Talk To Me, I Am Listening, Larbi Sami Ben Dec 2009

Talk To Me, I Am Listening, Larbi Sami Ben

Theses and Dissertations

An introductory conversation with a new person I just met usually goes like this: So, where is your accent from ? Are you American? Well, yes, .....but no. Not really. I do have American citizenship and I lived in the US for fifteen years but I grew up in France. Ok, so you’re French? Well, yes, but .....not totally. My mother is French but my father is Tunisian. Ok, so you’re Tunisian? Well, yes, but... not wholly. I don’t speak Arabic, so I don’t totally feel Tunisian. So what are you? American? French? Tunisian? With my work, I ask the …

Khwaam Jam : Memory, Keith Lee Crane Dec 2009

Khwaam Jam : Memory, Keith Lee Crane

Art and Design Theses

Khwaam Jam is an introspective installation of works that explore the perceptions of identity based on memory. Created through the exploration of my past and present, the works of Khwaam Jam utilize the principles and techniques of textile design and production while involving mixed media and new materials in a site-specific installation. This installation is intended to represent my memory on a large scale. The hanging pieces are the focal point of the exhibition and are the physical manifestation of my perception of the categorization and storage of my memories. Memories are the vessels through which we create our identity. …

L’Écriture De La Perte Chez Assia Djebar, Lila Kermas Dec 2009

L’Écriture De La Perte Chez Assia Djebar, Lila Kermas

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This study proposes a reflexion on the feeling of “loss” as a source of literary creation. The different tensions generated by an hybrid identity of a character in a quest, especially in La disparition de la langue française (“disappearance of the French language”) by Assia Djebar ; what matters here is to see how the feeling of crisis and the split reveals itself and how it dissolves in and through (the process of) writing.

Showcase (Concerns Of The Southern Man: From Gatlinburg To Kaohsiung City), Samuel Davis Dec 2009

Showcase (Concerns Of The Southern Man: From Gatlinburg To Kaohsiung City), Samuel Davis

All Theses

ABSTRACT
One's daily life consists of collecting objects, images, ideas, fears and dreams. These items and concepts do not conjure themselves, but are selected like so many berries in a basket. I question what objects people choose to showcase in their homes, their trophies and shrines. These types of objects serve to validate their owner's beliefs and through their collection, elevate that person's status. In what items does one subconsciously invest their identity?
My work speaks to the value of the collected once transformed. In my practice I juxtapose ideals held separately and simultaneously about the value and import of …

Lantern's Diary, Wei Zhong Tan Nov 2009

Lantern's Diary, Wei Zhong Tan

Theses and Dissertations

My MFA project titled, “Lantern's Diary” is a synergy of colors, tactile experiences, and reflections on change. The artwork is based on cultural influences. The physical form of the lantern is a metaphor of culture identity—in Eastern culture, paper has been used in architecture, furniture, clothing, funerals, writing materials, and lanterns. Its function as a material is to fulfill the necessity of daily life and ceremonial rituals. Hence, paper plays an important role in the Eastern society. The color spectrum representing “Change” corresponds with the western system of color organization. The gallery space plays a spatial aesthetic role in …

Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph Nov 2009

Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph

Masters Theses

Charles Dickens' Great Expectations (1861) stands apart from his other works as a powerful expression of his later social and theological views. Rife with rich characterizations, fairy-tale elements, grotesque and bizarre plot twists, Victorian social issues, and a beautifully thoughtful and imaginative commentary on the universal human themes of loss, guilt, abuse, identity, money, social status, and love, this novel remains an outstanding example of truly great art, both popular and classic. This story of identity formation in a nineteenth-century English context demonstrates how Dickens' life and writings, influenced by spurious and inconsistent theological beliefs, express the idea that sin …

Explosive Devices And Rhetorical Strategies: Appreciation For Steven R. Harmon’S Towards Baptist Catholicity, Richard Crane Oct 2009

Explosive Devices And Rhetorical Strategies: Appreciation For Steven R. Harmon’S Towards Baptist Catholicity, Richard Crane

Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship

The first edition of Karl Barth’s Römerbrief was described as a bombshell on the theologian’s playground. In similar fashion, Steven R. Harmon’s Towards Baptist Catholicity issues a radical challenge to dominant interpretations of Baptist identity in North America.1 To borrow a bumper-sticker cliché, Harmon is seeking to subvert the dominant paradigm. Harmon calls Baptists to retrieve “the ancient catholic tradition that forms Christian identity through liturgical rehearsal, catechetical instruction, and embodied ecclesial practice,” leading to a renewed awareness that Baptists belong to “the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church” (xix, 18). Harmon’s theological project, following classical Faith and Order ecumenism, …

Mal-Adjusted: Integration Of Selves In Joss Whedon's Firefly, Rose Buscemi Oct 2009

Mal-Adjusted: Integration Of Selves In Joss Whedon's Firefly, Rose Buscemi

Honors College Theses

Joss Whedon’s Firefly and Serenity offer a brand new take on the well established science fiction film genre, one that many authors and viewers believe needed Whedon’s fresh new ideas to prevent further stagnating of the genre. Whedon’s Firefly focuses on the lives of Malcolm Reynolds (Mal) and his crew aboard the Firefly-class space ship named Serenity. Mal is the most compelling of the characters on the show because he is, in a way, the most fragile one. In the series premiere, “Serenity,” Mal is a complete man, fighting as a volunteer in a civil war. After his army …

"Applying Carl Schmitt To Global Puzzles: Identity, Conflict And The Friend/Enemy Antithesis,", Emma R. Norman Aug 2009

"Applying Carl Schmitt To Global Puzzles: Identity, Conflict And The Friend/Enemy Antithesis,", Emma R. Norman

Emma R. Norman

This paper demonstrates the broad appeal and usefulness of the political and legal thought of Carl Schmitt to scholars of international relations by applying his seminal friend-enemy antithesis to current global problems as well as to current IR theories used to negotiate them. I argue that Schmitt’s contemporary appeal lies, first, in his insistence that collective identity is necessarily formed through conflict (enmity); and second, that identity lies at the very base of what motivates behavior on the international stage (at the sub-national, national and transnational levels). By implication, Schmitt’s theories offer some fresh insights into the sources and nature …

A Sense Of Place: A Personal Exploration, Analysis And Re-Interpretation Of Diverse Places, Hyejin Park Aug 2009

A Sense Of Place: A Personal Exploration, Analysis And Re-Interpretation Of Diverse Places, Hyejin Park

Theses and Dissertations

Every city/place has unique, distinctive qualities. Individuals acquire a sense of place in accordance with their own experiences and perspectives, which may not be the same as the experiences and viewpoints of another person. In this project, I explore, analyze, and re-interpret three places that have creatively and emotionally influenced me and remained in my memory: Times Square, New York City; Insadong, Seoul, South Korea; and Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia. To comprehend and draw a sense of place, I observe, feel, and document the characteristics of each place through different methods and processes, based on my own experiences. In addition, …

Taking Eudora Welty's Text Out Of The Closet: Delta Wedding's George Fairchild And The Queering Of Saint George, James R. Wallace Jul 2009

Taking Eudora Welty's Text Out Of The Closet: Delta Wedding's George Fairchild And The Queering Of Saint George, James R. Wallace

English Theses

Eudora Welty’s characterization of George Fairchild (Delta Wedding) queers the heroic masculine ideal, St George, whose legendary exploits have been popularized in narrative literature, Catholic iconography, and children’s fairy tale. Lauded by the Fairchild women for his “difference,” George’s sexuality offers him an identity apart from the suffocating Fairchild family myth. George Fairchild’s queer sexuality and homoeroticism augments our critical understanding of Delta Wedding, the character, as well as other characters. The author’s subtly politicized construction of the novel’s ostensible hero subverts literary tradition, the gender binary, and patriarchal myth.

Puppets, Pioneers, And Sport: The Onstage And Offstage Performance Of Khmer Identity, Marel Angela Stock Jun 2009

Puppets, Pioneers, And Sport: The Onstage And Offstage Performance Of Khmer Identity, Marel Angela Stock

Theses and Dissertations

Most tourists visiting Cambodia only seek to visit the World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. The Cambodian, or Khmer people are capitalizing on this booming tourist industry, but they are also disseminating a more complex Khmer identity through other sites and festivals. This identity simultaneously hearkens back to the affluence of the Angkor Period in Khmer history and looks forward to the modernization of the country. After the reign of the Khmer Rouge, from 1975-1979, which led to what is now called the Cambodian Killing Fields, the Khmer people needed to create a new, hopeful, peaceful identity for their nation. …

The Basque Country: The Heart Of Spain, A Part Of Spain, Or Somewhere Else Altogether, Paddy Woodworth Jun 2009

The Basque Country: The Heart Of Spain, A Part Of Spain, Or Somewhere Else Altogether, Paddy Woodworth

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The Basque Country exhibits contradictory symptoms of good health and chronic internal rupture. A flexible and robust economy and a vibrant cultural life are undermined by opposed senses of identity, which make almost any statement about the region deeply contentious. The verifiability—or otherwise—of Basque nationalist and Spanish nationalist readings of Basque history and culture matter less today than the fact that they are held with genuine conviction by big sectors of Basque society. Both traditions have their own legitimacy, but neither has been capable of fully acknowledging or including the other. Paradoxically, Francoism reinforced Basque nationalist identity, and anxieties about …

Francophone Caribbean literature has consistently challenged stereotypes and clichés usually associated to these islands by strongly opposing the colonial representation of the first writers, especially those of the “doudouisme”. However, the current sexualisation of contemporary literature might lead to think that it has also reignited former exotic colonial representations like those of the Caribbean woman as an object of pleasure, or the unfaithful polygamist Caribbean man. Recent publications from Maryse Condé, Ernest Pépin or René Depestre indicate that, on the contrary, these authors go beyond these colonial representations to undertake a redefinition of cultural identity.

Choice And Discovery: An Analysis Of Women And Culture In Flora Nwapa's Fiction, Mary D. Mears Jun 2009

Choice And Discovery: An Analysis Of Women And Culture In Flora Nwapa's Fiction, Mary D. Mears

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation is in the tradition of redressing the critical imbalance that has undervalued or neglected African women writers by considering Flora Nwapa's three best-known novels, analyzing from a feminist and dialogic perspective what choice and discovery mean for Nwapa's female characters in Efuru (1966), Idu (1970), and One is Enough (1981). Flora Nwapa writes about women and their lives, issues, and concerns within a traditional Igbo culture radically affected by British colonialism. As she explores and analyzes many of the characteristics of her tribal group, she posits the women's desires for change, choice, and acceptance within a society in …

Writing The Wrongs Of Chancery And Victorian Society: Esther Summerson Of Bleak House And Defining The First-Person, Alexandra C. Cain May 2009

Writing The Wrongs Of Chancery And Victorian Society: Esther Summerson Of Bleak House And Defining The First-Person, Alexandra C. Cain

Honors Scholar Theses

“Writing the Wrongs of Chancery and Victorian Society: Esther Summerson of Bleak House and Defining the First-Person” discusses the identity crisis faced by the controversial first person narrator of Charles Dickens’s Bleak House. I argue that Esther is a complex character/narrator who develops an idealized self as a coping mechanism for her identity crisis. Dickens uses Esther’s illness as a physical manifestation of Esther’s separation from her mother and recognition of her identity crisis. By developing Esther’s identity crisis and using the illness to denote Esther’s separation from both her mother and her idealized self, Dickens creates a novel in …

Exploring Writing Of English Language Learners In Middle School: A Mixed Methods Study, Robin L. Danzak May 2009

Exploring Writing Of English Language Learners In Middle School: A Mixed Methods Study, Robin L. Danzak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study's purpose was to assess, through mixed methods, written linguistic features of 20 Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs) in middle school. Students came from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Participants wrote two expository and two narrative formal texts, each in Spanish and English, for a total of eight writing samples each. Additionally, students developed 10 journal entries in their language of choice, and 6 randomly selected, focal participants were interviewed for the qualitative analysis.

The quantitative analysis involved scoring formal texts at the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels. Scores were analyzed using Friedman's 2-way ANOVA by ranks, …

An Identity Of Opposition Against Urban Cosmopolitan Setting In Yasmina Khadra's "The Attack" (2006), Retno Sukardan Mamoto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Yasmina Khadra, a female name, pseudonym of Muhammed Moulessehoul, an Algerian military officer for 25 years is now a French citizen. John Cullen translates The attack (2006) from French. Rosenau's post-modernist perspective places the Israel-Palestine conflict in a context of social gap. Israel, a First World, whereas Palestine Third World, are both in the Middle East region. Amin Jaafari and his wife, Sihem, a couple of Arab naturalized citizens of Israel, live in urban cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv. Opposing Amin's success as a surgeon, Sihem is more attracted to fight for the Palestinian liberation for a homeland. Sihem camouflaged …

Reclaiming Our Identities: From Ethicist To Moral Theologian, M Therese Lysaught

Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The CHA Ethics Survey issues a challenge to those who "do" ethics within Catholic health care: is it time to reclaim the identity of the Catholic moral theologian for Catholic health care? If the answer is "yes," what will it take to do so?

Outside The Circle: The Juxtaposition Of Powwow Imagery And Cherokee Historical Representation, Dana Brumley Jan 2009

Outside The Circle: The Juxtaposition Of Powwow Imagery And Cherokee Historical Representation, Dana Brumley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis looks at the juxtaposition presented by the Eastern Cherokee's struggle to present an accurate historical representation of 'Cherokee' against the backdrop of the more lucrative 'Tourist-ready Indian', influenced by powwow imagery. The thesis gives a brief history of the contemporary powwow, discusses the debates surrounding its intrinsic value to American Indians as historically representative, and then examines the shared elements of Cherokee and powwow history. There is an analysis of the influence of powwow imagery on notions of Cherokee history and its correlation to the expectations of visitors to the Cherokee Reservation. Thus, the author argues that the …

Two Decades Of Research On Possible Selves And The “Missing Males” Problem In Choral Music, Patrick K. Freer Jan 2009

Two Decades Of Research On Possible Selves And The “Missing Males” Problem In Choral Music, Patrick K. Freer

Music Faculty Publications

Music education researchers have a lengthy history of examining reasons why individuals seek participation in musical activities. Within that history, however, the concept of ‘possible selves’ (Markus & Nurius, 1986) has received little attention until recently. In the broadest terms, possible selves are a person’s impressions of what they might become, what they would like to become, and what they fear becoming. This view of self-concept moves beyond a simple collection of self-attributed traits to encompass the idea that individuals actively manage their choices and actions in order to promote desirable selves and inhibit less-desirable selves. The focus of this …

Memento, Andrew Kania Jan 2009

Memento, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

The sleeper hit Memento (2000), directed by Christopher Nolan, is a brilliantly structured contemporary film noir, focused through the main character, Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), who has a debilitating memory condition. Hit on the head during a home invasion – "the incident" – Leonard can remember his life as an insurance-claims investigator before the incident, but he cannot form new long-term memories. Thus, every fifteen minutes or so, he becomes a partial tabula rasa afresh. The audience comes to understand this condition through Leonard's recounting the story of Sammy Jankis (Stephen Tobolowsky) in order to explain his own condition to …
