Comparing Hitler And Stalin: Certain Cultural Considerations, Phillip W. Weiss
Comparing Hitler And Stalin: Certain Cultural Considerations, Phillip W. Weiss
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
There is a great temptation to compare the Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. This is true for two reasons: first, the careers of both men converged at the same point in history, thus doubling the impact both made and second, because the names Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin have become metaphors for ideologies and crimes that today are reviled. The question then arises: who was worse, Hitler or Stalin? This project shows that there is no viable, credible, definitive, or final answer to this question, and that prevailing attitudes about Hitler and Stalin have become so ingrained in contemporary society …

Taking a cue from two books—Stephen Bittner’s account of the “many lives” of the Soviet Thaw and Greg Castillo’s study of the Cold War as a series of battles in design and the domestic sphere—as well as a recent explosion of interest among historians in the Khrushchev era, “spatial history,” material culture, and East–West exchanges, this article addresses the paradoxes of the Thaw as exemplified in urban form. This article discusses the Tirana Party Conference of April 1956, treating the Albanian Party of Labor (the Communist party) as an “information society.” The article …

As World War I came to an end, the borders in Central and Eastern Europe were tenuous, and in some cases non-existent, and several countries came into territorial conflict. The battle between Poland and the Soviet Union was a pivotal event in twentieth century history, as Poland not only dealt the Red Army its first defeat, but also greatly expanded the territory of the fledgling Polish Republic to its historic, pre-partition borders.
