Burgess Shaffer

Burgess “Red” Peverly Shaffer (1906-1973) was born to Austin Shaffer and Stella in Somerset, PA. He had one brother, Glen, who would go on to be a minister in Westerville. Burgess came to Otterbein in 1924, and after graduation he returned home. In 1934, Burgess married Mildred Irene Stevanus. Together they had two children, Rodney and Beverly. Burgess worked as an electrician for the Pennsylvania Electric Company, and was a lay leader at the First United Methodist Church.
