Archeological Test Excavations In Areas To Be Affected By A Proposed French Drain West Of The Granary, Mission San Jose State Site (41bx3), Bexar County, Texas, John W. Clark Jr., Elton R. Prewitt

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Limited archeological test excavations were conducted along the west wall of the granary at Mission San Jose State Historic Site (41BX3) in Bex~r County, Texas, during July and August, 1979. The investigations were designed to provide information regarding the presence or absence of significant archeological materials in areas to be affected by the construction of a proposed French drain intended to relieve moisture-related structural problems along the west wall of the granary. six 0.5 by 1 meter test pits were excavated; 1,303 artifacts and 1,809 bone and shell fragments were recovered. During late January and early February 1978, archaeological testing was carried out in an area north of Olmos Dam, San Antonio, Texas (see Fig. 1) by personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio. This work was performed under contract between CAR and the San Antonio River Authority.

During the last weeks of December 1976, an archaeological and historical survey was conducted within the boundaries of Brackenridge Park, San Antonio, Texas, to inventory and assess all identifiable prehistoric and historic remains. Since December 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research has carried out a succession of archaeological surveys of proposed sewer line routes and sewage treatment plant construction in the San Antonio area (Fox 1977; Fox, McGraw and Valdez 1978). The data recovered, archaeological sites recorded and recommendations for future work have been provided to Radian Corporation for use in preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement.

The engineers have published the 201 Wastewater Facility Plan (Pape-Dawson et. al. 1978). It is now appropriate to examine this plan in relation to the archaeological work already completed, in order to assess what must yet …

From July 6 to 31, 1977, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), conducted archaeological investigations at Fort McIntosh (41 WB 11), Laredo, Texas. The purpose of this investigation was to make an assessment of areas to be affected by planned tennis courts and parking facilities on the Laredo Junior College campus.

During January 1979, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out archaeological surveys along five different drainages in two sewage treatment plant areas of northern Bexar County. The current project is an addition to the begun by Fox (1977) in Phase I to assess archaeological resources for preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement for the San Antonio 201 Wastewater Treatment Facilities Project.

During late February and early March 1979, an archaeological and historical survey for the Jacobs, Tom Retzloff and Smith-Striddle properties in Gonzalez, Atascosa and Live Oak Counties was conducted. These properties are leased by the Continental Oil Company.
