The Old Testament As Scripture Of The Church, Brevard S. Childs
The Old Testament As Scripture Of The Church, Brevard S. Childs
Concordia Theological Monthly
The author argues that the historical-critical approach to the Scripture leads to unedifying results when the practitioner fails to treat Scripture as the Book of the church, containing the record of God's unique revelation. He argues that the history of the canon has been neglected and that canonical history gives the key to understanding the nature of Scripture as the Book of the church. He concentrates on the canonical shape of the Pentateuch. Although Dr. Childs endorses the major results of the historical-critical approach to the Old Testament, he argues that the historical-critical method is neither the perfect nor the …

Lutheran Conditions For Communion In Holy Things, Robert W. Jenson

“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher
“The Log In Your Own Eye.", Paul G. Bretscher
Concordia Theological Monthly
It is painful for me to write what I am about to write-about the log in the eye of my own church. I am not blind to some of the specks or even logs which concern many of my brothers. Every confusion and diffusion and diminution of the Gospel deeply disturbs me. But our first concern has to be the log in the eye of those among us who assume they are qualified to do eye surgery on their brothers. The Lord's judgment has a strange way of beginning at Jerusalem.

Wisdom And Law In Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer
Wisdom And Law In Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer
Concordia Theological Monthly
In this article the author shows how the Jewish understanding of wisdom and law changed, especially in the intertestamental period. Wisdom, under the influence of Hellenistic thought, became almost a personal mediator between God and man, although it had originally been used to describe a certain style of living. The word "law" also underwent a change from its first meaning of guidance, to a later meaning in Deuteronomy of "the revelation of Yahweh's will to Israel," to the final identification of law with wisdom as the mediator between God and His creation, including especially man.

Critical Methodology And The Lutheran Symbols' Treatment Of The Genesis Creation Accounts, Horace D. Hummel

We must begin by specifying what lexicon we are using. What “critical methodology” in the first place? "Critical" is, no doubt, the usual shorthand for what is commonly labelled "the historical-critical method."

Luther On Christ And The Old Testament, James S. Preus

Parables In The Gospel Of Thomas, William R. Schoedel
Parables In The Gospel Of Thomas, William R. Schoedel
Concordia Theological Monthly
Dr. Schoedel provides important light on a burning contemporary question concerning the authority of the Scripture. He does this by studying the attitude of an important early group of Christians to the sayings of Jesus. He concludes that the Gnostic Christians who produced the Gospel of Thomas did not hesitate to edit and change the sayings of Jesus to suit their own theological viewpoints.

Synodical Address-1848, C. F. Walther
Concordia Theological Monthly
(The 1848 Synodical Address of C. F. Walther, which is presented here in translation, clearly sets forth his views on the relationship between the congregations and The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Dr. Walther's views were repeated almost verbatim in a "Brother to Brother" (Mein theurer Herr Amtsbruder} letter of Jan. 12, 1875, in which he assured the congregations of their freedom to accept or reject synodical resolutions, and then pleaded with them to "freely" accept a synodical resolution that called for a building fund collection for new construction at three synodical schools.
