Community Structure On The Urban Frontier: The Jews Of Portland, Oregon, 1849-1887, Robert Scott Cline Dec 1981

Community Structure On The Urban Frontier: The Jews Of Portland, Oregon, 1849-1887, Robert Scott Cline

Dissertations and Theses

No other ethnic group enjoyed the level of success, defined in terms of economic status and social acceptance, attained by Portland Jews in the second half of the nineteenth century. Hailing predominantly from the German states of northern and central Europe, the Jewish pioneers transplanted middle class values and mercantile skills in their new home. From a small unstable population of single men in the 1850s, Portland Jewry grew into an affluent class conscious family oriented community by the mid-1880s.

The center of Portland's Jewish life during the formative years was Congregation Beth Israel, the first congregation in the Pacific …

Prolegomena To The Study Of Hegel's Philosophy Of Religion, Alan Borcherding Dec 1981

Prolegomena To The Study Of Hegel's Philosophy Of Religion, Alan Borcherding

Master of Divinity Thesis

This introduction is designed to aid a person with the desire to study the Hegelian philosophy of religion; it is not itself an introduction to his philosophy of religion (this ought to be obvious from the relative length of the early chapters and the relative brevity of the last two chapter0. It is hoped that three particular enemies of the reader in Hegel's philosophy can be overcome in this paper: the tracing of origins, the identification of main principles, and the vast literature.

Developing Pastoral Counseling In The Missionary Church Of Brazil Through The Oms International, Darrell Wayne Mishler Dec 1981

Developing Pastoral Counseling In The Missionary Church Of Brazil Through The Oms International, Darrell Wayne Mishler

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The local pastor will have ample opportunity to counsel his flock. This, simply, is a fact. People will bring their problems to him, and the well-being of his ministry-not to mention himself--may depend on the pastor's management of these important times. The "people-helper"-oriented pastor will probably welcome this ministry, even though it has the potential of being a stressful form of shepherding. A goal for this project is to facilitate the development of the pastoral counseling role of the Brazilian local pastor, making him as totally effective a minister as possible. For, to quote Dr. Wayne Oates, "... (the pastor's) …

In The Toils Of War: Andrew Johnson And The Federal Occupation Of Tennessee, 1862-1865, Edwin T. Hardison Dec 1981

In The Toils Of War: Andrew Johnson And The Federal Occupation Of Tennessee, 1862-1865, Edwin T. Hardison

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a study of Andrew Johnson of Tennessee and his efforts to restore his adopted state to the Union amidst the agony of civil war and the cataclysm of social revolution. Frustrated in his efforts to prevent the upheaval of secession, the southern Democrat supported the war policies of Abraham Lincoln, first in the Senate and late as military governor of Tennessee. The military governments, created by the Republican executive, partially to maintain the presidential prerogative in reconstruction and partially as an expedient means of administering captured territory, proved to be a source of infinite conflict (and, except for …

The Monastic Libraries Of The Diocese Of Winchester During The Late Anglo-Saxon And Norman Periods, Steven F. Vincent Dec 1981

The Monastic Libraries Of The Diocese Of Winchester During The Late Anglo-Saxon And Norman Periods, Steven F. Vincent

Masters Theses

The objective of this thesis was to describe the libraries of the monastic houses of the diocese of Winchester in the century following the Norman Conquest. An analysis was made of lists of surviving books and of books which could be identified through other primary and secondary sources. A study was also made of the careers of bishops, abbots, priors, and other scholars known to have worked at each of these establishments, in order to determine the nature of the intellectual activity at each monastery. Catalogs of other twelfth century monastic libraries were compared with the works identified in the …

Recent Developments In Daniel Research, Erwin J. Joham Dec 1981

Recent Developments In Daniel Research, Erwin J. Joham

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis analyzes and evaluates significant directions in Daniel research during the past fifteen to twenty years. The material is organized in two categories (a) introductory, (b) exegetical, which form the two main parts of the thesis.

In the first chapter on introductory material I review studies dealing with provenance, authorship, text, and literary style and form of the Book of Daniel. The second chapter examines the interpretations of specific portions of the Book, particularly chapter seven.

The general finding of this study shows a more cautious use of extra-Biblical sources for Daniel, and a growing emphasis upon the Biblical, …

Tristan Und Isolde: Gottfried's Paradigm For Emancipation, Elvira Borgstadt Dec 1981

Tristan Und Isolde: Gottfried's Paradigm For Emancipation, Elvira Borgstadt

Masters Theses

The romance is seen as a paradigm for emancipation in which Gottfried von Strasshurg deals with -the search for selfactualization and individualism which began to manifest itself in Western medieval society. The paradigm consists of two phases, entailing six consecutive steps of interaction between individual and society: the first poses the problem of alienation and is initiated by (l) the education of the individual which leads to (2) his/her isolation from mainstream society and ends in (3) the individuals attempt to gain full integration; the second phase deals with the consequences of alienation and brings a solution in that (4) …

Early History And Influence Of Harvard College’S Hollis Professorship Of Divinity (The First Endowed Professorial Chair In America), Russell Vernon Kohr Dec 1981

Early History And Influence Of Harvard College’S Hollis Professorship Of Divinity (The First Endowed Professorial Chair In America), Russell Vernon Kohr

Masters Theses

The creation by Thomas Hollis of London of the Hollis Professorship of Divinity at Harvard College in 1721, the first endowed professorial chair in America, had three effects. First, it elevated to the chair a series of distinguished minister professors from whose classroom came most of the clergy of eighteenth century Massachusetts, to say nothing of those of the remainder of New England. Secondly, the establishment of the chair broke the lockstep of the practice inherited by Harvard College from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, by which a tutor taught all members of a class all subjects. Henceforth the divinity professor …

The Coming Of The Birdman: The Aviator's Image In Oregon, 1905-1915, Patrick John Harris Nov 1981

The Coming Of The Birdman: The Aviator's Image In Oregon, 1905-1915, Patrick John Harris

Dissertations and Theses

Between 1905 and 1915 the aeroplane was tested at exhibitions and became a practical machine. Some observers, however, greeted this technological marvel with ambivalence. Skeptics felt that if the aeroplane could alter common perceptions about natural laws, it might also challenge time honored ideals and attitudes about the nature of man.

In response, newspapers and magazines fashioned the aviator's image. The aviator was daring yet responsible, romantic yet reasonable.

Some writers and reporters believed that an aviator's self-confidence and high moral character contributed to control in the air. By controlling the aeroplane with mastery and grace, an aviator remained master …

St. Paul's Apostolic Authority And His First Letter To The Corinthians, Robert Weinhold Nov 1981

St. Paul's Apostolic Authority And His First Letter To The Corinthians, Robert Weinhold

Master of Divinity Thesis

The search for an authoritative word from God has been at the heart and center of man's struggle for existence since the beginning of time. God, in His wisdom, has seen fit to provide that authoritative word through many messengers in the course of history. Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Isaiah and Malachi were all messengers, mediators, of God's sacred will to his chosen and beloved people, Israel. With the sending of his own Son, God sent the ultimate messenger in the perfect God-Man, Jesus. Even though Jesus spoke God's message clearly and perfectly, man still needed guidance in understanding God's will …

High Technology And The Church: The Computer As An Aid To Ministry, Warren Uecker Nov 1981

High Technology And The Church: The Computer As An Aid To Ministry, Warren Uecker

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possible uses and potential benefits to the church on the congregational level of highly technological advances in the area of data management and information handling. More specifically, this discussion will center around the feasibility of the use of the small computer in the parish setting, including areas not only involving the financial and bookkeeping functions of the congregation but also, and in more detail, other potential uses of a computer system which could benefit the mission and ministry of the parish.

Land Grants, Land Use, Land Alienation, Mary K. Garner Oct 1981

Land Grants, Land Use, Land Alienation, Mary K. Garner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Governments often used the promise of land as a means to implement policy. Whether the land was in the form of a large grant to a successful explorer, or in the offer of a homestead on the frontier, the motive for such grants was seldom entirely altruistic. Most grants contained stipulations for settlement and cultivation because a growing population was necessary for economic development. Rulers of Florida also offered land grants to encourage a particular religion, to protect shipping, or to establish protection against Indian attacks. When Florida became part of the United States, large sections of the territory were …

"The Tide Of The Unconscious" Jung, Bosch And The Archetypes Of The Garden Of Earthly Delights, Andrea R. Peck Oct 1981

"The Tide Of The Unconscious" Jung, Bosch And The Archetypes Of The Garden Of Earthly Delights, Andrea R. Peck

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Many scholars have discussed the meaning of Hieronymous Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights concluding that Bosch's works were of a conscious nature relating to the real world. By contrast, this study, using the theories of Carl Jung, fragments Bosch's work and sees the milieu of his art through the eyes of the collective unconscious. Accordingly, a number of explanations of Jungian ideas are presented with the view to better understanding Bosch: Jung's theory of the archetypes, his view of Christianity, his analysis of medieval alchemy, as well as matrix archetypes and symbolic forms relating to The Garden. Through this …

Anna Held: A Biography, Michael Owen Hoffman Sep 1981

Anna Held: A Biography, Michael Owen Hoffman

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis, a biography of the French actress, Anna Held (1873-1918), is an attempt to place her in proper perspective in American history. Essentially a record of Miss Held from birth to death, it highlights many events that made her famous. Included are examples of publicity generated by her manager-husband, Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.

Much credit can be awarded Ziegfeld for his expertise in publicity stunts and promotion. Undue praise, however, has been attributed to him for the origin of the Ziegfeld Follies and the success of Anna Held.

Anna was a Continental success long before she met him. His promotion …

Towards A Model For The Religious Nurture Of Black Young Adults In Urban Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, Byron Dulan Sep 1981

Towards A Model For The Religious Nurture Of Black Young Adults In Urban Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, Byron Dulan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Black young adults in urban Seventh-day Adventist churches are not only leaving the fellowship of the church in alarming numbers, but those who continue with the church do not seem to be growing in spiritual maturity as might be expected. Written from the historical, sociological, and theological perspective, the thesis endeavors to analyze the dynamics at work in the Black church and among urban Black young adults, with a view toward developing a viable program of religious nurture at the local church level.

Since the 1940's, little has been written regarding religious nurture in Black churches of any Christian denomination …

The Urban Renewal Movement In Omaha, 1954-1970, Donald Louis Stevens Jr. Aug 1981

The Urban Renewal Movement In Omaha, 1954-1970, Donald Louis Stevens Jr.

Student Work

By 1954, the year President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a national housing act, one hundred years had passed since a group of Iowa businessmen crossed the Missouri River and surveyed Omaha City. The townsite formed the only metropolis in Nebraska at the midpoint of the twentieth century. Suffering from age and neglect, sections in and around the downtown core of Omaha became the object of a controversial crusade by civic leaders. A variety of business, labor, professional and government interests accepted the Eisenhower legislation as a practical way to rebuild the deteriorated areas. The law contained a slum clearance scheme …

Allegory In The Novels Of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Norbert Louis Elliot Iii Aug 1981

Allegory In The Novels Of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Norbert Louis Elliot Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

When Isaac Bashevis Singer was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1978, he was still largely an unknown artist, and his work certainly had not been given the critical attention it deserved. At best, books on Singer are appreciative criticism that lack a systematic frame of reference through which the artistry of the novels may be approached.

My approach in the present study is essentially that of a formalist critic. I have sought to define the shaping artistic principle of each of Singer's novels, and in doing this I have been able to isolate Singer's allegorical tendencies. Thus Singer …

A Study Of The Auchinleck Manuscript: Investigations Into The Process Of Book Making In The Fourteenth Century, Timothy Allen Shonk Aug 1981

A Study Of The Auchinleck Manuscript: Investigations Into The Process Of Book Making In The Fourteenth Century, Timothy Allen Shonk

Doctoral Dissertations

Our knowledge of book production in the fourteenth century is sketchy. Historical evidence provides us with some general information about a few men involved in the dissemination of literature, but there still remains a gap in our knowledge about the business aspects of pre-Chaucerian book production. In an effort to provide some information to fill this gap, I have investigated one of the first volumes of miscellaneous material produced in the fourteenth century, the Auchinleck manuscript, to see what could be learned about the production methods behind this book and, by inference, what could be learned about the production of …

The Evolution Of American Expository Prose Style As Exemplified By The Easy Chair Columnists Of Harper's Magazine, Cherie Rouse Aug 1981

The Evolution Of American Expository Prose Style As Exemplified By The Easy Chair Columnists Of Harper's Magazine, Cherie Rouse

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis aims to describe the way American expository prose style evolved during the period 1851 to 1981 as exemplified by the Easy Chair columnists of Harper's Magazine. Major premises of the study are that style and meaning are the same, but that a writer chooses among various shades of meaning, sometimes on the basis of rhetorical strategy, and thus it is possible to make meaningful statements about a writer's style.

The research methods emphasized synthesis of many different kinds of information about each author's writing, rather than complete reliance on impressionistic judgement or on quantified data. For each author …

Faith And Readiness In The Faith Stage Theory Of James W. Fowler, Douglas Herrmann Jul 1981

Faith And Readiness In The Faith Stage Theory Of James W. Fowler, Douglas Herrmann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

James W. Fowler's theory of faith stage development has received widespread attention and general approval, especially in religious education circles. The first part of this paper examines the stage theory of Fowler, concentrating on the concept of faith assumed by this theorist. The second part applies the theory to secondary religious, education, following the concept of "readiness" inherent in Fowler's work.

The research procedure for the first part consists of a survey of literature in three areas: 1. Fowler's published work from 1974, when he began, to the present; 2. critiques of Fowler's work; 3. the writings of selected theologians …

Theological Education In The Third World: An Appraisal And Recommendation, Thomas Warren Hawkins Land Jun 1981

Theological Education In The Third World: An Appraisal And Recommendation, Thomas Warren Hawkins Land

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Theological education in the third world is caning of age, but not without growing pains. The church overseas has been experiencing tremendous growth in recent years and is becoming more mature. Because of this, the demand for well-trained leaders has increased remarkably. In many areas of the world, the established theological schools have not been able to supply the necessary numbers of trained pastors required by the churches. This is further aggravated by the fact that not all of the graduates of theological and Bible schools actually became pastors. This phenomenon has precipitated a serious and necessary re-evaluation of the …

Joseph Bates' Logbook Of The Brig Empress: An Analysis And Appraisal, Jerry E. Daly Jun 1981

Joseph Bates' Logbook Of The Brig Empress: An Analysis And Appraisal, Jerry E. Daly

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In August of 1827 Joseph Bates embarked on the final voyage of his career. Throughout the eleven month trip he kept a daily journal in which he recorded his thoughts and experiences. While little is said about the life of a sea captain, Bates' record provides us with a glimpse into the private, inner man. Bates revealed his affection for the family and friends he left behind; his lack of patience for a crew that failed to see the importance of religion and temperance; his discouragement over trading in South America; and his respect and love for God. Bates' journal, …

Evaluation Of Blissymbolics As A Means Of Communication For The Deaf-Cerebral Palsy Population, Linda Howells Jun 1981

Evaluation Of Blissymbolics As A Means Of Communication For The Deaf-Cerebral Palsy Population, Linda Howells

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purposes of this study are:

  1. To present the deaf-cerebral palsied population with a more functional means of communication.
  2. To test the validity of using a non-vocal means of communication, Blissymbolics, when other more traditional methods of teaching communication skills (sign language or verbal communication) have been ineffective.

Blissymbolics has been found to be an effective means of communication with cerebral palsy children who are unable to develop verbal communication skills. However, there is no research in the use of Blissymbolics with the deaf-cerebral palsy population.

The traditional means of communication used with the nonspeaking deaf person (manual sign language) …

The Evolution Of Prenatal Care In The United States : The Formative Years, Cristina M. Thomsen Jun 1981

The Evolution Of Prenatal Care In The United States : The Formative Years, Cristina M. Thomsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the early decades of the twentieth century prenatal care became an accepted part of routine obstetrical care. This thesis is a description of the evolution of the prenatal care idea in the United States during these years. Two approaches are used in this description. An internal approach to prenatal care notes the maturation of procedure and technique. An external approach notes the inpatient and outpatient suggestions for providing prenatal care, the suggestions for educating the public to value and expect prenatal care and the medical profession to provide such care, and the varied promoters of such care, with their …

Advanced Decorative Ceramics Techniques For High School Students, Deborah Ann Kent May 1981

Advanced Decorative Ceramics Techniques For High School Students, Deborah Ann Kent

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis deals with the implementation of luster and underglaze ceramic decorating techniques into the secondary ceramic curriculum. The formation and presentation of this unit is based upon historical and contemporary research of lusters and underglazes, as well as the author's own work with the materials. An instructional unit was designed to fulfill three primary objectives. First, to acquaint the student with the basic materials and techniques; second, to introduce the student to the conceptualization of successful imagery; third, to give the student ample opportunity to explore the uses and possibilities of the materials.
