A Theory Of The Perception Of Character, Donna C. Brown
A Theory Of The Perception Of Character, Donna C. Brown
Dissertations and Theses
In this thesis, the critical term "character" is defined from a reader's perspective as a process involving three elements: (1) syntactical character, the printed words that delimit character in the order in which they occur; (2) spatial character, these printed words organized in the reader's mind into a pattern. These two together are called grammatical character; and (3) a mental image that results from reading these printed words.
Fifteen English Novels: An Annotated Bibliography, Robin Pounders
Fifteen English Novels: An Annotated Bibliography, Robin Pounders
Honors Theses
Although novels hold a secure, unquestioned place in twentieth century culture, they have not always claimed such a position. The novel, as everything else, had to have its beginning sometime, and, for this genre, that 'sometime' was the eighteenth century.
Called for by a greater literacy rate and the increasing leisure time of a society which fostered few forms of public entertainment, the novel began as an experiment. It was conceived in the minds of imaginative artists, was tested on paper, then evaluated and revised. Variables were constantly being brought into play, modified, or enlarge, while 'tried and true' became …

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance
You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
James Baldwin, like innumerable other Black artists, has found that in his efforts to express the plight of the Black man in America, he has been forced to deal over and over again with that inescapable dilemma of the Black American - the lack of a sense of a positive self-identity. Time after time in his writings he has shown an awareness of the fact that identity contains, as Erik Erikson so accurately indicates, "a complementarity of past and future both in the individual and in society." Baldwin wrote in "Many Thousands Gone," "We cannot escape our origins, however hard …

The Thomas Hughes Free Public Library, Rugby, Tennessee: A History And Partial Bibliography, Douglas Kirke Gordon
The Thomas Hughes Free Public Library, Rugby, Tennessee: A History And Partial Bibliography, Douglas Kirke Gordon
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to reconstruct from the documents, correspondence, and newspapers of the Rugby Papers the history of the Thomas Hughes Free Public Library from 1880 to 1895; second, to provide a systematic bibliography of the Prose Fiction, Section A, and Poetry, Section F, volumes which make up nearly one third of the holdings of the library.
Despite its importance for understanding the Rugby Colony of Thomas Hughes, the Hughes Public Library has never been adequately described. Most assessments of the library have been obscured by unfounded assumptions and brief but unscholarly statements. In October …
Contemporary Militant Black Humor, Daryl Cumber Dance
Contemporary Militant Black Humor, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
Witnessing the continued plight of their black brothers in America, noting the continued strength of racism in this country, and discouraged by the slowness and ineffectiveness of integration, they have become frustrated and completely disillusioned with the promise of American democracy. If Paul Laurence Dunbar might be said to reflect in some of his works the accommodationist views of the leading black spokesman of his times, Booker T. Washington; and if Langston Hughes might generally be viewed as advocating the thoughtful, rational methods of Martin Luther King and the N.A.A.C.P. with their disciplined social protest and their optimistic faith in …

Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark
Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The subject of money is important in the fiction of Willa Cather. She discusses it frequently and often at great length. In some works it is a major theme.
Despite its importance, a number of Willa Cather's critics have ignored the subject or have given it only cursory mention. Several ·writers, however, have discussed the subject at length. John H. Randall, III, in particular, analyzes it in great detail.· His analysis, however, goes astray at several key points.
This thesis shows that Willa Cather's attitudes toward money were balanced, humane, and consistent. These attitudes can be summarized as follows: (a) …
The Emblem Of Print: Manifestations Of An Aesthetic Of Print In The The Spectator, Ferdinand Alexi Hilenski Ii
The Emblem Of Print: Manifestations Of An Aesthetic Of Print In The The Spectator, Ferdinand Alexi Hilenski Ii
Doctoral Dissertations
Marshall McLuhan has disclosed several characteristics of the medium of print pertaining to the ability of print to render reality, among these being linearity, uniformity and infinite repeatability, all indicative of the visual senses. In the Spectator by Addison and Steele this aesthetic of print is particularly visible, in content, form, persona and style. Indeed, the aesthetic of print so pervades the work that it might be said to compose an emblem of print. As such to work is particularly valuable to the twentieth century, when the particular values of a world rendered in terms of print are in danger …
The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet
The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Nonsense literature and nonsense poetry have provided release from the shackles of logic for centuries. But the greatest masters of English nonsense are Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Carroll gives, in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, the principles underlying a carefully-built structure. In Lewis Carroll's nonsense world, the creatures break the determinism of meaning and significance.
Nonsense can be defined by the following characteristics: a strong adherence to the concrete in every way possible in order to allow the intellect to be in complete control of its material and thus prevent reference; the elaboration of a pseudo-logic based …
"Presentational Immediacy" In The Poetry Of James Dickey, Lethiel C. Parson
"Presentational Immediacy" In The Poetry Of James Dickey, Lethiel C. Parson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The thesis explores the "presentational immediacy" of the poetry of James Dickey. "Presentational immediacy" is a phrase used by the poet, himself, to describe his attempt to provide a verbal equivalent of an intense experience. He also defines the phrase in stating that his aim is to effect spontaneity and reader involvement in the experience of the poems. This is a relatively difficult objective to accomplish. However, as is shown in the study of the poems in Chapter V, Dickey's handling of the general diction and imagery of the poems does fulfill his objective of presenting an experience in a …

The Moral Of Ulysses, Charles Carlyle Cosby
The Moral Of Ulysses, Charles Carlyle Cosby
Master's Theses
Many critics are confused about the total meaning of James Joyce's Ulysses. David Daiches in The Novel and the Modern World states that "critics can acclaim the style, the organisation, the complexity, the insight, the ingenuity, and many other separate aspects of the work, but what are they to say of the whole?" Daiches is obviously among those critics who pass Ulysses off as art for art 's sake. On the other hand, William M. Schutte points out that critics who have a good deal to say about Ulysses as a whole are unfortunately saying the wrong things. These critics …
