Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller Jul 1936

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller

Master's Theses

Who were the people making up Kansas Territory, or simply “K.T.”, as correspondence was addressed from everywhere? Coming to Kansas from New England and the Middle Atlantic states through the agency of the Emigrant Aid Company, from the Middle and Western states, from the Southern states, and from foreign countries, they had a variety of folk lore and pioneer technique they could put to work. It seems that they would constitute an extremely chaotic society when viewed from this standpoint; yet, they were all sired by progressive peoples, and, if we consider them from the viewpoint of culture and social …

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig, Paul King May 1936

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig, Paul King

Master's Theses

It was my first intention to write a biography of my grandfather. This was to be an entirely creative piece of work, based on his Army discharge, an account of his death and burial in the local paper, and the traditions of the family. Because his life after 1875-when he left the 5th Cavalry was so closely connected with the history of Hays, the biography was to stop short, twenty-three years before his death. Hays City from 1875 to 1898, the people, the colorful English colonists east in Victoria, the Russian-Germans, the change of troops at the fort, the fort …

The Literature Of Spanish South America : Its Background, Development And Characteristics, Catherine E. Lewis May 1936

The Literature Of Spanish South America : Its Background, Development And Characteristics, Catherine E. Lewis

Master's Theses

The scope of this work is to be confined to those nations on the continent of South America which use as their national tongue the Spanish language. This excludes consideration of Brazil, whose language is Portuguese and which possesses a rich literature of its own. Another country is omitted, Paraguay, not from oversight, but because this inland republic is so backward in culture and development that it possesses nothing which can be dignified with the term national literature. Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela - these are the countries of Spanish America with which this discussion will …

Immortality In Recent Philosophies, Paul Harold Kubik Apr 1936

Immortality In Recent Philosophies, Paul Harold Kubik

Master's Theses

The problem of immortality has challenged man kind from the earliest dawn of civilization.A belief in some sort of immortality has had, with but few exceptions, a universal adherence.Even modern man, having the know ledge of multitudinous contributions of preceding generations concerning immortality, continues to ponder over the problem as much as ever. Much discussion has concerned itself with a life beyond death, and the diverse beliefs ensuing indicate that the problem is truly a riddle of immense depth and complexity. It has aroused the thought or both great and small men; it has challenged their way of living, enabling them …

The Development Of Dr. Alfred North Whitehead's Philosophy, Frederick Joseph Parker Jan 1936

The Development Of Dr. Alfred North Whitehead's Philosophy, Frederick Joseph Parker

Master's Theses

Professor Whitehead is a Realist. Realism holds that some or all known objects do not depend on the mind for existence. It ls possible that objects exist without being known. Space and time, energy, matter, plant world, and values may exist independent of a mind. He is not a materialist nor an idealist. Not a materialist for he has thrown away the Newtonian physics nor an idealist for he states that minds are concrete events existing in space and time. There is much of Plato and Aristotle in his philosophy. He has also been greatly influenced by Bertrand Russell, who …
