Anna Held: A Biography, Michael Owen Hoffman
Anna Held: A Biography, Michael Owen Hoffman
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis, a biography of the French actress, Anna Held (1873-1918), is an attempt to place her in proper perspective in American history. Essentially a record of Miss Held from birth to death, it highlights many events that made her famous. Included are examples of publicity generated by her manager-husband, Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.
Much credit can be awarded Ziegfeld for his expertise in publicity stunts and promotion. Undue praise, however, has been attributed to him for the origin of the Ziegfeld Follies and the success of Anna Held.
Anna was a Continental success long before she met him. His promotion …

On Reading Poems: Visual & Verbal Icons In William Carlos Williams' «Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus», Irene R. Fairley
On Reading Poems: Visual & Verbal Icons In William Carlos Williams' «Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus», Irene R. Fairley
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Williams' admiration for Brueghel's landscape is coded in structural and stylistic correspondences between the poem and the painting. Structures in the poem have effects analogous to the use of devices of color, line, foregrounding in the painting. The poem, like the painting, presents a «neutral» scene but subtly insures the reader's involvement. Further, Williams draws a visual statement so that graphic features suggest a global image isomorphic with the motif of descent. Features of the poem, such as line and clause length, syntactic construction, semantic coherence, are discussed as factors that contribute to rapid glancing and increase readability. A study …

Semiotic Consequences, Jonathan Culler
Semiotic Consequences, Jonathan Culler
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This paper outlines the semiotic perspectives of Saussure and Peirce and the points at which these quite different theories intersect. It considers the implications of these points of intersection for literary studies and uses the example of Oedipus Rex to illustrate the semiotic character of acts and facts.

Climbing Learners' Hill: Benedictines At White Earth, 1878-1945, Carol J. Berg Osb
Saint Benedict’s Monastery Publications
Benedictine sisters and monks administered and staffed a boarding school on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota from 1882-1945, responding to a request from the local bishop and to the Peace Policy of President Grant. Church denominations were asked to cooperate with the government in Christianizing and “civilizing” the Indians—on and off-reservations. With significant aid from federal funds, various denominations, primarily Catholic and Protestant, built churches and schools to educate and “convert” Indians. This was done in the cause of assimilation, with most of the missionaries, lay or religious, deliberately undermining the traditional cultures. Benedictines came late to the Indian …

Hemingway And The Search For Meaning In Life, David M. Strain
Hemingway And The Search For Meaning In Life, David M. Strain
Honors Theses
It is difficult to define the precise nature of this study. Strictly speaking, it is not a literary study, for the questions which it asks and the topics which it addresses go beyond the traditional boundaries of literary criticism. Likewise, it is not a philosophical study, for it transcends that discipline as well. Neither is it an eclectic combination of the two. This paper is a part of a deeply personal self-examination which I have undergone over the last three years. As I have tried to determine the ways in which Hemingway characters find meaning in life, I have also …
