger Phillips

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

Dorothy L. Sayers wrote, “[W]here the intellect is dominant it becomes the channel of all other feelings. The ‘passionate intellect’ is really passionate. It is the only point at which ecstasy can enter.” While a phrase that is often used by biographers, the actual meaning of ‘passionate intellect’ is up for discussion. In exploring the life of Sayers one can see how she came to use this term and its meaning in the context of her life.

C.S. Lewis: Past Watchful Dragons, Stephanie Jones

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

Through his many stories C.S. Lewis has a unique way in which he engages the reader, first catching them with an idea, then slipping past the “watchful dragons” of our intellect to speak to our deepest parts. These stories are often discussed intellectually, but it is also important to know how these stories impact readers on a personal level.

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway Jan 1997

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway

Quidditas

Although Renaissance philosophers and theologians like Marsilio Ficino strove mightily to show Plato and Plotinus compatible with Saint Paul, writers of popular prose and poetry suffered no such qualms. While it appears curious and often shocking to modern readers to find reference to the apostles and Apollo in successive paragraphs, many Renaissance writer followed Dante's example in The Divine Comedy and saw nothing incongruous in embracing classical mythology while espousing Christian doctrine. A fascinating example of this combination of traditions is the popular French work of a female author of the early Renaissance—Hélisenne de Crenne's Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent …

Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen Jan 1997

Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen

Quidditas

Even without external corroborating evidence, we may infer from her works that the nun Hrotswitha (Hrotsvit in Saxon) lived in Saxony during the second half of the tenth century. Because she seems to have had considerable freedom of movement and expression for a woman at that time, writing about worldly affairs evidently with some personal knowledge of them, she was most likely a canoness, that is, not fully cloistered. She must have visited the courts of the Saxon kings, probably more than once, since she chronicles their exploits and composes poetry of a type briefly popularized by a scholar in …
