Johannes Buxtorf I And The Circumcision Incident Of 1619, Stephen G. Burnett Jan 1989

Johannes Buxtorf I And The Circumcision Incident Of 1619, Stephen G. Burnett

Faculty Publications, Classics and Religious Studies Department

Johannes Buxtorf I has frequently been portrayed in the scholarly literature as a vigorous proponent of missions to the Jews and an implacable foe of their religion. The circumcision incident of 1619 casts a slightly different light upon Buxtorf and his relations with the Jews. While Buxtorf made his religious objections to Jewish circumcision clear, his opinion of the event and the city council's reaction to it differed markedly. Differing views of what constituted "appropriate" behavior for Christians toward Jews lie at the heart of this unhappy incident.

The Academic Study Of Judaism: A Challenge To The Reform Rabbi, David B. Ruderman Jan 1989

The Academic Study Of Judaism: A Challenge To The Reform Rabbi, David B. Ruderman

Departmental Papers (History)

Any discussion of the Reform rabbinate and the academic study of Judaism presupposes some distinct notion of the primary function of a rabbi, as well as a clear definition of what Torah means in the context of our contemporary community and the new settings in which Jewish learning are presently located. Admittedly, both definitions that I offer are subjective and incomplete and arise from my own unique situation of being both an academic scholar and a Reform rabbi, as well as the son of a Reform rabbi.

At The Intersection Of Cultures: The Historical Legacy Of Italian Jewry Prior To The Emancipation, David B. Ruderman

Departmental Papers (History)

Among the precious artifacts included in the Jewish Museum's exhibition on Italian-Jewish life is a work of singular importance. It is a lexicon of rabbinic literature called the Arukh, written by Nathan ben Jehiel of Rome (1035-c.1110) at the beginning of the twelfth century (cat. no. 61). Why so modest a work, a mere dictionary of words and phrases, should elicit special attention requires some elucidation.

Every Man Crying Out : Elizabethan Anti-Catholic Pamphlets And The Birth Of English Anti-Papism, Carol Ellen Wheeler Jan 1989

Every Man Crying Out : Elizabethan Anti-Catholic Pamphlets And The Birth Of English Anti-Papism, Carol Ellen Wheeler

Dissertations and Theses

To the Englishmen of the sixteenth century the structure of the universe seemed clear and logical. God had created and ordered it in such a way that everyone and everything had a specific, permanent place which carried with it appropriate duties and responsibilities. Primary among these requirements was obedience to one's betters, up the Chain of Being, to God. Unity demanded uniformity; obedience held the universe together. Within this context, the excommunication of Elizabeth Tudor in 1570 both redefined and intensified the strain between the crown and the various religious groups in the realm. Catholics had become traitors, or ...
