Peer Editing In Composition For Multilingual Writers At The College Level, Benjamin J. Bertrand
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"The goal of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a guided peer editing activity for multilingual college freshman. This was an example of action research that began winter quarter 2013. The study used an activity where peer writers and responders identified and corrected errors in essays. Writers then choose which suggestions were errors to change and which did not need change. The study took place at Eastern Washington University in an English 112 class. English 112 is English for Academic Purposes (EAP) which is an English composition class. It took a total of four class periods in …
"The Worry That You Are Yourself": Darl's Unforgivable Neurodiversity In As I Lay Dying, Neal Hallgarth
"The Worry That You Are Yourself": Darl's Unforgivable Neurodiversity In As I Lay Dying, Neal Hallgarth
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This paper is concerned with the character of Darl Bundren and the repeated motif of madness in William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. Possible psychiatric explanations for Darl's madness, including linguistic evidence for his psychotic breakdown, are explored. The paper does not agree with the critical use of words such as "insane" or "crazy" as the book itself questions the verity of such labels. Critical analyses concerning Darl tend to be sympathetic but use derogatory language when defending the character. Articles related to the relatively new idea of neurodiversity will counter the backhanded sympathy with which the critics regard Darl. …
Developing A Pedagogy Of Pluralistic Linguistic Expression In The First Year Composition Classroom, April Dawn Ridgeway
Developing A Pedagogy Of Pluralistic Linguistic Expression In The First Year Composition Classroom, April Dawn Ridgeway
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Over the past 40 years, the field of composition has recognized of the importance of legitimizing students' linguistic diversity in the composition classroom. However, a framework for a pedagogy of linguistic diversity does not yet exist. This thesis seeks to provide such a framework by identifying a new genre of academic writing entitled Pluralistic Linguistic Expression (PLE). First, this thesis begins with the research question, how do educators respect students' linguistic diversity in writing while still teaching them rhetorically appropriate discourse? A review of the historical approaches to PLE and the current pedagogical research provides a framework for further discussion. …

Teaching English In The Philippines: A Diary Study Of A Novice Esl Teacher, Jeffrey Lee Svoboda
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"In this diary study, the writer explores the similarities and differences between teaching English at the college level in the Philippines and the United States while completing internships in the summers of 2011 and 2012. His students were in their first or second year of university classes and were working towards a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, or an AB in English. As part of the critical ethnography, the diarist considers cultural influences that affect the language learning. He includes three lessons he designed and taught as well as his impressions of …

"Rosa Alchemica," "The Tables Of The Law," And "Adoration Of The Magi," Edited And With An Introduction, Brady J. Peneton
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This volume contains an introduction to William Butler Yeats' early occult short stories "Rosa Alchemica," "The Tables of the Law," and "The Adoration of the Magi." Panned by critics over the last century, the three stories contained in this volume are both controversial and difficult. The introduction explains the language of occultists and alchemists in terms of Jungian psychology and describes how alchemical doctrine influenced Yeats' writing and the largely alchemical mythology contained in A Vision. Yeats' desire for apocalypse is identified as a desire for the general population to see the divine through symbol and to discover the psychological …
The Ogbanje In Little Bee By Chris Cleave, Courtney A. Harler
The Ogbanje In Little Bee By Chris Cleave, Courtney A. Harler
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"In Chris Cleave's 2008 novel Little Bee, he offers readers a literary representation of the Nigerian spirit-child for the purpose of political and post-colonial examination. Cleave's intentions are revealed through a full study of this traditional Nigerian concept. The Nigerian spirit-child, known as the ogbanje in the lgbo language and the abiku in the Yoruba language of Western Nigeria, is imprisoned in an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The concept of the ogbanje-abiku is indeed related to the overall concept of reincarnation, but it differs in the sense that the child who is unduly linked to the spirit …

To Labor As An Indian Travels: What The Spokan Indians Taught The Eells And Walkers, Early Missionaries On The Columbia Plateau, Pippin J. Rubin
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Between 1838 and 1848, two New England families interacted and lived among a small band of Spokan Indians. During their time together, both groups learned much from each other. The story of how the Eells and Walkers related to the Spokan is different from other missionary tales. Their peaceful existence and daily cultural exchanges shines a gentler light on this era of transition on the Columbia Plateau. Their story should not distract from what occurred elsewhere in the Oregon Country during the 1830s and 1840s, but its telling gives a fuller and thus a more accurate picture of what took …

Coming Home: Storytelling, Place, And Identity In N. Scott Momaday's House Made Of Down And Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, Azalyn Croft
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"This analysis will examine authenticity through the conflated elements of identity, home, ceremony, and storytelling in Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony and N. Scott Momaday's House Made of Dawn. Coming home for characters Tayo and Abel involves redirecting of isolated individual energy to the whole community, enabling them to return to their estranged homes. Traumatic experiences in the war have alienated these men to the point where they can no longer claim place, identity or self. The author analyzes the ways in which these men have become "un-homed" as well as the various forces that "home" them. This thesis, on a …
