The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

For the past thirty-seven volumes, The Thetean has showcased the work of history students at Brigham Young University. The selection process is difficult: often staff members disagree and engage in spirited debates as they defend or critique various submissions. There are many moments when it seems the group will never reach consensus. With this in mind, I am always surprised to see the polished and pristine finished product. The completed journal betrays no hint of the discord that created it.

One year ago, Cameron Nielsen approched me at the History Department Banquet with an interesting inquiry. We had seldom crossed paths, so his question surprised me: was I interested in replacing him as the Thetean's editor in chief? Flattered, but preoccupied with an upcoming presentation in Philadelphia and a summer internship in the English Lakes, I agreed to consider his offer with little ambition to follow through. The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Last year Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history students, awarded the Best Chapter Award in our division to the Beta Iota Chapter at Brigham Young University. Such a distinction is a tribute to the active participation of the chapter's members and to the quality of students and professors in the History Department at BYU. The Thetean, the official journal of the Beta Iota Chapter, showcases the scholarly research of some of these students.
