The Function Of The Priest And Of The Prophet In The Propatation Of Religion, Charles Ernest Davis Jan 1927

The Function Of The Priest And Of The Prophet In The Propatation Of Religion, Charles Ernest Davis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As one peers across the vistas of the past two types of holy men stand out with striking prominence and significance. The advance of religious thought and life has largely been due to the activities and contributions of these two, the priest and the prophet.

It has been the purpose of this research to seek to discover the particular functions of each of these, to show their correlation in producing religious advance, and to make certain suggestions as to how the values each has to contribute to the program of the modern Christian church may be more adequately realized.

A Study Of High School And College Grades, Ivy Bernice Wilkinson Jan 1927

A Study Of High School And College Grades, Ivy Bernice Wilkinson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The task I have set myself is one to which my interest has been led by a varied experience in high school teaching followed by several years teaching in college where our high school product is largely disposed of. In all that experience the giving of grades was a bugbear, a necessary evil apparently, and it occurred to me that if those grades had or could be made to have some value beyond the moment, sone directive or prognostic value, they might lose their 111-reputation in the minds of both pupil and teacher. With this thought in mind I interviewed …

The Drama As A Factor In Americanization, Florence Scott Van Gilder Jan 1927

The Drama As A Factor In Americanization, Florence Scott Van Gilder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The main objective before us is to determine how the drama, in its several forms, may be so utilized as to bring about and further Americanization. In attempting to make this theory clear to those who may be more or less unfamiliar with the idea, it will be necessary to consider the definition of Americanization, and to make some decision as to who may be Americanized. It will also be necessary to review, rather briefly, the origin and development of the drama, that it may be seen why drama has been elected as our medium.

There have been several difficulties …

Development Of Selected Mathematical Instruments Representing Angular, Logarithmic And Arithmetic Computation, Lillian L. Troxell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Sextant in its earliest known form consisted of divided circles and compasses with simply sights. An early Creek astronomer of the second century after Christ, Claudius Ptolemaeus, or more commonly called Ptolemy, wrote a book entitled Megale Syntaxis tes Astron- omias, also known by the Arabic title Almagest. The instrument described in this book was called the Astrolable and was used to measure the angular distance between stars. It was made of two concentric vertical circles, the largest and outer circle was about sixteen inches in diameter with graduated arc; the central ring was movable and carried the two …

American Oil Interests In Mosul, John S. Landrum Jan 1927

American Oil Interests In Mosul, John S. Landrum

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the nineteenth century the industry and capi- txl of the United States was entirely absorbed in the develop- ment of our home industries and resources. In fact, as may have been expected, we did not have nearly enough capital for this work and had to borrow from Europe.

But toward the end of the century it became apparent to thinking men that the time was not far distant when we should have a surplus of capital here, and that to employ it we would have to seek foreign fields for investment. The Spanish American War led us into the …

Intervention Of The United States In Nicaragua Since 1909, Louise Floyd Jan 1927

Intervention Of The United States In Nicaragua Since 1909, Louise Floyd

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The twentieth century is revealing a steady increase in the influence of the United States in the Caribbean region, both in politics and economic development. The arm of America has been gradually forcing out the European nations. Counting colonies and protectorates, the United States has under its supervision a greater Caribbean population than the population of the thirteen colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence. In trade the United States is the best customer of Central America and the West Indies. The region is one of the chief sources of our raw-materials imports.

The majority of the citizens …

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton Jan 1927

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In view of the fact that the greatest argument in favor of any educational test is its need, one is compelled to keep this in mind while introducing a new test and give this factor first consideration. It is safe to say that any instrumental- ity that will aid the teacher in the understanding of his pupil and his present and potential ability is needed. Truly the various intelligence, aptitude and content tests, now in ever increasing use, have justified their existence upon this foundation of pedigogical need.
