A Summary Of Replies To The Questionnaire On The Future Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Alice H. Finckh Feb 1979

A Summary Of Replies To The Questionnaire On The Future Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Alice H. Finckh

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the early summer of 1978 Marianne Burkhard, of the University of Illinois, circulated a questionnaire among the members of the Swiss American Historical Society designed to probe their opinions regarding the future course of the Society. The varied responses she received run the gamut of strong support for new directions to emphatic warnings against becoming involved in expensive programs or diluting the purpose and goals of the Society. Dr. Burkhard asked me to try to summarize the responses. The first part of this report summarizes and tabulates, so far as possible; the second part condenses individual comments written on …

This issue of the SAHA news letter is late due to the fact that it was more difficult than usual to get the materials together. We still plan to publish three letters in 1977 as we have become accustomed during the past five years.

It is my sad duty to inform the members of the Swiss American Historical Society of the recent death of Emil J. Schaefer. Emil Schaefer was born on May 10, 1892, in Zurich and came to this country in his late teens. After some traveling he settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked in several capacities, founded a family and became one of t he active members of a number of Swiss organizations.

With this number the Swiss American Historical Society begins the second decade of issuing a regular newsletter. Like most of its predecessors it contains a mixture of materials that should lie of interest to our members. Special attention shoultl be given to the report about the eleventh annual meeting, presented by Dr. Leo Schelbert, formerly Secretary, now President, of our society. Most of the space of this number is given to an article by Dr. Delbert Graetz on the Bernese Anabaptists which Dr. Graetz prcsentetl at the annual meeting. A couple of shorter contributions round out our offerings.

The present newsletter contains four items which, hopefully, will be of interest to SAHS members. Professor Heinz K. Meier presents the fourth part of his history of the Swiss American Historical Society. He shoes with much tact and lucidity how the organization almost vanished in the late 1950's and how its revival occurred largely due o the efforts of Dr. Lukas F. Burckhardt, then Cultural Counselor of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington.

In April we received the sad news of the death of Mario Muschi. The editor of the San Francisco-based Swiss Journal, Mr. Muschi had been a member of our society for many years and had served on our Board of Advisors. His obituary by his son Achille Muschi, reprinted in the Amerikanische Schweizer Zeitung of April 18, 1973, states that Mario Muschi was born in Tesserete (Ticino) in 1893 and came to this country in 1915. He spent his life in working for his beloved Swiss Journal with which he s erved the many Swiss on the West Coast. The …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

It is a great pleasure to present in this newsletter Part Two of Professor Heinz K. Meier's absorbing sketch of the history of the Swiss American Historical Society. He shows ppw many minds tried their best in making the organization relevant, and their efforts remain an inspiration to those engaged in carrying on what they had so enthusiastically begun. Success based on competence and unity of purpose does not come easily as Professor Meier's story clearly shows, but the perspective of time reveals past crises as seemingly unavoidable growth pains and selfless respect for the work of others as perhaps …

The participants very much wished that more of you could have been there to help in the decision-making process and to enjoy the gracious and cultured hospitality extended to the SAHS by Dr. and Mrs. Hans Muller.

Report Of The President Of The Swiss American Historical Society For 1969, Dr. Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The year of 1969 was an outwardly quiet one as far as SAHS matters were concerned. I knew when I was reelected to the presidency of the society at the last annual meeting in New York a year ago that its affairs had been well handled and that everything was in good order. This excellent state of affairs was the result of the work of a fine board of officers who performed their duties with care and dispatch. I was lucky to inherit a state of reliable men from m predecessor, Dr. Augustin Maissen. Everyone of them, Dr. Leo Schelbert, …
