Faculty Dissertations

It adds to the body of literature validating discourse analysis as a viable and useful tool for biblical studies. It also suggests a literary framework for the Book of Revelation, with particular attention to discourse segmentation and peak. The procedure used in this dissertation has five steps. First, notional type is evaluated on the basis of speech-act theory and a combination of contingent temporal succession and agent orientation. Second, the surface text is analyzed for recurring semantic domains, verb …

Cassidy's "John's Gospel In New Perspective: Christology And The Realities Of Roman Power" - Book Review, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Richard Cassidy's latest book builds on some of the previous work he has done regarding the socio-political background of Luke/Acts, but now he applies his historical investigation into the policies of Roman authorities —as enacted toward Christians around the turn of the first century CE —to an understanding of various motifs and emphases in the Gospel of John. His thesis is stated succinctly at the outset: "In depicting Jesus' identity and mission within his Gospel, the evangelist John was concerned to present elements and themes that were especially significant for Christian readers facing Roman imperial claims and for any who …

The essence of the sanctuary doctrine is its unique revelation of Christ's ministry of reconciliation for and in us, enabling us to experience His love, which we can share with others in unselfish and sacrificial service so they see a genuine revelation of Jesus as the only hope for humanity. It embraces our mental, spiritual, and physical attributes, and is designed to transform sinners into victorious people who are patiently yet actively awaiting the coming of their Savior. "Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" (Rev. …

Deep in the Adventist theology of last-day happenings is a predicted development which portends the destiny of all living persons. We have heard it preached from pulpits for years—people will receive either the mark of the beast or the seal of God. This is the outcome of the third angels message, the great showdown of the great controversy.

On Following Jesus, Paul N. Anderson
On Following Jesus, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "Some Christian groups ask, "How can we be certain of our salvation?" Others ask, "How can we be sure we are right?" Still others ask, "How can we do good in the world?" The Quaker question, however, is, "How can we be, most radically and effectively, true followers of Jesus?" Interestingly, when this question is lived faithfully, the others tend to take care of themselves."
Transforming Worship, Paul N. Anderson
Transforming Worship, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "Transforming worship is both impressive and expressive. As we receive God's love for us and return our love for God, we find ourselves changed, transformed, renewed from the inside out. New insights help us live in the newness of life. Greater sensitivities emerge as we come to view those around us through the eyes of Jesus. We receive power to overcome life's obstacles and temptations. All things indeed become new, and creation even takes on another smell."
A People Of Vision, Paul N. Anderson
A People Of Vision, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "It is an absolute delight to worship and serve among a people of vision. Evangelical Quakers attempt great things for God because we continually ask the question: 'What would God have us do?" And a great deal gets done because people earnestly desire to follow God's leadings and further His work in the world. That's an inspiration!"

Anything Against Anyone, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "He grieved her loss. Without a word, she'd walked out on him after eight years of marriage. He didn't even have a clue that the relationship had been growing intolerable for her. Sure, they had their problems, but didn't all relationships? It just caught him totally unaware, and now there was nothing he could do to retrieve, let alone rebuild the relationship. The way she left had not only put an end to what had been, but he felt it also closed the door to future possibilities. Her "No!" was final. Their future was nil. The investments they'd made …
