The Mariale Of Saint-Evroul, Agustin Pedrosa
The Mariale Of Saint-Evroul, Agustin Pedrosa
Marian Library Studies
The collection of sermons called the Mariale of Saint Evroul was studied for a doctoral thesis presented to the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) by Father Agustin Pedrosa in 1958.
In his article "El Marial de Saint-Evroul" published in Ephemerides Mariologicae Father Pedrosa dates the collection between 1141/1159 and 1200 and provides a critical edition of two of the 13 sermons.
To help complete this edition, we are publishing here the beginning of the collection: the prologue and the first two sermons; other parts will be published in future issues of Marian Library Studies.

The late Dom Frenaud has provided us in Cahiers Marials, 1966, with a list of the teachings of Pope Paul VI on marian doctrine and devotion from the beginning of his ponificate in June, 1963, to February 19, 1966 (letter to the Polish Episcopate). This documentation for 1966 has recently been completed by Fr. Th. Koehler, S. M. (Cahiers Marials, 1970). The present article both recapitulates and supplements the original French publications and then brings the list forward to the end of 1967. To prepare the English edition, the periodical The Pope Speaks was used extensively, in …

We find evidence of Portugal's devotion to Mary at the very beginning of her history. Soon after he became the first king of Portugal in 1139, Alphonsus I placed his kingdom under Mary's protection. In liturgical cult the Assumption held a place of singular honor. All of the cathedrals and some 150 parish churches are dedicated to our Lady under that title. Devotion to the Immaculate Conception was a later development. Father Ambrosio da Pina presents some excellent documentation whereby we can trace the origins of this feast in Portugal down to the beginnings of the 13th century.

The Christian expansion to the east coast of the Baltic Sea illustrates the diversity of the missionary movement in the Middle Ages. In some instances this religious expansion mingled with political expansions, for example in the Byzantine, Carolingian and Germanic kingdoms.
Livonia (modern Latvia), the subject of the following article, received the Christian faith first through the Byzantine Church during the "period of Kiev" (which ended with the Mongol invasion c. 1240). In the 12th century, from the west, came the Augustinian canon Meinhard of Segeberg who evangelized the area, centering on Üxeküll from about 1180 on. After him, Albert, …
