Close Communion, Stephen Bartelt Nov 1970

Close Communion, Stephen Bartelt

Master of Divinity Thesis

The scope of-this study, rather, is to see where the Lutheran church has stood on the practice, as well as its reasons for standing where it has. Within these limits, furthermore, no claim is laid to the comprehensiveness of the treatment. The material presented is selective. The excursion into the practice of the early church was included for two reasons. First, the study Eucharist and Church Fellowship in the First Four Centuries by Werner Elert indicates that the practice of closed communion was maintained in the early church for some of the same reasons it was practiced among Lutherans. Secondly, …

An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke Nov 1970

An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the many problems faced by the people living in town and country communities. By citing various authorities on the rural church, I will demonstrate how these problems also affect the church in town and country.

Secondly, I will discuss the need of a more specialized training for ministerial candidates for the town and country ministry. My research for this section included a study of the placement of ministerial candidates of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod between 1962 and 1967 by Allen Nauss. I also studied the placement of the 1970 …

[Mythoi (Romanized Form)] And [Genealogiai (Romanized Form)] In The Pastoral Epistles : A Reappraisal, Dale Banke Nov 1970

[Mythoi (Romanized Form)] And [Genealogiai (Romanized Form)] In The Pastoral Epistles : A Reappraisal, Dale Banke

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is a tentative reappraisal of the nature of the μυ̑θοι and δενεαλοδίαι as these reflect a portion of the heresy combatted in the Pastorals. It is not intended to be an investigation of the entire heresy, much less the complete gamut of exhortation which the Epistles contain. This might appear to pose a false separation, since the wider contexts of the passages that include mention of the μυ̑θοι and δενεαλοδίαι seem to draw in much of the polemic and even some of the advice concerning early church order contained in these letters. Nonetheless, only those aspects of the …

The Cluniac Reform, 910-1157, With Special Emphasis On The Development Of The Cluniac Order, Wallace Behrhorst Nov 1970

The Cluniac Reform, 910-1157, With Special Emphasis On The Development Of The Cluniac Order, Wallace Behrhorst

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to give the history of the development of the monastery of Cluny with special emphasis on the development of the Cluniacs as an Order. For that reason .the paper will not cover the entire fie1d of Cluniac history and influence. To give a complete study of the topic would involve a study of fields beyond the scope and purpose of the present work. The author would propose other phases that would prove quite fruitful for further work.

Factors Affecting Frequency Of Celebration And Reception Of The Eucharist In Twentieth Century Non-Roman Churches And Religious Communities, Paul Clarence Dorn Sep 1970

Factors Affecting Frequency Of Celebration And Reception Of The Eucharist In Twentieth Century Non-Roman Churches And Religious Communities, Paul Clarence Dorn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The study traces the practice of the Christian. church from the time of the New Testament to the present day in re1ation to the matter of frequency of reception and celebration. The assumption is that a study of earlier eucharistic practices will give a better perspective to the study of present-day churches and religious communities.

Israel And The Nations: The Mission Motif In The Old Testament With Reference To The Yahwistic Passages Of The Pentateuch, To Deutero-Isaiah And To The Book Of Jonah, Arockiam Rajaian Aug 1970

Israel And The Nations: The Mission Motif In The Old Testament With Reference To The Yahwistic Passages Of The Pentateuch, To Deutero-Isaiah And To The Book Of Jonah, Arockiam Rajaian

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The object of this study is to investigate the mission motif in the life and thought of the people of Israel in three different periods in the nation's history, namely, the early monarchical period, the exilic period, and the post-exilic period. The inquiry seeks to determine whether or not Israel had a mission to the gentile nations during the Old Testament period, the nature of that mission, and the ways in which that mission was to be carried out. An attempt will also be made to discern the difference in emphasis in the three different periods and how the situations …

Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong Aug 1970

Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The eschatology of 2 Thess. 2:1-12 has been a perennial problem for biblical interpreters. The language of the chapter is very different from that which Paul uses in his other epistles. He exhorts the Thessalonians not to be excited about the coming of the day of the Lord, "for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed …" (verse 3). When the appears, he will exalt himself "against every so-called god or object of worship, so that be takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God" …

The Diakonis Function Of The Church In Hong Kong, Manfred Helmuth Berndt Jul 1970

The Diakonis Function Of The Church In Hong Kong, Manfred Helmuth Berndt

The burden of the study was an attempt to answer the general question of the church's servant attitude by answering specific questions, within the limited framework of one methodology.

Stephen's Speech Missiological Implications Of Stephen's Speech In Luke-Acts, Hyo-Jong Kim May 1970

Stephen's Speech Missiological Implications Of Stephen's Speech In Luke-Acts, Hyo-Jong Kim

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Stephen's speech leaves us with many questions. Our study will help to answer some of these questions. Chapter One of this study deals with some background issues, i.e., Who Stephen is among the Seven Deacons, and Who the Hellenists are, whose complaint threatened the unity and harmony of the church in Jerusalem. Chapter Two seeks to determine how the reporting of speech in ancient literature is to be understood. This is an attempt to defend the authenticity, and thus, the reliability of the ancient records of various speeches. The third chapter, the main body of the work, handles the issues …

Dr. Adolph A. Brux And Prayer Fellowship In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, John Marschhausen May 1970

Dr. Adolph A. Brux And Prayer Fellowship In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, John Marschhausen

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper is to explore the case of Dr.Adolph A. Brux and his relations with The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod on the subject of prayer fellowship, and in doing that to discover what effect, if any, the work of Dr.Brux had upon the Missouri Synod. F. Dean Lueking, in his book, Mission in the Making, terms the period between 1920and 1940 "The Struggle for Vision" within Missouri. It is in this period that the case between Dr. Brux and the Missouri Synod took place, and it is during this time that one can begin to see the shift …

The Understandings Of Pornography In The Behavioral Sciences And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Paul Metzler May 1970

The Understandings Of Pornography In The Behavioral Sciences And The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, Paul Metzler

Master of Divinity Thesis

Some further comments about the intent of this study should help clarify what I am attempting to do. I do not plan to develop a universally valid definition of pornography. My research has led me to see definition itself as one of the issues: In Chapter II where I have presented my findings from the behavorial sciences, I have indicated the attempts of various studies to develop just such a definition. Their variety and differing emphases show that one of the difficulties of dealing adequately with the phenomenon of pornography is determining what qualifies or does not qualify for that …

A Prolegomenon To New Testament Language In Light Of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: A Look At Paul's Meaning And Use Of Theological Language In I Corinthians 2:6-16, John Stern May 1970

A Prolegomenon To New Testament Language In Light Of Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: A Look At Paul's Meaning And Use Of Theological Language In I Corinthians 2:6-16, John Stern

Master of Divinity Thesis

This, then, is the purpose of this study: to look more closely at what scholars in many fields have had to say regarding the matter of human language and its ability to make religious assertions. In an attempt to define this purpose more accurately, it will be necessary to: (a) examine the field of contemporary Linguistic Analysis in light of its historical setting;(b) describe the relationship between the phenomenology of language and religious language; (c) consider the work being done presently in the area of modern linguistic studies in biblical research and see its effect upon the formation of theological …

The Scriptural And Confessional Stance Of American Lutheranism 1742-1867, Arthur Gillespie May 1970

The Scriptural And Confessional Stance Of American Lutheranism 1742-1867, Arthur Gillespie

Master of Divinity Thesis

What kind of things did our American Lutheran forefathers say about the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions? This was the initial question behind the research in this paper. How did they express what they believed about the documents? There are quite a few words that surround our expressions of fidelity to the Bible and the Confessions. We are continually in dialogue about what we are really saying when we use them. Are they adequate for our intentions? Should we retire some of them? By means of this paper we hope to discover what was said and what was meant by …

A Christian Concept Of Anthropology Derived From The Johannine Literature, Alan Lester Wyatt Sr. May 1970

A Christian Concept Of Anthropology Derived From The Johannine Literature, Alan Lester Wyatt Sr.

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem that has been attempted to be resolved by this research was the primary evaluation of the contents of the Johannine literature in order to ascertain its teaching on anthropology with limited reference to the Westminster Confession of Faith and Herman Dooyeweerd's A New Critique of Theoretical Thought.

It was hoped that the Johannine problem would shed light on the most significant problem confronting modern contemplative and speculative philosophical thought which is: ''What is the nature of man ?" Indeed, from the earliest writing of man to the present day, reflections of serious thinkers have filled volumes in an …

The Doctrine Of Man In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies, Howard W. Kramer May 1970

The Doctrine Of Man In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies, Howard W. Kramer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Since Lord of the Flies is so frequently found on the required reading list of English literature courses, it is to be expected that the theme of the novel is the subject of frequent discussions in literary circles and perhaps even in gatherings of much less sophisticated readers. One would, then, be inclined to examine seriously the theme of a novel as widely read and discussed as is Lord of the Flies. Since the theme of the novel involves so fundamental a concept as the doctrine of man, one may surmise that the average reader finds an unusual attraction in …

An Exegetical Study Of Romans 16:17-20 In Light Of Its Use In The Missouri Synod During The Last Thirty Years For The Question Of Fellowship, Roger P. Frobe May 1970

An Exegetical Study Of Romans 16:17-20 In Light Of Its Use In The Missouri Synod During The Last Thirty Years For The Question Of Fellowship, Roger P. Frobe

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is designed to investigate the use to which Rom. 16:17-20 has been put in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, particularly within the last thirty years. At the same time this dissertation offers an objective and independent interpretation of that pericope. The purpose of the study is not merely to add one more interpretation of Rom. 16:17-20. Instead, it is an attempt to examine the passage in light of its use in the Missouri Synod in the past. Simply stated our intent has been to provide a setting for the proper use of Rom. 16:17-20 in contemporary American discussions on …

Community Discipline: Saint Paul And Qumran: An Exegetical Study Of Paul's Principles Of Church Discipline Based On An Investigation Of Qumran And Such Pauline Materials As Relate To First Corinthians 5:1-5, Harold Louis Kitzmann May 1970

Community Discipline: Saint Paul And Qumran: An Exegetical Study Of Paul's Principles Of Church Discipline Based On An Investigation Of Qumran And Such Pauline Materials As Relate To First Corinthians 5:1-5, Harold Louis Kitzmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Discipline problems arose early in the church. A case of flagrant immorality at Corinth prompted Pau1 to counsel the congregation there to meet in solemn assembly and to “excommunicate” the offender. The purpose of this study is to examine the subject of discipline as treated in Paul’s letters, particularly the instance related in 1 Cor. 5:1-5, against the background of Qumran. It is an attempt to establish the New Testament principles governing the church in its internal relations as the fellowship or community of God's "called out people" as compared with practices described in the Dead Sea Scrolls. On the …

The Lectionary And The Church Year: A Study Of The Historic Lectionary Of The Western Church Leading To A Revised Gospel Lectionary, Karl Cron May 1970

The Lectionary And The Church Year: A Study Of The Historic Lectionary Of The Western Church Leading To A Revised Gospel Lectionary, Karl Cron

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The goal of the study is to provide a modest starting point for a revised lectionary with understandable, meaningful and relevant lessons that relate to one another and that are organized in a church year pattern which is helpful to the worshiper's devotion. Of course, the lectionary itself cannot overcome the human factors of inattentiveness, lethargy, and disinterest. More than a lectionary is required to overcome these factors.

A Critical Evaluation Of The Ahmadiyya Muslim Doctrine Of God In The Light Of The Trinity, Henry John Otten May 1970

A Critical Evaluation Of The Ahmadiyya Muslim Doctrine Of God In The Light Of The Trinity, Henry John Otten

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this study special emphasis is given to the Ahmadiyya Muslim doctrine of God. The Ahmadiyya movement in Islam takes its name from the founder of the movement, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who lived in Qadian, Punjab, India, from 1835-1908. Organized in 1889, the movement has expanded under the leadership of his successors with present headquarters in Rabwah, Pakistan. Its influence has been out of proportion to its membership of less than 3001000 members. The Ahmadiyyas maintain an extensive outreach program which now has centers in more than forty different countries of Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, including a number …

The Fear Of God As Ethical Motivation In Pauline Theology, Walter A. Maier May 1970

The Fear Of God As Ethical Motivation In Pauline Theology, Walter A. Maier

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The present writer has long been interested in the study of Pauline instruction concerning motivation for sanctification. In 1967 he presented to the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, a Master of Sacred Theology thesis on the subject of the fourth of the abovementioned motivations for ethical living, namely, faith in the fact of the Christian's union with Christ and personal participation with Him in his death and resurrection. The opportunity to enter upon a concentrated study of what Paul has to say, in particular, about the sanctifying fear of God presented itself in the same year, when the writer …

Movements In The Church Of England As Reflected In English Prose Fiction Of The Eighteenth Century, William H. Traugott May 1970

Movements In The Church Of England As Reflected In English Prose Fiction Of The Eighteenth Century, William H. Traugott

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The eighteenth century, known as the Age of Reason in England, saw the effect of intellectual pursuits in the Church of England. Yet, prose fiction presented Anglicanism in an overtly active, working form rather than in a rational system of theologically-oriented statements about Christian teachings. The didacticism of the century's fiction was conducive to reflecting such an image. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate this prose fiction in terms of movements within the Church.

The Christian Century As A Spokesman For Liberal Protestantism In The Early Depression Years, 1929-1933, David Mccall May 1970

The Christian Century As A Spokesman For Liberal Protestantism In The Early Depression Years, 1929-1933, David Mccall

Bachelor of Divinity

The social gospel for which the Century-spoke led it to just such active involvement. It brought its Christian commitment to bear on every important facet of American life. These facets fall into three broad classifications. They are social issues, economic issues and political issues. Attention will be focused on these to determine just how the Christian Century put its creed into practice.

A History Of The National Evangelical Lutheran Church To Merger With The Lutheran Church - -Missouri Synod, Harold Austermann May 1970

A History Of The National Evangelical Lutheran Church To Merger With The Lutheran Church - -Missouri Synod, Harold Austermann

Bachelor of Divinity

In chapter II, I will give an historical survey of the Finnish emigration to the United States, and the resultant formation and growth of both the Suomi Synod and the Apostolic Lutherans or Laestadians, as a prelude to the formation of the National Evangelical Lutheran Church. In chapter III, I will trace the history of the National Evangelical Lutheran Church to 1956. In chapter IV, I will cover the actual merger process to completion in January of 1964.

The Vine Of God : A Study In Discipleship According To John 15:1-16, Paul Robert Biegner May 1970

The Vine Of God : A Study In Discipleship According To John 15:1-16, Paul Robert Biegner

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is intended to be a study into the Biblical idea of the Vine of God as a word picture describing God’s people in both the Old and New Testaments. Specifically, the problem this investigation hopes to shed light upon.is this: in the light of God's dealings with His Old Testament Vine, what distinctive accents and emphases does the Vine-branches Analogy give to personal discipleship with God through Christ, the True Vine?

The Correlation Of Selected Malady Concepts Of Psychotherapy With Their Theological Counterparts, As Evidenced In The Pastoral Counseling Literature Of 1945-1957, Robert E. Rediehs May 1970

The Correlation Of Selected Malady Concepts Of Psychotherapy With Their Theological Counterparts, As Evidenced In The Pastoral Counseling Literature Of 1945-1957, Robert E. Rediehs

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The basic concern of this paper is whether or not psychotherapy and theology have anything to do with each other. There is much feeling in Christian tradition about the extent to which extra-theological studies relate to theology. The present paper will not deal with the efforts which have been made to point out a dissimilarity between these fields. Rather it hypothesizes that psychotherapy and theology are, in some sense, related, and that this can be demonstrated in the terminology and meanings of pastoral counseling.

The Doctrine Of The Church In American Presbyterian Theology In The Mid-Nineteeth Century, David Clyde Jones May 1970

The Doctrine Of The Church In American Presbyterian Theology In The Mid-Nineteeth Century, David Clyde Jones

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

There is considerable unity in the principle with respect to the essential nature of the church, a unity which the theological leaders see as grounded in evangelical theology. However, even with the evangelical principle, perhaps because of it, some differences appear with respect to the church. The main purpose of the writer of this paper is to investigate the roots of those differences. One major problem discovered is a too great reliance on the distinction between the visible church and the invisible church.

The Introduction Of Asian History Into Utah High Schools, Carol M. Hinckley May 1970

The Introduction Of Asian History Into Utah High Schools, Carol M. Hinckley

Theses and Dissertations

Asian history is increasingly recognized by experts as a necessary part of a high school student's world history experience. Asia is important for them to study because of its great intrinsic value and because of Asia's relationship with the United States in the future. To date, however, in Utah there are no separate Asian history courses being taught and few teachers include Asia as an important part of the world history course.

Schools in other parts of the nation have instituted practical Asian history courses and Utah can follow their example. Teachers should consider how much time can be devoted …

A Sociological Analysis Of The Communiunity Immediately Surrounding Our Savior Lutheran Church, St. Louis, Missouri, Kenneth Haupt Mar 1970

A Sociological Analysis Of The Communiunity Immediately Surrounding Our Savior Lutheran Church, St. Louis, Missouri, Kenneth Haupt

Master of Divinity Thesis

The scope of this study must include three parts. Firstly, a careful analysis of the community surrounding Our Savior Lutheran Church must be made. Such an analysis ought to delineate the geographical information as well as the needs and the resources of the community. Secondly, an analysis of Our Savior Congregation is important, dealing mainly with the congregation’s understanding of, its willingness to, and its ability for ministry in this community. Thirdly, a study of theological education is necessary in order to ascertain curricular models which are capable of fulfilling functions commensurate to the objectives of Concordia Seminary as well …

An Investigation Of The Origin And Development Of The "Gesellschaft Zur Unterstutzung Von Prediger- U. Schullehrer- Wittwen U. Waisen Innerhalb Der Ev. Luth. Synode Von Missouri, Ohio U. A. Staaten", Erwin Lueker

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the origin and development of this organization within Synod as a whole from the proposal for such an organization in 1850 up until 1889, when the various districts officially took over the support of the widows and orphans of Pastors and teachers.
