The Political Character Of Adventist Rhetoric Until The End Of The Civil War, Jeffrey Boyd Smith Dec 1983

The Political Character Of Adventist Rhetoric Until The End Of The Civil War, Jeffrey Boyd Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis attempts to account for the emergence, development, and function of Seventh-day Adventist apocalyptic rhetoric within its social context. As the title indicates, the argument is that the rhetoric was political in character, having been derived from the apocalyptic rhetoric of American "civil religion," which originated in the colonial wars with the French during the eighteenth century. After tracing the formation of Adventist rhetoric from William Miller's preaching of the Second Coming to John N. Andrew's interpretation of the third angel's message found in Revelation 14, the author concludes with an analysis of this rhetoric's influence on Adventist behavior …

Women's Sports And Physical Education At The University Of Tennessee: 1899-1939, Adam R. Hornbuckle Dec 1983

Women's Sports And Physical Education At The University Of Tennessee: 1899-1939, Adam R. Hornbuckle

Masters Theses

Sports historians have demonstrated that the early twentieth century, particularly the 1920s and the 1930s, was a period of both increasing and decreasing opportunities of women to participate in skilled and competitive athletics. Most would agree that a philosophy of anti-competition and universal participation as advocated by the Women's Division of the National Amateur Athletic Federation (WDNAAF) steered women's collegiate sports and physical education during the period. However, they disagree over the extent of the application of that philosophy and its effectiveness once put into practice. While examining the development of women's sports and physical education at the University of …

Ringers Of Bells And Teachers Of Civilization : The Work Of The California Franciscan Missionaries, 1769-1821, Gilberto Vega Sep 1983

Ringers Of Bells And Teachers Of Civilization : The Work Of The California Franciscan Missionaries, 1769-1821, Gilberto Vega

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 1769 Spain took active and decisive actions to settle the vast region of her empire known as California. To accomplish the feat she turned to the willing hands of the Franciscan missionaries. The friars willingly answered their call and through their labors assured Spanish hegemony over the region. Both soldiers and friars had participated in the project but the latter's role has usually been underestimated.

The usual mental picture of the Franciscan monks that settled California is one that belittles their greatness. Such views regard the friars as crude religious fanatics with little education and intelligence, whose only pleasure …

A Frontier Biography: William Campbell Of King's Mountain, David George Malgee Aug 1983

A Frontier Biography: William Campbell Of King's Mountain, David George Malgee

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to tell William Campbell's biography, simultaneously examining not only his better known military achievements, but also his contributions as a frontier justice, member of the House of Delegates, and an American patriot. Nearly all documentary evidence concerns Campbell's life after 1770. Thus, the primary object of this paper is his last decade, his period of public prominence. Since Campbell's fame was wrought to a large degree by the events of the American Revolution, a major objective of this thesis is to determine Campbell's impact on that struggle for independence.

Immigrants In Richmond, Virginia : Lebanese, Armenians And Greeks, 1900-1925, Kaye Brinkley Spalding Aug 1983

Immigrants In Richmond, Virginia : Lebanese, Armenians And Greeks, 1900-1925, Kaye Brinkley Spalding

Master's Theses

In most of the published histories and memoirs of the city of Richmond there is little or no mention of its post Civil War immigrant population. If any ethnic group is referred to, it is almost invariably either the Germans, the Irish or the Jews, in spite of the fact that it is evident from even the most casual perusal of the Richmond city directory or the telephone directory that there are many city residents whose ancestors were not the traditional Anglo-Saxons, their slaves, or members of the three above mentioned groups.

The Albigensian Heresy And The Gnostic Tradition, John Stine Penman Aug 1983

The Albigensian Heresy And The Gnostic Tradition, John Stine Penman

Masters Theses

That the Albigensian heresy represents a resurgence of early Christian Gnosticism is the thesis of this work. The study defines Gnosticism in terms of its pattern of prevalent characteristics and traces the course of Gnosticism and its emergence as the Albigensianism of the Middle Ages. Using the finding of Hans Soderberg's La Religion des Cathares: Etudes, sur le gnosticisme de la basse antiquite et du moyen age as a point of departure through the analysis of documents discovered since 1949, the study shows that Gnosticism and the Albigensian heresy represent a continued tradition of religious expression as a recognizable alternative …

The First Minute Book Of The Supreme Court Of The State Of Louisiana 1813 To May, 1818: An Annotated Edition, Sybil Ann Boudreaux May 1983

The First Minute Book Of The Supreme Court Of The State Of Louisiana 1813 To May, 1818: An Annotated Edition, Sybil Ann Boudreaux

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana, established by the first state constitution (1812) as the only appellate court in the judicial system, commenced its work on March 1, 1813. The Court's jurisdiction was limited to civil cases. It also had control over admissions to the bar and the rules for the administration of its own business. Created in the wake of the conflict between proponents of Louisiana's traditional civil law system and the promulgators of the federal government's territorial policy of common law imposition, the Supreme Court reinforced the ultimately accepted continuance of civil law within the limitations …

Henry Alexander Wise, Minister To Brazil, 1844-1847, Dennis Rodgers Custis May 1983

Henry Alexander Wise, Minister To Brazil, 1844-1847, Dennis Rodgers Custis

Master's Theses

Henry Wise played an important role in local, state, and national affairs for forty years. He is best remembered as the Governor of Virginia who was responsible for the hanging of John Brown; however, he distinguished himself as a congressman, general, and foreign minister. I have chosen to examine and emphasize Wise's career as Minister to Brazil, 1844-1847. The first chapter of the thesis, however, will provide a biographical sketch of Henry A. Wise.

Wise was born and reared in my native county, Accomack. Although a man of great achievements, he is not well known in the county today. I …

A History Of The Village Of Midlothian, Virginia, Emphasizing The Period 1835-1935, Barbara Irene Burtchett May 1983

A History Of The Village Of Midlothian, Virginia, Emphasizing The Period 1835-1935, Barbara Irene Burtchett

Master's Theses

An overview of Midlothian from its beginning and particularly for the century 1835 to 1935 reveals a village (unincorporated) that developed to house and provide necessities for the people working in the coal mines. The same village continued to survive when the mines closed because the railroad that had come through the village to serve the local people, provided both freight and passenger services, jobs, and transportation to jobs in Richmond. As more people bought cars and trucks the railroad service dwindled but continued to provide passenger service for the entire first half of the twentieth century. Richmond took a …

Wartime Problems Of American Railroads, 1939-1945, Walter Lawrence Mcmurtry May 1983

Wartime Problems Of American Railroads, 1939-1945, Walter Lawrence Mcmurtry

History ETDs

The World War II experience of the American railroads was characterized by a close relationship between the railroads and the federal government. Unlike in World War I, however, when the railroads were actually operated by the government, the railroads in World War II remained under private control. This reflected President Franklin D. Roosevelt's own preference as well as that of the railroad managers. The railroads faced major problems in World War II. The amount of domestic transportation required was enormous. But highway transportation was restricted during the war by shortages of gasoline and rubber, and coastwise water transportation was restricted …

History Of The Forty-Second Parallel As A Political Boundary Between Utah And Idaho, Nancy Bergeson May 1983

History Of The Forty-Second Parallel As A Political Boundary Between Utah And Idaho, Nancy Bergeson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The original purpose of this paper was to discover why Cache County, Utah at one time taxed towns now located in the State of Idaho. Later, it became apparent that a history of the forty-second parallel was necessary to fully understand the reasoning used by both the Federal and local governments in setting up the political boundaries of Utah and Cache County. Therefore, it was necessary to research the records of the Federal Government, Cache County Government, the LDS Journal History, and diaries of residents of Cache and Bear Lake Valleys, as well as detailed accounts of Spanish and Mexican …

The American Race Issue As A Factor In “The Black Horror On The Rhine" Controversy (1919-1922) As Reported By The New York Times And Selected American Periodicals, W. Wilson Woods Apr 1983

The American Race Issue As A Factor In “The Black Horror On The Rhine" Controversy (1919-1922) As Reported By The New York Times And Selected American Periodicals, W. Wilson Woods

Masters Theses

The international controversy arising from the use of black colonial troops by the French occupation forces in the German Rhineland after World War I is examined in this paper. Particular emphasis is given to American press accounts of the events on the Rhine (1919- 1922) including those of the New York Times, the Nation, the Literary Digest, and the New Republic. Two questions are addressed: Were the events on the Rhine, particularly the alleged atrocities committed by French black colonials, accurately reported? Secondly, was the reporting of the controversy affected by racial violence in the United States?

With the exception …

Seventeenth Century Settlement Of The Nansemond River In Virginia, Emmett Edward Bottoms Apr 1983

Seventeenth Century Settlement Of The Nansemond River In Virginia, Emmett Edward Bottoms

History Theses & Dissertations

The estuarine Nansemond River in southeastern Virginia provided exploitable resources to Indians and English colonists during the seventeenth century. Colonization of the Nansemond, attempted in 1609, was resisted by the Nansemond Indians and was accomplished only after they were decimated and displaced. Anglicans and dissenting Puritans and Quakers established churches and meeting houses along the river. Richard Bennett, a Puritan and later a Quaker, brought the first Negro into the Nansemond River area and served as Governor of Virginia. Settlers established farms, conformed to a socio-political system, questioned royal authority during Bacon's Rebellion, and were afforded the protection of a …

Jewish Women Reformers And Jewish Immigrant Women: The Columbian Council Of Pittsburgh, 1893-1920, Eileen Chotiner Jan 1983

Jewish Women Reformers And Jewish Immigrant Women: The Columbian Council Of Pittsburgh, 1893-1920, Eileen Chotiner

Honors Papers

I began this project with an interest in Jewish immigrant women's adjustment to American life. I first examined general patterns of immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century, to determine how Jewish immigration fit into the patterns and specifically, the. role of Jewish women in Jewish immigration. I also sought to discover how Jews differed from other immigrant groups, and how these differences affected the establishment of Jewish communities in America.

Immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century falls into two categories : from approximately 1840 to 1880, immigrants came mostly from northern, western and central …

The United States And Naval Limitation: From The Washington Conference To Pearl Harbor, David Jonas Murphy Jan 1983

The United States And Naval Limitation: From The Washington Conference To Pearl Harbor, David Jonas Murphy

Honors Papers

In conducting their foreign affairs, nations rarely act for purely altruistic reasons. Often, when their stated objectives are noble ones- such as world peace- one can find others which stem from the perceived needs of the individual nation or nations. The United States has not been an exception to this rule. Between World War I and World War II the foreign policy of the United States had as one of its major goals world peace or, failing world peace, peace for the United States. Naturally, this was not a totally altruistic ideal. It was believed that the United States would …

Voices In The Wind: American Opposition To The Korean War, Joseph E. Slater Jan 1983

Voices In The Wind: American Opposition To The Korean War, Joseph E. Slater

Honors Papers

Very little has been written on the peace movement during the Korean war. Historian Joseph Conlin assessed the period and concluded that "when hostilities with North Korean troops commenced in 1950, the American antiwar movement stood at its nadir." Lawrence Wittner's fine book Rebels Against War is devoted to the American peace movement from 1941 to 1960. Yet out of this book's 300- odd pages, less than three concern the movement during the Korean war- and most of this discussion is focused on those elements in the movement which supported the war. This is typical of the major secondary sources …

Odisseia Portuguesa Via Hudson, Massachusetts, U.S.A., Adalino Cabral Jan 1983

Odisseia Portuguesa Via Hudson, Massachusetts, U.S.A., Adalino Cabral

Graduate Masters Theses

The Odisseia Portuguesa (Portuguese Odyssey) is an attempt to describe the adventures and search for better living abroad of a people--their pains, agonies, frustrations, anxieties, complex social, economic, psychological, linguistic and cultural experiences in a land to which immigrants now call home. Although the focus is on the Portuguese in Hudson, Massachusetts, it is safe to say that the setting could really be anywhere in any land to which they immigrate, with the exception, of course, of other lands where the culture and language are not too different (ex. Brazil...).

From Trusteeship To Containment: American Involvement In Vietnam 1945-1950, Sarah E. Dranoff Jan 1983

From Trusteeship To Containment: American Involvement In Vietnam 1945-1950, Sarah E. Dranoff

Honors Papers

The American involvement in Vietnam has motivated extensive scholarship and reflection from diverse segments of American society. The Vietnamese war for independence and the dynamics and nature of American intervention have been approached from the perspectives of many different disciplines and from all points on the political continuum. The majority of these works address, either directly or implicitly, the fundamental issue of how American involvement can be explained and understood.

The historiography of American involvement in Vietnam covers a wide range of interpretations of the impetus behind the initial commitment, the reasons for progressive escalation, and the rationales for why …

An Appraisal: George S. Messersmith On The Relationship Between The United States And Germany 1933-1934, Donald C. Philips Jan 1983

An Appraisal: George S. Messersmith On The Relationship Between The United States And Germany 1933-1934, Donald C. Philips

Honors Papers

On a day to day basis, Messersmith was considered to be the State Department's most reliable and informed observer. He was able to establish contacts with a number of high ranking Nazi officials and he used these contacts to substantiate his reports. Messersmith commented on almost every aspect of German life and these comments were read by most American policymakers, including Roosevelt. His reports were considered particularly valuable by two State Department officials, William Phillips and J. Pierrepont Moffat, who both worked in the Western European Division.

Some of Messersmith's analysis is skewed and, sometimes, incorrect. There were two faults …

Labor Violence In The Southern West Virginia Coal Fields, Mingo And Logan Counties 1919-1921, Henry Hagon Hodges Jan 1983

Labor Violence In The Southern West Virginia Coal Fields, Mingo And Logan Counties 1919-1921, Henry Hagon Hodges

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The preoccupation of the American federal government involving the eventual defeat of Imperial Germany helped generate an unprecedented growth in the United Mine Workers of America. Traditional antagonists recognized a temporary truce in the struggle to unionize America’s labor force during World War I as the Wilson administration and the leaders of organized labor avoided confrontations that would disrupt the war effort. Because of the absence of federal regulations the United Mine Workers of America finally managed to gain recognition among the majority of the nation's coal miners during the war. Organized in 1890, the UMWA had 20,000 members out …

The Sentinel And Orange And Protestant Advocate, 1877-1896: An Orange View Of Canada, Andrew Thomson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Sentinel and Orange and Protestant Advocate was the organ of the Orange Order in Canada and spoke for the Lodge on a wide range of social and political issues. This thesis will examine the paper’s views on moral and religious questions and the major issues at the three levels of Canadian politics between 1877 and 1896.

The paper was published weekly in Toronto and distributed across North America, although the bulk of the circulation remained in Ontario. The Sentinel was published and edited by Edward Frederick Clarke, who also pursued a successful career at all three levels in Canadian …
