A Discussion And Modern Edition Of Some Works From Walter Porter's Madrigales And Ayres (1632), Linda Dobbs Jones

Masters Theses

Walter Porter (1588 or 1595-1659) was an important composer as the dawn of the Baroque broke over England. A small amount of scholarly work concerning his life and music has already been done. Five pieces from Porter's Madrigales and Ayres (1632) have been published in modern transcriptions. The supplement to this thesis contains modern transcriptions of three additional works from Madrigales and Ayres.

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss at length and in detail some of the works in Madrigales and Ayres. Five selections--the three in the thesis supplement and two edited by Ian Spink--provide a broad representative …

The Aesthetic Of The Aveant-Garde In Music And Its Reflection By Some Works In Source: Music Of The Avant-Garde, Dennis Earle Jones

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the aesthetic within which avant-garde musicians are composing and show the reflection of this aesthetic in selected avant-garde works. Writings by and about avant-garde composers and about their works were collected and collated. Writings about the avant-garde in artistic disciplines other than music were also examined. From these writings was distilled, in the first chapter of the thesis, an elucidation and summarization of the aesthetic of the avant-garde in music.

Various compositions printed in Source: Music of the Avant-Garde were selected for examination. In the second chapter, exegeses of the works …

The Justification Of Jehan Petit: A Fifteenth-Century Attempt To Justify Tyrannicide, John C. Parsons Aug 1970

The Justification Of Jehan Petit: A Fifteenth-Century Attempt To Justify Tyrannicide, John C. Parsons

Masters Theses

The Justification of Jehan Petit was composed as an attempt to explain the murder in 1407 of Louis, duke of Orleans, by his cousin John the Fearless, duke of Burgundy. The murder was politically necessary for John to be able to dominate the French government while the king, Charles VI, was mad.

Petit attempted to prove that the duke of Orleans had been a tyrant, and that the murder was justifiable as tyrannicide. The validity of Petit’s theory demanded that he be able to prove Louis' tyranny. In so doing, he departed radically from the medieval concept of a tyrant …

A Comparison Of The Heroines In Three Representative Novels Of Concha Espina, Barbara Harris Dennis

Masters Theses

It has been the intent of this study to present a closely referenced comparison of the heroines of three representative novels by Concha Espina.

Through the use of developmental analyses and plot summaries of La esfinge maragata, El metal de los muertos and El Caliz rojo it has been possible to obtain a valid assessment of the similarities and contrasts found in the respective protagonists. In spite of the obvious differences in environmental, social and circumstantial elements, the three women evidence essentially the same basic personality traits, attitudes and reactions.

The personal tragedy in the lives of the three women …

The Essential Unity Of Whitman's Leaves Of Grass, 1855: The Personality Projected, Jan Bryan Lawson Jun 1970

The Essential Unity Of Whitman's Leaves Of Grass, 1855: The Personality Projected, Jan Bryan Lawson

Masters Theses

The thesis of this paper is that the essential unity of Whitman's Leaves of Grass, 1855 derives from the personality projected.

Up to the present, critics have failed to agree on any single principle of unity in the first poem of Leaves of Grass, 1855, or in the book as a whole. Yet Whitman himself indicated on various occasions over a long span of years that the projection of a personality was his intent. Further, he indicated that this personality could then be utilized for various purposes, most notably he could exploit it to "promulge" his philosophy.

The …
