The Association Of Head Circumference With Selected Cognitive Outcomes In Older Adults In Charlotte County, Florida, Cathleen Copenhaver

OBJECTIVE: The brain reserve hypothesis was examined in a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from a community-based sample of 468 older adults residing in Charlotte County, Florida. The objective of the analysis was to determine the association between head circumference and eight cognitive outcomes and to assess any potential effect modification of existing associations by Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype. METHODS: Cognitive outcomes include scores from the Modified Mini-Mental State Exam (3MS), the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R), Stroop Color-Word Test, Trail-Making Test A and B, and a word-stem completion task measuring implicit memory. Intelligibility Of Clear Speech At Normal Rates For Older Adults With Hearing Loss, Billie Jo Shaw

Clear speech refers to a speaking style that is more intelligible than typical, conversational speaking styles. It is usually produced at a slower rate compared to conversational speech. Clear speech has been shown to be more intelligible than conversational speech for a large variety of populations, including both hearing impaired (Schum, 1996; Picheny, Durlach, & Braida, 1985; and Payton, Uchanski, & Braida, 1994) and normal hearing individuals (e.g. Uchanski, Choi, Braida, Reed, & Durlach, 1996) under a variety of conditions, including those in which presentation level, speaker, and environment are varied. A growing number of Jewish women are participating in adult bat mitzvah ceremonies in many synagogues across the United States. Little is known about the reasons why women choose to participate in a bat mitzvah ritual as an adult. It is also unclear if women of different ages have different reasons for participating in bat mitzvah.Older women were often not given the opportunity to participate in the bat mitzvah ritual as a young adult, and it is unknown why older women choose to accept the challenge of bat mitzvah.
