Over the course of three decades, white southern Methodist women took on issues of labor and poverty through their national women’s organization, the Woman’s Missionary Council (WMC). Between 1909 and 1939, the WMC focused their work on five groups of people they viewed as in need of their help: women, children, black southerners, immigrants, and rural people. Motivated by the Social Gospel and an intense belief that their faith led them to effect real change in the American South, the WMC intervened in people’s lives, pursuing reform that could at times be maternalistic and condescending but at other times radical …

This master’s thesis means to contribute to scholarship on the nature of lived Catharism in later medieval Languedoc. The study uses depositions from the inquisition registers of Jacques Fournier and Geoffroy d’Ablis, as well as Bernard Gui’s Liber sententiarum (book of sentences) to examine and compare how men, women, and families who were friends, relatives, accomplices, believers, and defenders of Cathar perfecti (the Cathar spiritual elite) participated in and supported the sect during the “Authié revival” from 1300 to 1308 by means of a case study on the Benet family from Montaillou and Ax.

This dissertation analyzes the complexity of popular religious trends under a nominally secular government through the examination of prophecy during the French July Monarchy period (1830-1848). Throughout this era, several diverse individuals claimed to be the recipients of supernatural visions and visitations. These “prophets” attracted interest, and genuine belief, from a wide range of contemporaries. Studying the supernatural visionaries of this period, and those drawn to such phenomena, illustrates the nature of contemporary interests and values. Why were supernatural visitations so successful and appealing at this specific time? Attraction to these visionaries reveals political and social anxieties and upheavals that …
