The Task Force on the Status of Women established by President Dale W. Lick in December 1987, submitted its Report in June 1988. This executive summary is intended to communicate in a condensed form, the contents of the full report. Patricia Roberts, 33, was named head coach of the University of Maine women’s basketball program August 23, 1988, and thus became just the third head coach of that program since its inception as an intercollegiate activity in 1975.
Although this is her first head coaching position, Trish comes with the credentials that will make her an outstanding role model for the women who will make up the 1988-89 roster. An All-American basketball player, an Olympian and a former professional player, Trish has also had valuable coaching experience in the big time of women’s basketball.

The University of Maine men’s swimming team will have one of its deepest teams in many years in 1988-89. Head coach Alan Switzer has brought in 15 freshman which join a strong returning class that includes 13 veterans. Maine was 6-4 in dual meets last season, and finished sixth in the Eastern championships.

Recommendations made 15 years ago on the status of women at the University of Maine have not been fulfilled, members of The Task Force on the Status of Women say. In fact, they say, many of the recommendations in the 1988 task force report resemble recommendations made in the first report.

The appointment of the first female acting dean at the University of Maine in nine years may be an indication that an investigation of the status of women on campus prompted the administration to act immediately. In addition to Julia M. Watkins as an actin dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, two more women were selected in July and August to serve as assistant vice presidents in separate departments.

Many women at the university find themselves in inferior roles in both the workplace and the classroom, according to a report that has received much attention since its release last month. The Task Force on the Status of Women studied the roles of females at the university for more than six months. The group concluded that the university parallels society when it comes to the treatment of women, said Marisue Pickering, executive assistant to UMaine President Dale Lick.

The major findings of the Task Force on the Status of Women are summarized in the following pages in two parts. In the first we respond to our charge to review data concerning the current status of women in relation to their numbers, distribution, retention, compensation, advancement, and representation at all levels. The evidence here consists primarily of information the University routinely collects and analyzes; the data are reasonably complete and accurate. They also indicate clearly the presence of barriers to the full participation of women in the life of the University.

Maine will again face a difficult schedule. It begins with their annual two-week spring trip to Florida that includes tournaments at the University of South Florida and Florida State. The Bears then embark on a six-week New England schedule that will be played primarily on the road. The Bears will feel the loss of several key players: pitcher Lynn Hearty (18-8, 1.42 ERA), first baseman Michelle Duprey (.327), second baseman Denise Boutin (.314), third baseman Sue Goulet (.369), shortstop Asa Brown, and outfielder Kerrie Higgins. Cover: Maya—painted clay figure from Jaina Island, Campeche, Mexico, 500-700A. D., approximately 100 percent. The clay figure is from a superb assemblage of pre-Hispanic materials from Mexico and Central America donated to the University of Maine’s Hudson Museum from the estate of William P Palmer III. In addition to this fine collection, Palmer donated an extensive array of objects from the Northwest Coast. Palmer earned his undergraduate degree in history and government from the University of Maine, and remained a strong, active supporter of the institution throughout his lifetime.
