Allegro documents a vivid example of the manner in which a project to define oneself in opposition to the Other inevitably generates antagonism. But a thorough understanding of the genesis of anti-Semitism requires more than mapping the tensions that arise between co-existing communities. It must also explain the fear we find associated with anti-Semitism, and how these emotional presumptions are communicated to populations that have little direct contact with members of the Jewish faith. Allegro does not take us as far as this, and thus the account is unfinished. He has perhaps brought us as far as documentary texts will …

Wilhelm Kroll's Preface To Justinian's Novels: An English Translation, Timothy G. Kearley, David J.D. Miller
Wilhelm Kroll's Preface To Justinian's Novels: An English Translation, Timothy G. Kearley, David J.D. Miller
Timothy G. Kearley
Justice Frederick H. Blume, attorney and long-time Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court, single-handedly translated Justinian's Code and Novels in the early twentieth century. His is the only English translation of the Code to have been made from the Latin version accepted as most authoritative. Using Blume's papers, this article describes, among other things: how Blume created the extensive Roman law library needed for his translation; his approach to translation; and his collaboration with Clyde Pharr on Pharr's "Corpus Juris Romani" series. The article also describes the author's editing and digitization of Justice Blume's translation.

Concepts Of Intellectual Property In The Roman Tradition, Erin Guldiken, Marianina Demetri Olcott
Concepts Of Intellectual Property In The Roman Tradition, Erin Guldiken, Marianina Demetri Olcott
Dr. Marianina Olcott and Erin Guldiken
The current study concerns concepts of intellectual property in the Roman tradition first century BCE through forth century CE. It complements a previous study published in the Journal of the Copyright Society of the USA (Summer 2002, vol.49, No.4) which dealt with ancient Athenian concepts of intellectual property. The current study as in the earlier study of the Athenian tradition shows that ancient concepts of intellectual property are remarkably similar to modern concepts, as embodied in American case law (Title 17) and guidelines on plagiarism formulated by the modern academic establishment. Our plan of investigation is as follows: First we …

Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser
pablo rosser
Yolanda Carrion & Pablo Rosser Six wells at Tossal de les Basses in Spain captured a large assemblage of Iberian woodworking debris. The authors’ analysis distinguishes a wide variety of boxes, handles, staves, pegs and joinery made in different and appropriate types of wood, some – like cypress – imported from some distance away. We have here a glimpse of a sophisticated and little known industry of the fourth century BC.

In The Reign Of Queen Victoria: Fourteen Texts On Cyprus, 1878-91, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
This volume includes fourteen long neglected texts on the history, anthropology, politics and society of Cyprus during the first decades of the British rule. The volume is informed by a lengthy introduction by K. Demetriou, who examines the contribution of the British to modernizing the island, by introducing political reforms and improving the island’s economy and infrastructure. It also explores and analyses their perceptions of the indigenous population within the context of imperialist culture and racialist prejudices. Thus apart from being primary sources that belong to the a certain literary genre, this collection has sociological, historical and topographical interest, especially …
The Three-Figured Reliefs: Copies Or Neoattic Creations?, Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.
The Three-Figured Reliefs: Copies Or Neoattic Creations?, Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.
Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.
The well-known group of four three-figured reliefs, existing in several copies and once assigned to the Altar of Pity in Athens, has always eluded interpretation as a coherent iconographical program. The four scenes depicted are Orpheus and Eurydice, Herakles in the garden of the Hesperides, Herakles with Perithoos and Theseus, and Medea with the Peliads. Though some have questioned the association of the reliefs with the Altar, the conventional dating has not been challenged, in spite of the growing recognition that some of the pieces (most notably the Orpheus relief) are largely unparalleled in the Classical Greek idiom. Careful reexamination …
