Societal Rebirth: The Importance Of Spirituality, Lauren Rothstein

This article offers an exploration of what the social consequences are when modernity strips away religious-human relationships to the land. The two texts Black Elk Speaks and Grapes of Wrath both include moments of anonymous forces imposing systematic modernization on society. Particularly, I try to understand the controversial subject of societal rebirths, traditionally defined through employment and steady food source availability. This paper proposes an approach to societal rebirths that emphasizes the importance of spiritual connection to the land through a critical analysis of Bakhtin's theory of Chronotope and Leopold's theory of Land Ethic. The account books list wages paid for daily work as well as for piece work (handles). Employees were sometimes paid in cash, but most of the wages were paid in flour, mill, or other general store goods. Some of the accounts are for customers, not employees.

Biology and Ecology Faculty Scholarship

Dorothy Jean Jackson FRES FLS (1892-1973) should be familiar to anyone interested in water beetles. She published prolifically on the ecology, distribution, flight capacity, and parasites of water beetles, and made especially important contributions to our knowledge of dytiscids. Here I provide a more extensive bibliography of her work that is almost certainly incomplete, but I think includes most of her scientific output between 1907 and 1973. Her first paper was published when she was 14 years old, and her last was completed by Jack Balfour-Browne and published posthumously.

According to Fordham and Ogbu (1986), the acting White hypothesis stems from White Americans’ refusal to acknowledge Black Americans’ intellect, leading to stereotypes of Black intellectual inferiority. This results in Blacks American youth doubting themselves and their intellectual ability, defining academic success as a White person’s privilege, as well as discouraging their Black peers, whether consciously or unconsciously, from emulating the academic pursuits of White people (Fordham & Ogbu, 1986). With academic success considered a characteristic of Whiteness, many Black American students suppress their academic potential by doing poorly in school, as a means of rejecting accusations of acting …

Telling the Stories of Race and Sports in Canada

In the summer of 1942, hundreds of male Japanese-Canadians from families interned in British Columbia would find themselves employed by the Ontario Farm Service Force on farms throughout southwestern Ontario. These young men would face prejudice and many challenges but also acceptance and friendship. One area that provided an important common interest was baseball and the Japanese-Canadian farm labourers would play highly-attended exhibition games against local teams. This presentation explores the events and process that led to a particularly memorable game at the end of the harvest season.

When Marineland of the Pacific opened in 1954 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in greater Los Angeles, it was the second oceanarium in the world and the first on the West Coast. An initial investment of $3 million by Oceanarium Inc., owners of the popular Marine Studios park located near St. Augustine, Florida, ensured that Marineland was built with the same state of the art facilities needed to produce an authentic representation of the ocean floor on land. This dissertation presents a two-part study of sporting practices of Southern Ontario Black women, between the 1920s and the 1940s, aimed at developing a socio-cultural history of sport that includes narratives from marginalized groups. Given sport’s traditional position as a masculine domain, as well as Canada’s status as a patriarchal White supremacy, the accounts presented in this work centre Black women’s sport experiences through an intersectional perspective. It is argued that, by virtue of their simultaneously racialized and gendered identities, Black women had distinct sporting experiences from those of White women and men and Black men.

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

A developed sense of interdependence with the socio-ecological landscapes of pilgrimage can serve as a path for accepting and reducing the impact we have in our sacred travels. Developing ecological habits of mind allows the pilgrim to draw deeper meanings from and thus greater affinity with the natural world. Raising awareness of environmental issues and appreciating the interaction of humans and the natural world helps modern pilgrims play an important role in conservation and restoration of pilgrimage landscapes.

Context: Flexibility is an important aspect of physical performance and when deficient can result in an increased opportunity for injury. Cupping therapy is an ancient technique that has recently seen a growth in popularity in Western Orthopedic medicine as a soft tissue mobilization technique. Most cupping therapy research explores the use of cupping therapy for treating headache, herpes zoster, asthma, cough, and other non-orthopedic pathologies. Cupping therapy has had positive results on an injured population for increasing flexibility.
