A Virtuous Woman, Who Can Find?, Ashley Banker
A Virtuous Woman, Who Can Find?, Ashley Banker
Senior Honors Theses
The contemporary theatre world lacks prominent, virtuous female roles, which are needed to inspire both the actors who play them and the audience members who witness them to emulate their virtuous characteristics. Virtuous characters encourage society to strive for excellence, as well as provide excellent role models for the next generation of young women. From a Christian perspective, a virtuous female role strives to exemplify the traits in Proverbs 31: trustworthy, kind, industrious, selfless, strong, honorable, and God-fearing. The critically-acclaimed plays The Humans and Good People feature prominent female characters who do not exhibit these virtues. Although each play contains …
Counseling Women In Prison On Forgiveness, Guilt, And Shame, Lashawnda Denise Key
Counseling Women In Prison On Forgiveness, Guilt, And Shame, Lashawnda Denise Key
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There is a lack of adequate counseling on forgiveness, guilt, and shame in the women’s prison. Without effective counseling on those subjects while incarcerated, there is potential for the female offender to reoffend. Adequate counseling could increase the recidivism rate. Counselors in the prison system address behavior issues, acclimation of prison life and rehabilitation programs. Addressing the issues that precipitates criminal behavior and helping the offender understand the factors that lead them to engage in criminal behavior are overly complex. With passable counseling the offenders have the propensity to release the hurt and pain they have lived with and become …

Bearing Report: A Roundtable On Historians And American Veterans, James Marten
Bearing Report: A Roundtable On Historians And American Veterans, James Marten
History Faculty Research and Publications
Five historians—each an expert on a specific era and issue related to veterans—were asked to ponder the following questions: 1. What are the most important questions explored by historians in veterans studies? 2. What are the books that have been most useful to your particular area of interest in veterans studies? 3. How can the history of veterans help us understand larger cultural, social, and economic issues during the time periods in which the veterans you study lived? 4. What are the particular contributions that a historic sensibility can bring to the study of veterans of any war? 5. How …
Atlantic Legacies: Free Women Of Color And The Changing Notions Of Womanhood In The Long Nineteenth Century, Marie Stephanie Chancy
Atlantic Legacies: Free Women Of Color And The Changing Notions Of Womanhood In The Long Nineteenth Century, Marie Stephanie Chancy
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on three free-born African-descended women who defied expectations and prejudices to live previously unthinkable lives in the nineteenth century. The project uses their biographies to illustrate how, as black and mixed-ancestry émigrés from the Americas living in Europe, they adopted and adapted the evolving notions of ideal womanhood. As a result they expanded who could be identified as a true, redemptive or new woman. The project shows how they used the tenets of these ideals to live life on their terms. The dissertation is set in an era dominated by white males, and defined by the enslavement …
Torches Of Freedom And Gender Inequality, Amna Baghli
Torches Of Freedom And Gender Inequality, Amna Baghli
Undergraduate Research Symposium
This research paper focuses on how women are being controlled by society pressures and expectations from men, and how the phrase “torches of freedom,” was challenging gender inequality. I have found while doing this research paper how the phrase torches of freedom was influenced from the roots of gender inequality. The first part of the research paper discusses how the history of the smoking campaigns were made in order for women to smoke publicly without fear from judgment. This demonstrates the necessary historical background of the smoking campaign that was designed. Also, how the smoking campaigns were planned out in …

Although the existence of Quakers in Virginia is well known, the best recent surveys of Virginia history devote only passing attention to them, mostly in the context of expanding religious freedoms during the revolutionary era. Few discuss the Quakers themselves or the nature of Quaker settlements although notably, Warren Hofstra, Larry Gragg, and others have studied aspects of the Backcountry Quaker experience. Recent Quaker historiography has reinterpreted the origins of the Quaker faith and the role of key individuals in the movement, including the roles of Quaker women. Numerous studies address Quaker women collectively. Few, however, examine individual families or …
The Virago Paradigm Of Female Sanctity: Constructing The Masculine Woman In Medieval Christianity, Angela Bolen
The Virago Paradigm Of Female Sanctity: Constructing The Masculine Woman In Medieval Christianity, Angela Bolen
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Latin word virago, in its simplest definition, means “a man-like, warrior woman.” For Christian men and women in the Patristic era and the central Middle Ages, the virago represented a woman who denied all biological characteristics of her womanhood, fiercely protected her virginity, and fully embodied the virtues of Christian masculinity. The virago paradigm of female sanctity, a creation of male writers, reconciled a pervasive fear of the female sex with an obvious admiration for holy women. Additionally, the virago model maintained the supremacy of masculine virtues, upheld a patriarchal hierarchy, and created a metaphorical space that validated …
A Trinitarian Pattern Applied To Church Leadership Roles, Michael Don Rouleau
A Trinitarian Pattern Applied To Church Leadership Roles, Michael Don Rouleau
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There is considerable debate in our society today, articles are written, and books are authored, all on the subject of a woman's role in ministry. With this topic being approached from multiple angles, the most straightforward approach is often ignored, overlooked, or marginalized. It will be argued that the Bible, interpreted according to the grammatical, historical method of interpretation using normal grammatical word usage, does not allow a woman to be appointed to or to occupy the role/office of an elder/pastor. In this paper, an examination of the Trinitarian model will be explored in terms of its roles and the …
Unsung And Unheard: An Analysis Of The History And Impact Of Female American Vocal Composers, Shannon Marie Myers
Unsung And Unheard: An Analysis Of The History And Impact Of Female American Vocal Composers, Shannon Marie Myers
Masters Theses
American female composers create music that is pedagogically valuable and should be included in the repertoire commonly used by undergraduate vocal students. The purpose of this research is to provide awareness of the existence and the contribution that American female composers have made to standard vocal repertoire and their pedagogical value. The essential question answered as part of this research is: how have the American women composers contributed to the development of standard vocal literature? Additional sub-questions addressed in this research include: 1) What historical factors (culturally, economically, etc.) have influenced the rise of female composers in America beginning in …
Evaluating Microfinance And The Potential To Economically Empower Women In The Sacred Valley Of Peru, Allison Mcnamara
Evaluating Microfinance And The Potential To Economically Empower Women In The Sacred Valley Of Peru, Allison Mcnamara
CISLA Senior Integrative Projects
In the past 30 years, microfinance loans have become a highly popular strategy to reduce poverty and economically empower people in developing countries. Women in particular have become the primary recipients of microfinance loans. However, recent studies show that the loans only have short-term benefits, and ultimately contribute to the indebtedness of the Global South. This paper studies the effectiveness of microfinance loans in the Sacred Valley of Peru (Cusco), and their ability, or lack thereof, to economically empower women in this region.
Women In Livy And Tacitus, Stephen Alexander Prevoznik
Women In Livy And Tacitus, Stephen Alexander Prevoznik
Honors Bachelor of Arts
Although often neglected in Roman literature, women play important roles where they do appear. This is especially true in Livy's history called the Ab Urbe Condita or "From the Founding of the City" and Tacitus' work the Annals. For reasons I will clarify more in my presentation, Livy uses women as examples. Some are examples that the readers should follow. Lavinia, Lucretia, and the Sabine women all exemplify something good. Lavinia is noble in her aim, Lucretia is a model for chastity, and the Sabine women show the value of harmony. Livy also presents women who are bad examples. …

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
There has been extensive discussion about gender gaps in representation and career advancement in the sciences. However, psychological science itself has yet to be the focus of discussion or systematic review, despite our field’s investment in questions of equity, status, well-being, gender bias, and gender disparities. In the present article, we consider 10 topics relevant for women’s career advancement in psychological science. We focus on issues that have been the subject of empirical study, discuss relevant evidence within and outside of psychological science, and draw on established psychological theory and social-science research to begin to chart a path forward. We …

The Real 1920s: How The Immigration Act Of 1924 Empowered And Encouraged Organized Nationalism, Amanda Pawling
History Presentations
The 1920s were a key era for women and women’s rights. It was also a key era for immigration reform and antiimmigrant sentiment. My research is asking if and how there is a correlation between these different takes on one decade. What my research has shown is that while women were fighting for equality and their right to vote, many were also fighting for traditional family values, family roles, conservatism, and nativism. When it comes to the KKK and its rhetoric of America first and anti-immigration, women were not only in the background but front and center in the fight. …

Fight Like A Girl: Diversity In The Womens Rights Movement, Rachel Boch
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This presentation will focus on the music video "Fight Like a Girl" by Zolita. Written the day after Donald Trump became president of the United States, this song discusses how necessary it is for the women in our country to stand up for our own rights. The music video features a variety of women, from businesswomen to pole dancers, from Muslim women to transgender women. In this presentation I will discuss how the music video for "Fight Like a Girl" emphasizes the fact that all women are equally deserving of rights and respect, and we all must stand together if …
"Blessed Be The Fruit"- Female Representation In The Handmaids Tale Season 1, Joanna Glenn
"Blessed Be The Fruit"- Female Representation In The Handmaids Tale Season 1, Joanna Glenn
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The show The Handmaid's Tale on the television network Hulu, created by Bruce Miller, depicts the struggle of a woman named June who is serving as a handmaid to a powerful commander and his wife to bear their child. This society is a futuristic version in which fertility and birth rates have plummeted. They have an extreme, twisted version of gender norms. A woman's only purpose is to bear children. Fertile women are forced to carry children for powerful couples, their only worth is being fertile. In this project I will present how the show, specifically focusing on the first …
Black Femininity And Masculinity And Its Relation To Sexuality In Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It", Rebecca Chung
Black Femininity And Masculinity And Its Relation To Sexuality In Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It", Rebecca Chung
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Spike Lee's 1986 American Film "She's Gotta Have It" challenges the stereotypical portrayal of Black feminity and masculinity by portraying a wide variety of expressions in sexuality. My approach will be to look at how race and sexuality impact the characters in the movie and Lee comments on the actual world today. The intersectionality of race and sexuality is highly prevalent in the movie and will be explored in my research. My thesis is Spike Lee uses the intersectionality of race and sexuality to critic the stereotypical roles of femininity and masculinity.

Intersectionality In Hidden Figures, Aasiya Slaughter
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This poster focuses on the intersectionality in the movie Hidden Figures. The main identities that are the focal point of the movie are race and gender. Being a black woman in the 1960's was not an easy feat, however Katherine Johnson and her companions overcame the many struggles of such, while also being the minority not only in society but also working in the STEM field. Ireland et al. says that the bodies of education research focused on the experiences of Black students and female students in STEM fields often render Black women and girls "hidden figures" in that they …
"Faggot": Gods Own Country - Directed By Francis Lee, Leah Richardson
"Faggot": Gods Own Country - Directed By Francis Lee, Leah Richardson
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
God's Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, stars Josh O' Connor as Johnny Saxby, a gay Yorkshire farmer, and Alec Secăreanu as Gheorghe Ionescu, a Romanian migrant. The film immediately establishes Saxby as frustrated with the incredible responsibilities of the farm now on his shoulders because of his father's sudden medical issues. The story follows Johnny’s journey, supported by Gheorghe, who teaches him acceptance, tenderness, and vulnerability. This presentation will evaluate the physicality of the characters, as well as different settings and props, as their relationship develops. Examining the intersectional identities within this film will compel the audience to question …

Women’S Advocate Or Racist Hypocrite: Gertrud Scholtz-Klink And The Contradictions Of Women In Nazi Ideology, Mary C. S. Frasier
Student Publications
The Reichsfrauenführerin, Gertrud Scholtz-Klink, led the National Socialist Women’s League from 1934 until she went into hiding in 1945. During her career in the Nazi Party, she created a female focused sector of the party that promoted pronatalist propaganda, discouraged women from engaging in politics, and urged women to only perform gender-suitable work. In contradiction to her message, Scholtz-Klink was the highest-ranking female political figure and a divorcee, who regularly chose her political career with the Nazi Party over her duties in the private sphere. Although she had little to no political power in the inner circle because of her …

A Changing Narrative For Englishwomen's Authorship During The Early Modern Period, Erin Kruger
A Changing Narrative For Englishwomen's Authorship During The Early Modern Period, Erin Kruger
Honors Theses
This thesis is a look into women’s authorship in the English Early Modern period, specifically looking at the time period from 1543 until 1621. The main writers of focus are Catherine Parr, Mary Sidney, Lady Mary Wroth, and Aemilia Lanyer, with supplemental texts from the period used to frame the thesis argument. Modern research on this era is also used to supplement the work. Over the course of the period, the innovation of women’s authorship led to two primary changes in the nature of women’s authorship: more inclusive women’s authorship and the expansion of topics that women wrote on. These …

From Women’S Learning (Fuxue) To Gender Studies: Feminist Challenges To Modern Confucianism, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The promotion of Confucianism to offer solutions to contemporary problems, better alternatives to the patently unsatisfactory status quo of our world and the tired ideals that have dominated academic and global discourses, should not be mistaken for naïve traditionalism advocating the revival of Confucianism as it was understood and practiced in its historical milieu. This is especially pertinent in the area of gender relations. Chenyang Li pointed out nearly two decades ago: as “the philosophical-religious tradition that originated in Confucius and was further developed by scholars and supporters of later times … there is little doubt that the answer to …

Where She Came From And How She Leads: A Study Of The Patterns Among Women Leaders’ Experiences, Emma Goldberg
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
This original research utilizes purposive and snowball sampling methods and semi-structured interviews to answer the question, what common experiences do women leaders have? As well as, how do women leaders view, define, and practice leadership? Through 20 interviews and a multi-part analysis, the research found commonalities in the broader themes of upbringing, family and friends, marriage and motherhood, education, influencers, and leadership viewpoints. The study emphasized diversity in profession, race, marital status, whether they were mothers or not, sexual orientation, and locality. This research uses women leaders’ narratives to quantitatively and qualitatively build new data in a lacking area: female …

Understanding And Equipping Female Leadership At Prosperous Temple Church Of God In Christ, Jonathan R. Hackett
Understanding And Equipping Female Leadership At Prosperous Temple Church Of God In Christ, Jonathan R. Hackett
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Debates on whether women qualify to take up church leadership have persisted over the years. In 2016, there was an instance in Alabama where a woman was appointed as the assistant pastor of a church. Within three months of her service, the number of congregants dropped. Efforts by the church management to unravel the cause of the decline revealed that a majority of the people, particularly women, who canceled their church attendance were uncomfortable with women taking up leadership positions. The case informed this research, which will use the case study of Prosperous Temple Church of God in Christ. The …
Southern African Women’S Struggle To Both Uphold Tradition And Promote Women’S Equality In The Family, Sophia Bierly
Southern African Women’S Struggle To Both Uphold Tradition And Promote Women’S Equality In The Family, Sophia Bierly
Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards
A woman in modern Limpopo, South Africa explained traditional marital expectations by re-telling what her aunt once said to her: “Lady, you must know that this man is your head, you are the neck. Whatever he is telling you, or whatever he is saying, that’s the word, he’s the head, you don’t have to challenge him”.1 This quote shows that unequal familial structures pervade Southern Africa. The traditional structure of marriage in Southern Africa empowers mothers while disparaging wives, consequently minimizing young women’s economic opportunities, while preserving older women’s economic security. Traditional Southern African marital customs have significant influence over …
