The Military History Of East Tennessee, 1861-1865, Frank P. Smith
The Military History Of East Tennessee, 1861-1865, Frank P. Smith
Masters Theses
Campaigns of the Civil War may be place in three major divisions: the fighting in Virginia, with it attendant invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania, between the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac; the campaigns of the West, covering Kentucky, Middle and West Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas; and the trans-Mississippi struggles.
With the exception of the Chattanooga campaign, East Tennessee was not included in these larger maneuvers and battles, probably because of its topographical features and geographical location. However, there are certain facts regarding the region during the Civil War that are of interest. …
Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller
Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller
Master's Theses
Who were the people making up Kansas Territory, or simply “K.T.”, as correspondence was addressed from everywhere? Coming to Kansas from New England and the Middle Atlantic states through the agency of the Emigrant Aid Company, from the Middle and Western states, from the Southern states, and from foreign countries, they had a variety of folk lore and pioneer technique they could put to work. It seems that they would constitute an extremely chaotic society when viewed from this standpoint; yet, they were all sired by progressive peoples, and, if we consider them from the viewpoint of culture and social …
The Council Of Colonial Virginia : 1700-1750, Esther Campbell Walsh
The Council Of Colonial Virginia : 1700-1750, Esther Campbell Walsh
Honors Theses
1660 is the date conveniently accepted as marking the turn of Virginia society away from its early democratic character. After that date, colonial society became clearly stratified, and by the turn of the century had received its set firmly in the mold of aristocracy. The institution in which all the elements of aristocracy concentrated was the Governor's Council, which exhibited social, political, and economic power centered in the hands of a ruling few. The period from 1700 to 1750 is the high tide of councillor power. In the years before 1700, the steady rise of its power was interrupted by …

He was a director of business affairs of the Sisters of Charity. He also took a profound interest in educational and religious matters being associated with the Catholic Church. He was a member of the board of directors of the Co-Orperative Educational Association of this city. At …
The British-Italian-Ethiopian Dispute, Helen Dorothy Cutting
The British-Italian-Ethiopian Dispute, Helen Dorothy Cutting
Bachelors’ Theses
Early in October, 1935 Italy began a war of conquest which had been announced sometime before. The general purposes of it were known to the foreign offices for about a year. However, nothing was done by the great powers or the League of Nations to drive home to Mussolini the fact that he would be met with organized resistance. Mussolini came to the conclusion that he would be showered with resolutions of disapproval and then allowed to proceed.
True, the League did not stop the war. Instead of forbidding Mussolini to move his army to Ethiopia by closing the Suez …

The Motley Family Of Virginia : Being An Acount Of The Maternal Ancestry Of The Writer J. Motley Booker, J. Motley Booker
The Motley Family Of Virginia : Being An Acount Of The Maternal Ancestry Of The Writer J. Motley Booker, J. Motley Booker
Honors Theses
The name Motley is not a common one in America nor here in Virginia, though the progenitor of the line first settled here over two hundred and fifty years ago. A partial reason for this lies in the fact that as far as records reveal, only one of that family emigrated to America. Tradition which has been handed down to us by word of mouth, gives the family a French Huguenot extraction, and the rudimentary researches in that direction have seemed to uphold this tradition in every way.
William Taylor : Organizer And Statesman, Thomas Mee
William Taylor : Organizer And Statesman, Thomas Mee
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
To the average layman of the present day, as well as the majority of the new generation of ministers, the name of William Taylor rarely carries the deep impression that his labors justify. From the standpoint of the American Continents, this observation may have more in fact than in other parts of the world where his labors were more abundant in term of years devoted to the building of a more worthy civilization.
With a view to making more accessible the thrilling account of this truly noble Christian Statesman, much research has been made. In doing so, it is hoped …

The Miles-Crook Controversy, Katherine Shepard
The Miles-Crook Controversy, Katherine Shepard
History ETDs
The accusations and resulting explanations in the Miles-Crook newspaper encounters revolved around four questions. First, had Miles disobeyed his orders in accepting a conditional surrender. The chief difficulty here was that no one seemed able to discover just what terms or promises Miles had made to Geronimo. Second, had not General Miles and Captain Lawton received the credit for the surrender which should have been bestowed upon Lieutenant Gatewood, who with two Chiricahua scouts, sought out the hostile camp and arranged that the Indians should go to the border and give themselves up to Miles. Third, had not Miles, after …
The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura
The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The world recognizes Toyohiko Kagawa as the St. Francis of Japan. His heart is one of pure love like that of St. Francis, but his battle has not been carried on by means of the sermon in a religious denomination. With a heart of love Kagawa has stood in the streets and would save the lives of the people. This is because he was born in 20th century Japan and not in Italy of the Middle Ages.
Fifteen hundred years after the fall of ancient Rome the world once more is about to undergo a mighty change. At this time …

The Development Of Mexican Music, Edith M. K. Tibbets
The Development Of Mexican Music, Edith M. K. Tibbets
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps no country at the present time has a richer unexplored fount of folk music than has Mexico. In fact. her rich store of musical culture, like a vast mine scarcely worked entitles her to a position among those peoples whose folk music has long been firmly established.
Finding the source material on the music of Mexico for the most part, fragmentary and scattered, the writer decided to do serious research in translating from the early Spanish writers, and in reading the chronicles of the travelers of that early period, as well as the historical writings and the legendary lore …
