Digital Germany: Virtual Archives, Powerful Portals, Wise Wikis, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
Presented in the Winter 2006-2007 issue of the Global Resources Newsletter, the German-North American Resources Partnership issue. Online portals and digital gateways into focused subject and area studies are both boons and blessings. For German Studies but even more extensively, for all disciplines relevant to the German-North American Resources Partnership this past year has seen explosive growth in the preparation, expansion, proofing, and proclamation of virtual libraries, scholarly digital projects, and multidisciplinary portals. German digital scholarship has reached a maturity that calls for the types of systematic registry and centralized access that are vital to researchers from Aachen to Zzyzx.
The Long March Of The German 68ers: Their Protest, Their Exhibition, And Their Administration., Gracie M. Morton
The Long March Of The German 68ers: Their Protest, Their Exhibition, And Their Administration., Gracie M. Morton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The postwar children coming of age in the late 1960s in West Germany mounted a widesweeping socio-political protest against what they saw as the strangling silence of their parents, the Nazi generation. These protesters, referred to as the 68ers for their pivotal year, continued their struggle in following decades, incorporating an important and controversial exhibition, and finally culminating in their own administration thirty years from their defining moment. Using such diverse kinds of information as parliamentary debates, interviews, and contemporary criticism, this thesis explores the impact of the 68ers' initial protest and the influence they ultimately had on their nation …
From Pork To Kapores: Transformations In Religious Practice Among The Jews Of Late Imperial Kiev, Natan Meir
From Pork To Kapores: Transformations In Religious Practice Among The Jews Of Late Imperial Kiev, Natan Meir
Judaic Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Until recently, studies of Jewish religious practices in Imperial Russia have focused on major movements such as Hasidism and mitnagdism as well as the challenges that Haskalah presented to traditional Judaism. Few scholars have scrutinized transformations in everyday religious practices such as the observance of Sabbath and other holidays, synagogue attendance, and liturgical practices. However, new political, social, and economic realities had generated subtle changes in religious practices even in earlier periods and it comes as no surprise, therefore, that religious practices among Jews during the tsarist period, especially in Kiev, were neither monolithic nor static. This article provides a …

The Wehrmarcht: Soldiers And Germans During The Second World War, Neil Varble
The Wehrmarcht: Soldiers And Germans During The Second World War, Neil Varble
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The German Army, also known as the Wehrmacht, fought a brutal war on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. These soldiers, under the command of military officials of the Nazi state, vowed to destroy Bolshevism and Jewish populations. By examining letters from soldiers to family members on the German home front as well as letters from families to the men on the front lines, a better understanding of the motivations of war is revealed. Letters of these men and family members present insight into a vast area of research in German twentieth century history. An estimated 20 to …
The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348–1349, Albert Winkler
The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348–1349, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
When the Black Death approached the Swiss states in 1348, the news of the approaching pestilence traveled faster than the Plague. This gave the Swiss time to react and try to prevent its arrival. The Swiss did not know what caused the Black Death, but they feared that the Jews were poisoning water wells in order to cause the plague. At Chillon and elsewhere, Jews were tortured for confessions, which were clearly worthless. In a climate of fear and severe prejudice, Jews were killed in numerous communities including Basel, Bern, Zurich, and Kyburg by being burned to death. Execution by …

The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348-1349, Albert Winkler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
When the Black Death first arrived in Europe in 1347, it struck along the Mediterranean coast of Italy and southern France. In the following year, the plague swept into central Europe following major trade routes deep into the interior of the continent. The pestilence was one of the most virulent diseases ever to strike the human community, and its impact was devastating, because perhaps a third of the population of Europe died in the next several years. People were dying at an unprecedented rate, and no one knew precisely what the contagion was or how to stop it. 1 A …
The Impact Of Swiss Exile On An East German Critical Marxist, Axel Fair-Schulz
The Impact Of Swiss Exile On An East German Critical Marxist, Axel Fair-Schulz
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Among many East German Marxists, who had embraced Marxism in the 1930s and opted to live in East Germany after World War II (between the 1950s until the end of the GDR in 1989), was a commitment to the Communist party that was informed by a more nuanced and sophisticated Marxism than what most party bureaucrats were exposed to.

Book Review: Churches And The Holocaust: Unholy Teaching, Good Samaritans, And Reconciliation, Joy Laudie
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Yad Vashem was created in 1953 by the Israeli parliament as a memorial to the Holocaust. Since its inception over 21,000 non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Nazis have been singled out as "Righteous Among the Nations." Mordecai Paldiel has been the director of the Department for the Righteous at Yad Vashem for the past twenty-five years. His position has allowed him to monitor the investigations of cases in which men and women are nominated for recognition in saving Jewish lives. The work has opened his eyes to a new aspect of human behavior; caring for …

Book Review:The Swiss And The Nazis: How The Alpine Republic Survived In The Shadow Of The Third Reich, Louis B. Kuppenheimer
Swiss American Historical Society Review
For hundreds of years Switzerland has been recognized as a nation committed to not being involved in military conflicts. However, in WWII it was confronted by the most serious and credible threat to its neutrality since the inception of the policy. To begin with, Switzerland's wartime population of 4,200,000 was outnumbered nearly eighteen to one by its most lethal contiguous neighbor, Germany. When Austria and Italy were thrown in, the ratio jumped to thirty to one. In addition, the Axis powers of Italy and Germany shared over seventy percent of Switzerland's border. And although her industrial production was of the …
The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin
The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Before traveling to Ireland, I watched the film Michael Collins; aside from the single paragraph of text allocated to the 1916 Easter Rising in The Course of Irish History, the film shaped my understanding of the Irish fight for independence. As the semester progressed, this basic understanding evolved into a solid grasp of Irish history and politics. As a student of history with a specific interest in historiography, I aimed to structure my Independent Research Project (ISP) around Irish history so that I could delve deeper into my preferred field. Throughout the semester my intrigue piqued as I noticed how …

Material Possessions And Religious Boundaries In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter
Material Possessions And Religious Boundaries In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The 1719 trial of two Jews from Brest (Brześć) accused of breaking into a Bernardine church and robbing a tomb of a prominent noble woman, raises questions of material possessions and religious boundaries. Among things stolen were clothes and textiles used in wrapping the coffin of the deceased woman. They were also one of the reasons that the robbery was discovered and the Jews were caught: some months following the robbery the daughters of the two Jewish robbers were spotted wearing dresses made of the stolen textiles. This case is certainly most notorious but it is not the only example …
Symbolic Clothes Marginality And Otherness Of Jews And New Christians As Reflected By Their Dress In Two Christian Texts, Nadia Zeldes
Symbolic Clothes Marginality And Otherness Of Jews And New Christians As Reflected By Their Dress In Two Christian Texts, Nadia Zeldes
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
Clothes in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period denoted legal status and social standing. Jews (and other minority and marginal groups) were distinguished by clothing regulations, sometimes supplemented by the wearing of a special badge. However, beyond custom and law, there were subtle cues that signaled marginality such as the wearing of certain fabrics and colours etc. In Mediterranean Europe, that is in Italy, Sicily and the Iberian kingdoms, Jews wore more or less the same fashions as the surrounding society though there were restrictions and distinguishing marks imposed by either the ruler and the Church or the …
The Estates Of A Jewish Merchant And Of A Rabbi In Seventeenth Century Venice, Bernard D. Cooperman, Benjamin Ravid
The Estates Of A Jewish Merchant And Of A Rabbi In Seventeenth Century Venice, Bernard D. Cooperman, Benjamin Ravid
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
As is well known, the Archivio di Stato di Venezia (ASV; Venetian State Archives) is among the largest in Europe, and contains much material dealing with the Jews of Venice. This includes inventories of the estates of Jews compiled for the purposes of implementing the will of the deceased, and very fortunately two inventories of the estates of arguably the two most prominent Jews of the first half of the sixteenth century, representing two completely different types of Jews, both of whom have been the subject of considerable scholarly attention, have been located and published in the original Italian. One …

An Inventory Of An Inquisitorial Prisoner's Possessions, Miriam Bodian
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The presentation will describe how an inventory of an inquisitorial prisoner's possessions, routinely drawn up at the time of a prisoner's arrest, throws light on the material circumstances and consumption patterns of the prisoner and his/her family, as well as on the material milieu he/she inhabited. The inventory is that of Francisco Maldonado de Silva, a physician in the Viceroyalty of Peru, drawn up at the time of his arrest for judaizing in 1627.
This presentation is for the following text(s):

The Possessions Of Two Italian Jews At The End Of The 16th Century, Flora Cassen
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The brothers Lazaro and Angelo Nantua were moneylenders in Gavi, a town under Genoese dominion, during the second half of the sixteenth century. In 1592, Angelo got into a violent argument with the chancellor of the town. This incident started a series of legal proceedings against the brothers that went on for years. The two documents I choose are (1) an inventory of all their posessions made in 1592 by order of the doge in Genoa (2)a letter written by the local podesta in which he complaints that they do not wear the yellow hat and gives a detailed description …
Jewish Display Silver After The Age Of Exploration, Vivian Mann
Jewish Display Silver After The Age Of Exploration, Vivian Mann
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
Although there is literature on the impact of the discovery of the Americas on the European silver supply and the production works in silver, no one has examined its impact on the commissioning of silver by hevrot, particularly the Hevrah Kaddisha, both for their own use and as donations to the synagogue. This paper will examine in what ways Jewish patronage was similar to those of guilds and Christian confraternities and it what ways they differed.
This presentation is for the following object(s):

The Phoenix, The Exodus And The Temple, Limor Mintz-Manor
The Phoenix, The Exodus And The Temple, Limor Mintz-Manor
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
This presentation investigates the symbols of the Sephardic congregation in Amsterdam, mainly the Phoenix and the Pelican that symbolize the resurrection of Jesus in catholic Christianity, alongside the unique exegesis by several congregants of the Exodus narrative. The analysis of the symbols, images and the architecture of the congregation's synagogue, shows that they had played a major role in the construction of the "new" identity of the congregation. By utilizing them the congregation established the "resurrection" narrative of the Sephardic Jewry and its new beginning in Amsterdam. The rich cultural background of these symbols and images, both in the Iberian …
The Image Of The Jewish Wedding In The Works Of Eighteenth Century German Hebraists, Shalom Sabar
The Image Of The Jewish Wedding In The Works Of Eighteenth Century German Hebraists, Shalom Sabar
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
A relatively considerable number of images pertaining to the Jewish wedding survived from medieval to early modern Germany. These are to be found in Hebrew illuminated manuscripts, illustrated books of customs (Minhagim-Bücher), decorated Torah binders (Wimpeln), and selected wedding artifacts. However, the most captivating and curious visual evidence on the various stages and customs of the Jewish wedding in Germany is not found in Jewish sources but in the work of eighteenth century Christian Hebraists. Despite the clear anti-Semitic overtones in their work, the images inserted in their books provide rare and significant insights into Jewish practices, folk beliefs and …
Law In Times Of War: The Case Of Chechnya, Federico Sperotto
Law In Times Of War: The Case Of Chechnya, Federico Sperotto
Human Rights & Human Welfare
In October 1999 “the second Chechen war” broke out. In December the Russian federal army started an operation to take control of Grozny. During the confrontation between the Federal forces and the Chechen separatists, serious human rights violations occurred. Several cases concerning violations of fundamental rights, in and around the city, have been brought before the European Court of Human Rights against Russia. The lawsuits concerned in particular physical integrity issues. This study provides some insights on the jurisprudence of the European Court on Human Rights in order to ascertain the adequacy of the mechanism of protection provided by the …
Jewish Consumption And Material Culture In The Early Modern Period, Emw 2007
Jewish Consumption And Material Culture In The Early Modern Period, Emw 2007
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
At the 2007 Early Modern Workshop, speakers discussed the representation of Jews and their way of life in art and the use of various types of images and objects by scholars trying to learn about Jewish rituals, customs, and culture: images from Christian sources (Shalom Sabar), beakers (Vivian Mann), cloth and textiles used to make parokhet (Rachel Greenblatt). Can symbols used in synagogues and books tell us much about the values of the Jewish community? What role did ideology play in public representations of the Jewish community (Limor Mintz-Manor)? Scholars discussed the usefulness and pitfalls of using inventory records, focusing …

Stalin, Jews, And The Nationalities Question, Kazimir B. Gazdzik
Stalin, Jews, And The Nationalities Question, Kazimir B. Gazdzik
Culminating Projects in History
The intellectual foundation of Soviet society, written by Marx and Engels, did not articulate how a society was to move from a non-socialist society to a socialist one, when there are many ethnic groups represented in the country. As a result, early Soviet leaders needed to answer the question of how to deal with the various ethnic groups in the country, especially after the oppressive rule of the Tsars. Two interpretations of what was to be done, in regards to the nationalities question, were presented by Lenin and later Stalin. Lenin offered a broad, representative or national view while Stalin …
