“Good Enough”: Teaching Confidence Through Revision, Mckayla Freeman Dec 2018

“Good Enough”: Teaching Confidence Through Revision, Mckayla Freeman

Tutor's Column

This paper explores the relationship between a student’s writing and their response to criticism. Many students respond negatively to revision suggestions when they have already finished their paper. However, revision is a vital part of all writings and must be included in the writing process. Criticizing a student’s essay can often cause the student to feel personally insulted. In order for them to revisit and edit something they’ve written, tutors must encourage them and remind them of the things they did well before pointing out mistakes. This will cause the student to remain self-affirmed, confident, and ready to change their …

“Does That Make Sense?” The Importance Of Clear Assignment Instructions And Rubrics, Carly Schaelling Dec 2018

“Does That Make Sense?” The Importance Of Clear Assignment Instructions And Rubrics, Carly Schaelling

Writing Center Analysis Papers

Students often struggle to understand the expectations of their teachers when completing writing assignments. Teachers often feel frustrated when students seem to understand what they are asking, only to grade papers and see that the gap between their assignment tasks and students’ performance is larger than expected. As a Writing Center tutor and first year graduate instructor for English 1010, I have had experiences that have helped me appreciate the importance of having clear written assignment instructions as well as detailed rubrics. Having these two elements incorporated with assignments can help students focus more on their writing tasks and less …

The Myth Of “Righteous Anger” What The Bible Says About Human Anger, Jeffrey Gibbs Nov 2018

The Myth Of “Righteous Anger” What The Bible Says About Human Anger, Jeffrey Gibbs

Concordia Pages

It is hard not to draw the conclusion that we live in a society that is characterized by constant anger and outrage. While it may not be unique to our current age, what is new is the way in which social media has provided a megaphone for expressing our anger, often to shame others into thinking and acting in ways we find acceptable. Of course, Christians are not immune either to feelings of anger (in so far as we are shaped by original sin) or the use of social media to express our outrage (in so far as we are …

Motherhood And Teaching: Radical Care, Ksenija Simic-Muller

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This essay is a personal reflection on how I leverage my positioning as a caregiver in my roles of a mathematician, teacher, and mother, to advance a vision for a more just and equitable society. I argue that care at home and in the classroom takes similar forms, and can be liberating instead of oppressive.

Role-Play In The Chinese Classroom, Matthew Werth Jul 2018

Role-Play In The Chinese Classroom, Matthew Werth

Masters Theses

Over the past decade, there has been an increasing push for foreign language teachers to use a communicative approach to language instruction. One area this can be seen is through role-plays, activities where students take on a persona other than themselves to complete a task in the target language. Despite the growing popularity of role-play, there has been little empirical research looking at the impact of role-play on students. In particular, the differences between large group and small group role-plays remain virtually unstudied.

This thesis looks at role-play in Chinese language classrooms from the perspectives of both teachers and students. …

Close Reading And Critical Theory, Kimberly Rosewall May 2018

Close Reading And Critical Theory, Kimberly Rosewall

All NMU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

CLOSE READING AND CRITICAL THEORY

By

Kimberly L. Rosewall

Close reading is the very foundation of literary studies, yet this interpretive practice can be very difficult, especially for undergraduate students. The purpose of this study was to explore my own action research and examine the ways in which the teaching of critical theory affected both my teaching of close reading practices, and my students’ ability to conduct close readings of selected passages of texts in a general education English classroom. I also examined how the teaching of critical theory enriched my students’ understanding of the world, their lives, and …

Using Women’S Voices In Teaching History And Doctrine, Jennifer Reeder Apr 2018

Using Women’S Voices In Teaching History And Doctrine, Jennifer Reeder

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

In early July 1830, shortly following her baptism, Emma Smith received a revelation through her husband, Joseph Smith, about her position and responsibilities in the new Church of Christ. In the revelation (now known as section 25 of the Doctrine and Covenants), the Lord described Emma as an “elect lady” and charged her to “expound scriptures and exhort the church according as it shall be given thee by my spirit.” The responsibilities were weighty: the 1828 American Webster dictionary defines exhort as “to encourage, to embolden, to cheer, to advise, to excite or to give strength, spirit, or courage.” Likewise, …

Teaching Preschool Music: A Praxial And Biblical Approach, Ashley Finke Apr 2018

Teaching Preschool Music: A Praxial And Biblical Approach, Ashley Finke

Masters Theses

The research conducted in this study strove to identify the effects of a praxial music approach with the integration of biblical principles on teacher training and preschool students’ learning. Currently, universities do not offer music education students instruction in preschool music pedagogy that incorporates a praxial music approach with biblical principles. Several sources were consulted to discover the need for a college level curriculum geared towards teaching a praxially and biblically-based music curriculum in preschool. As a method to discover how beneficial it is to incorporate praxial music teaching with a biblical foundation, this study establishes a framework and curriculum …

Research Before Teaching And Service? Performances, Perceptions, And Experiences Of Faculty At Teaching-Intensive Institutions, Megan Elizabeth Throm Jan 2018

Research Before Teaching And Service? Performances, Perceptions, And Experiences Of Faculty At Teaching-Intensive Institutions, Megan Elizabeth Throm

Wayne State University Dissertations

The privileging of research over teaching is well documented in scholarship regarding the teaching-research nexus. In this dissertation I analyze the experiences and identities related to research, teaching, and service of sixteen faculty members at teaching-intensive institutions through intensive interviews. The focus on teaching-intensive institutions is driven by two goals. The first goal was to gain a better understanding of how the privileging of research over teaching and service is experienced, understood, and reified by faculty members at teaching-intensive institutions. Second, by giving voice to the experiences of those at teaching-intensive institutions I hope to increase the value placed on …

Using Twitter As A Pedagogical Resource To Teach First-Year Composition, Carol Reynolds-Srot Jan 2018

Using Twitter As A Pedagogical Resource To Teach First-Year Composition, Carol Reynolds-Srot

Department of Writing and Communication Theses

This study examines the incorporation of Twitter in a first-year composition classroom, and addresses the following question: “How can using Twitter as a pedagogical resource to teach writing benefit both students and professors?” The study employs mixed-methods, including surveys, textual analysis of student tweets, and an interview with the professor to assess the application and outcomes of using Twitter. The research finds that although students use social media for a significant amount of time daily, bringing it into the classroom does not automatically lead to better engagement or improved writing. However, students in this study did demonstrate a differentiated used …

Constraints Preventing Chinese Efl Teachers From Putting Their Stated Beliefs Into Teaching Practice, Lei-Min Shi, Janine Delahunty, Xiaoping Gao Jan 2018

Constraints Preventing Chinese Efl Teachers From Putting Their Stated Beliefs Into Teaching Practice, Lei-Min Shi, Janine Delahunty, Xiaoping Gao

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

In China, developing students' overall communicative competence was set as the central goal of the current college English curriculum requirements since 2004. However, this goal has remained largely unfulfilled, particularly with regard to writing competence. This study proposes that the genrebased pedagogy in systemic functional linguistics may be the key to achieve this national curriculum goal. After teachers were trained in this pedagogy, through designed workshops for teacher development, this research examined possible changes in teachers' stated beliefs about effective writing pedagogy and actual teaching practices. The findings from classroom observations and teachers' self-reports suggest that even though all teacher …

From There, To Here, Now Where? My Journey Of Vulnerability Toward Interdisciplinary Teaching, Jennifer Lyn Way Jan 2018

From There, To Here, Now Where? My Journey Of Vulnerability Toward Interdisciplinary Teaching, Jennifer Lyn Way

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Few words have the power to make people both cringe in fear and lean forward, fascinated to know more. This thesis focuses on one such word: vulnerability. Through the Scholarly Personal Narrative writing format, I explore what vulnerability means to me and how my understanding has changed. I examine how vulnerability in my life helped refine me into a wiser, more compassionate, teacher.

Teaching requires vulnerability, a willingness to risk failure and accept mistakes for what they really are: lessons to create a connection among other humans. This thesis portrays how I have come to understand and accept vulnerability as …
