Faq#7: Why Were Chinese People So Angry About The Attempts To Seize The Torch In The International Torch Relay?, Susan Brownell

Susan Brownell

I have just returned from five days in the earthquake disaster zone in Sichuan province, where I was a member of the “People’s Olympic Education Promotion Team” that visited Deyang city to conduct “Youth Olympic Games Re-enactments” at six local primary and secondary schools. There I realized that for the people we encountered, The Torch is a sacred object. I call it The Torch because that is what they called it – 火炬 – as if there were only one, and no further adjectives were necessary.

The project expressed the mission of Donnie Pei, a professor at the Capital Institute …

Diary Of Joe And Josephine Nomad Assignment, Kitty Lam Mar 2017

Diary Of Joe And Josephine Nomad Assignment, Kitty Lam

Kitty Lam

The Eurasian nomads did not leave behind an abundance of written sources. Because these were primarily non-literate societies, many of the written sources on these people were created by people from settled civilizations. If the nomads could tell us about their encounters with the settled civilizations, how would they tell that story? What evidence would they leave behind? This assessment encourages students to showcase their creativity while demonstrating their understanding of the relationship between nomadic and sedentary civilizations in Eurasia.

The Tear That Does Not Mend: A Review Of 'Freedom, Trauma, Continuities: Northern India And Independence', Haimanti Roy Oct 2015

The Tear That Does Not Mend: A Review Of 'Freedom, Trauma, Continuities: Northern India And Independence', Haimanti Roy

Haimanti Roy

Academic attention on Indian Independence and Partition has hitherto been focused mainly on the political and the "sheer teleology to the climax in August 1947 when British power was formally transferred." Freedom, Trauma, Continuities: Northern India and Independence, in the view of its editors as well as its contributors, is an attempt to examine other developments, no less momentous, during this period. The book, which is a collection of 12 essays by different authors dealing with various aspects of the Partition of 1947, attempts, as the title suggests, to document the "trauma" and find the "continuities" following "freedom."

Revisiting A Struggle: Port Kembla, 1938, Rowan Cahill Mar 2015

Revisiting A Struggle: Port Kembla, 1938, Rowan Cahill

Rowan Cahill

A review and discussion of the 2015 documentary film 'Pig Iron Bob' (Producer/Director Sandra Pires). The focus of this film is the dramatic 2-month long boycott by Australian waterside workers in Port Kembla (NSW), 1938/39, of a cargo of Australian pig-iron bound for Japan. The workers took their action in protest against Japanese militarism and the Sino-Japanese War. The boycott enraged the conservative Australian government of the day which pulled out all stops to maintain its policy of appeasement towards Japan.

Sean J. Mclaughlin And Jie Gao Bangqiu Mlb’S Role In Baseball’S Comeback In The People’S Republic.Pdf, Sean Mclaughlin

Sean McLaughlin

This article explores the growth of Chinese baseball since the early 1970s. The sport was very popular in the 1940s and 1950s as the semi-official pastime of the People’s Liberation Army, but it disappeared from the country in the 1960s due to economic woes stemming from the Great Leap Forward and the anti-western fervour of the
Cultural Revolution. Richard Nixon’s historic meeting with Chairman Mao in 1972 ushered in a thaw in Sino–American relations that enabled veterans of 1950s competitions to take up baseball once again and teach the game to a new generation. Over the 1970s, baseball began to …

Mahatma Gandhi’S Unique Contribution To Humanity, Mohan Limaye Apr 2014

Mahatma Gandhi’S Unique Contribution To Humanity, Mohan Limaye

Mohan Limaye

What makes Mahatma Gandhi a person of perennial influence? We know that he was a non-violent fighter for justice and freedom and was instrumental in achieving political independence for India from Britain, and that he inspired several subsequent non-violent movements all over the world. What is less known is that he asserted the primacy of ethics over expediency. This lecture considers this and other aspects of his remarkable life which make Gandhi as relevant today as he was a hundred years ago and as he may be a hundred years from now.

New Age, Old Discourse: National Geographic, Orientialism, And Coverage Of Afghanistan In The 21st Century, Brandon Hensley Jan 2014

New Age, Old Discourse: National Geographic, Orientialism, And Coverage Of Afghanistan In The 21st Century, Brandon Hensley

Brandon O. Hensley

This paper explores National Geographic magazine's coverage of Afghanistan in 2002. In total, 7 of the 12 issues from 2002 have articles about Afghanistan regarding the war, continuous hardship and unrest, and an Afghan woman refugee with green eyes who was on the cover in 1985 and disappeared until 2002. Through a critical examination of these articles as textual representations of the Orient, I intend to draw upon Said's framework of Orientalism to explore how the discourse in National Geographic coverage of Afghanistan is embedded in a hegemonic reproduction of the indigenous other and the West's "benevolent" role in stabilizing …

Mou Zongsan And His Nineteen Lectures On Chinese Philosophy, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2013

Mou Zongsan And His Nineteen Lectures On Chinese Philosophy, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Mou Zongsan (1909-95) was a philosophical giant whose legacy looms large over Chinese-speaking regions of the world, and who is in the process of being discovered by non- Sinophone thinkers. Faced with many challenges to earlier Chinese self-understandings, Mou and his contemporaries undertook sustained, critical engagement with philosophical thought from outside their native traditions. In the twenty-first century, philosophers in the Western world are slowly beginning to follow suit. Some are motivated by worries about the narrowness or unsustainability of present Western trends; others are prompted by worries about the rise of China; and some are simply attracted to the …

The Politics Media Equation:Exposing Two Faces Of Old Nexus Through Study Of General Elections,Wikileaks And Radia Tapes, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The important identity of a responsible media is playing an unbiased role in reporting a matter without giving unnecessary hype to attract the attention of the gullible public with the object of making money and money only. After reporting properly the media can educate the public to form their own opinion in the matters of public interest. Throughout the centuries, the world has never existed without information and communication, hence the inexhaustible essence of mass media. The government has the power to either make or reject whatever that will exist within its environment. It also determines how free the mass media …

Myanmar In The Global Political Economy: Development Models, The West And China, Jonathan H. Ping Aug 2013

Myanmar In The Global Political Economy: Development Models, The West And China, Jonathan H. Ping

Jonathan H. Ping

The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a crucial Southeast Asian / South Asian state that has significant opportunities to develop rapidly. However, the character of the twenty-first century global political economy is interdependent, globalising and yet also mercantilist. These attributes make the developmental task exceedingly complex. How can Myanmar develop whilst maintaining a unique and valuable identity within a globalising system; gain appropriate developmental rewards from interdependence and against the desires of mercantilist states; and distribute development internally to enable a modern political economy? In order to address these questions this seminar considers the region historically, development as …

A Study Of Japanese Animation, Michele Gibney Nov 2012

A Study Of Japanese Animation, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

This paper takes a sociological approach to the question of popular culture’s ability in Japan--specifically that of Japanese animation--to be reflective of the country's sociological concerns. This is not to say that all anime shows consciously reflect Japanese life, but by extrapolation of recurrent themes one can construct a model of certain sociological issues in Japan. The author split the paper up into five sections each of which tackles a different theme. These sections are: Education, Social and Class Differences, Environment, Post-Nuclear Visions, and An Emergent Feminism. The main point that the author conveys in each section is a way …

White Snake, Black Snake Folk Narrative Meets Master Narrative In Qing Dynasty Sichuanese Cross-Stitch Medallions, Cory Willmott Oct 2012

White Snake, Black Snake Folk Narrative Meets Master Narrative In Qing Dynasty Sichuanese Cross-Stitch Medallions, Cory Willmott

Cory A. Willmott

The cross-stitch medallion in figure 1 was collected by my grandmother, Katherine Willmott, in the early 1920s when she was a missionary in Renshow, Sichuan Province, West China. Many years after I inherited it, I learned that it depicts a folk narrative called “White Snake; Black Snake” that was traditionally performed both on stage in the legitimate theaters and in Chinese shadow puppet dramas (Highbaugh n/d:6).

The story may be summarized as follows: There were two female snakes, White Snake and Black Snake, who were inseparable friends. They both changed into beautiful young women. White Snake got married and bore …

Tense Relations: The Tradition Of Hoshi And Emergence Of Borantia In Japan, Nichole Georgeou Jun 2012

Tense Relations: The Tradition Of Hoshi And Emergence Of Borantia In Japan, Nichole Georgeou

Nichole Georgeou

In this thesis I examine the transformations of volunteering in Japan from 'hōshi' (mutual obligation) to 'borantia' (borrowed from the English 'volunteer'). I argue changes in the forms of volunteering overtime point to important shifts in state-citizen and state-civil society relations in Japan. Hōshi emerged during a period of Japan's history when the state had an increasingly authoritarian approach to managing its subjects. It reflects this cultural context as it embodies a strong sense of obligation and is characterised by notions of service and sacrifice, particularly dedicated service to the greater good of the Emperor and state. In contrast the …

Creating Groups Outside The Caste System: The Devadasis And Hijras Of India, Erica Caren Belkin Feb 2012

Creating Groups Outside The Caste System: The Devadasis And Hijras Of India, Erica Caren Belkin

Erica Belkin

Although ordinarily India?s caste system does not allow members of different castes to join together and form other sanctioned social groups, two exceptions do exist. The devadasi priestesses who used to serve in India?s temples and the hijras, hermaphroditic, intersexed, impotent, and/or homosexual male transvestites who were often castrated, both drew/draw members from a variety of castes into cohesive units. This thesis explores the similarities between the devadasis? and the hijras? history and religious roles that led to their unique societal statuses, in order to find patterns that elucidate those aspects of Indian society beyond the scope of caste.
