An Historical Study Of The Solo Concerto Cadenza, Toni Christine Rydman Aug 1968

An Historical Study Of The Solo Concerto Cadenza, Toni Christine Rydman

All Master's Theses

The study of the solo concerto cadenza is one that encompasses the areas of performance, history and theory. Even though the cadenza occupies a small place in the total music literature, it is a sort of microcosm of music. It would be impossible to make a study of the cadenza without completely understanding the concerto and related forms of music. An historical study such as this can lead to deeper understanding of the music to be performed.

Religious Music Among The Jews, Walter E. Buszin Jul 1968

Religious Music Among The Jews, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Where were you ... when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" With these words God challenged Job, who is referred to at times as the patron saint of musicians. God's words to Job serve to remind the Old Testament reader that already earlier, in prehistoric times, worship and song had been used together to glorify and extol the Creator. Ancient peoples, including Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and a veritable host of early generations of mankind, recognized that the primary function of music is to honor and worship the Deity. Africans, Asiatics, Mongolians, Europeans, …

Recital Report, Douglas C. Brenchley May 1968

Recital Report, Douglas C. Brenchley

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In selecting the compositions to be presented in this graduate recital, several important factors had to be considered. First, this candidate felt that it was very important to include a variety of music in the recital; songs and arias from different eras of history, performed in their original languages, including French, German, Italian and English. Representative composers had to be selected, allowing the candidate to sing music worthy of a graduate recital. This music also had to include those qualities which would tax the candidate's ability as an educator and performer; rhythm, style, range, interpretation and technique--all of these qualities …

Beethoven’S An Die Ferne Geliebte, Paul R. Piersall May 1968

Beethoven’S An Die Ferne Geliebte, Paul R. Piersall

All Master's Theses

Beethoven has often been accused of writing vocal music which exceeds some normal limitations of the voice. Such unfortunate accusations result in many singers avoiding his vocal music. Through means of historical evidence presented in this paper, through an examination of An die ferne Geliebte and its performance, the writer hopes to dispel some of this misunderstanding of Beethoven's vocal music.

A History Of The Violin Étude To About 1800 Volume I, K. Marie Stolba

Fort Hays Studies Series

The purpose of this study is to investigate and ascertain the history and development of the étude as a specific form of didactic literature for the violin. All influential factors, both non-musical and musical, are considered; in a study of this type, however, more space is devoted to the musical than to the non-musical elements. This being the case, an investigation of instructional materials for the violin comprises the major portion of this writing. The period covered is form 1523 to around 1800.

An Original Composition For Chorus Missa Brevis, Robert Austin Barbey

All Master's Theses

In the composition of this Mass the composer was faced with several alternatives in the selection of a suitable musical style. These choices were narrowed to include (1) "traditional" or "romantic"; (2) "pop"; or "jazz"; (3) "folk-mass"; or (4) avant garde. The ultimate choice was a synthesis, consisting of devices from fourteenth century music, and elements of contemporary style.

Luther The Musician, Charles L. Hill Jan 1968

Luther The Musician, Charles L. Hill

Honors Theses

The chief contributions of Martin Luther to Western civilization are in the fields of theology and religious reform; but his influence upon, and even his direct contributions to, the development of music also are of considerable importance. Luther has established a place for himself in history as "the great German religious reformer who began the Protestant Reformation" (Brit., 436), but his abilities as a musician are often overlooked. That Luther had a great love for music is clear from a letter which he sent to Ludwig Senfl, the court musician at Munich, on October 4, 1530, in which he says: …
