Two Banks Of The River: The French Influence Of The Red River Region During The Eighteenth Century, Sara Anne Shell Dec 1982

Two Banks Of The River: The French Influence Of The Red River Region During The Eighteenth Century, Sara Anne Shell

Honors Theses

Every river has two banks, in the same way that every story is two-sided. Reserch in any subject will show this to be true, and the key to understanding a region is to explore more than one aspect of its existence, deriving a conclusion from the contradictions encountered. Depicting the influence of France in the Red River region, from 1699 to 1803, different circumstances proceed from the past of its development and peoples, into the present. The intent of this paper has been to discuss France's ambition of colonization by gold rushing, agriculture, and trade, the relations between French, Indian, …

A History Of Bronson Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan From 1829 To 1940, Carol Knauss Dec 1982

A History Of Bronson Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan From 1829 To 1940, Carol Knauss

Masters Theses

Bronson Park is a 3.6-acre tract of land in the center of downtown Kalamazoo. For over 130 years the city has used this land for a public park. The land originally was donated to the county for a school and a jail by the men who owned and platted the area. Interested citizens converted the two squares into a park which, in the following years, was improved with trees, walks, and a fountain. This park became an important meeting place for the villagers who held political rallies and celebrations there. From 1829 to 1940 both the appearance and the way …

The Anti-Alcohol City: Social, Economic, And Political Aspects Of Knoxville, Tennessee, 1870-1907, Roger Dale Posey

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if the experiences of Knoxville, Tennessee in dealing with prohibition during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were significantly different from those of the state, the South, or the nation. Knoxville was selected because of the lack of research conducted on prohibition in the city, the first of the state's large cities to close its open saloons.

Data from Knoxville newspapers between 1870 and 1907 were relied upon heavily, as well as information from the United States census, and Knoxville voter registration records and city directories. A ward-by-ward analysis of the …

Burt Brown Barker: His Role In Historic Preservation In Oregon, Mark Fredric Peterson Nov 1982

Burt Brown Barker: His Role In Historic Preservation In Oregon, Mark Fredric Peterson

Dissertations and Theses

The field of historic preservation has undergone· extreme changes in recent years. Only in the last few years have schools, businesses, and the public been interested in preserving historic sites. Prior to this involvement, historic preservation was accomplished by a few individuals and patriotic groups. Since the field is relatively new, little has been researched and written regarding the early efforts of preservation. One man who emerged as a leader in the preservation movement in Oregon, for over thirty years, was Burt Brown Barker.

This thesis, through research of the files associated with five different preservation projects, examines the role …

William Walker And The Republic Of Lower California, James E. Braun Sep 1982

William Walker And The Republic Of Lower California, James E. Braun

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Though Willam Walker has made the transition from the hottest news personality in America during the years preceding the Civil War, to a virtual unknown, he still remains a controversial figure. Perhaps, due to his tremulous ambitions arrl irrational behavior which set American Latin American relations back decades, the majority of his biographers have not been able to confine themselves to writing the history of a man's life and the impact it made. Their works have many times been polemics, assigning attributes to Walker, ranging from a cold, calculating, paradoxical tyrant whose religion was chivalry, to a political phenomenon personifying …

Capital Punishment : Public Opinion And Abolition In Great Britain During The Twentieth Century, Carol A. Ransone Aug 1982

Capital Punishment : Public Opinion And Abolition In Great Britain During The Twentieth Century, Carol A. Ransone

Master's Theses

Some form of capital punishment has been practiced for as long as there has been recorded history. Early laws were generally harsh and failed to consider the impact of crime on society. In 621 B.C. the Code of Dracon recorded the laws observed in Athens. The Code of Dracon revealed that almost all offences were punishable by death. Two centuries later a more humanitarian attitude was expressed in Greece. Plato believed in the segregation and reform of the criminal rather than his execution.

In England the death penalty for felony convictions was traced to the reign of Henry I. It …

Marion To Montgomery: A Twenty Year History Of Alabama State University, 1867-1887, Joseph Caver

Theses

Alabama State University is well known as a historically black university and for the involvement of its faculty and students during the civil rights movement. Less attention has been given to the school's remarkable origins, having begun as the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, founded by nine former slaves. These men are rightly considered the founders of Alabama State University, as they had the drive and perseverance to face the challenges posed by a racial and political culture bent on preventing the establishment of black schools and universities. It is thanks to the actions of the Marion Nine that …

Professional Baseball In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of South Texas, 1949-1961, Mark Lynn Paschall

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Professional minor league baseball has been played in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas since 1910. Early leagues had trouble gaining a foothold in this region during the years prior to the Second World War primarily because all games were played in the intense heat of the South Texas summers.

With the installation of arc-lights at many of the local ball parks, following the post World War II era, to allow teams to play their games in the cooler hours of the evening, area entrepreneurs tried once again to bring the National Pastime to the Valley. Unable to …

Organ Chorale Forms Of The Baroque Era, Suzanne A. Utley Aug 1982

Organ Chorale Forms Of The Baroque Era, Suzanne A. Utley

Honors Theses

The development of protestant chorales reflected the new goals which the reformation brought to the church service. Martin Luther, a primary leader of the Protestant Reformation, recognized that that goal of the service was to make his revelation of faith understandable to the people of Germany. The church service now became more than a sacramental act of obedience; it was a time for people to willingly proclaim the word of God. Through the singing of the chorale, the congregation took an active part in proclaiming the new faith found in the Reformation.

These sacred songs, composed by Luther and his …

The Constituency Of Coya Knutson, 1954, Gretchen Urnes Beito Aug 1982

The Constituency Of Coya Knutson, 1954, Gretchen Urnes Beito

Theses and Dissertations

Women rarely seek political office and even more rarely achieve the office they seek. Only one woman has been elected to Congress from Minnesota or its adjacent states--Coya Knutson from the rural Ninth District in 1954 and 1956. While legal barriers to women's participation in politics have been abolished, personal and institutional barriers remain. How Coya Knutson overcame these obstacles--and the penalties she paid for doing so--is the subject of this paper.

Coya Gjesdal Knutson grew to maturity on a successful North Dakota farm, where she learned the value of hard work and perseverance. After completing four years at Concordia …

The Mexicans' And Mexican-Americans' Contribution To The Development Of The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas And Its Citrus Industry, Camilo A. Martinez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The little-discussed Mexican and Mexican-American contribution to the development of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas into the great citrus producing area that it is today is exposed in general terms in this thesis. Due credit has been given to the Burgos, Tamaulipas, residents who came to the Valley during and after the Mexican Revolution in search of stability and better wages. In spite of the abuses they suffered, some of them decided to stay. Their children (now Mexican-Americans), are still contributing to the citrus industry today, although not in the strenuous way their parents did.

The Valley owes …

The William H. Sheppard African Art Collection At Hampton Institute, Richard A. Singletary Jul 1982

The William H. Sheppard African Art Collection At Hampton Institute, Richard A. Singletary

Institute for the Humanities Theses

An examination of the William H. Sheppard African Art Collection at Hampton Institute located in Hampton, Virginia, reveals one of the finest examples of African art in existence today. This exhibit hails from the Kasai region located in Zaire (the Congo) of Africa. Since African art 1s expressive power derives from the functional value of the object, attention is focused on the socio-cultural use of the art from the Kuba tribe in the Kasai region. This discussion and investigation of objects in the collection precedes the appendices which includes complete chronological, alphabetical, and typological catalogues.

The Historical-Critical Method- Dividing Wall Between Moderates And Conservatives In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Controversy, Jose Fuliga Jun 1982

The Historical-Critical Method- Dividing Wall Between Moderates And Conservatives In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Controversy, Jose Fuliga

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

There are, without question, theological and non-theological differences between the Moderates and Conservatives which are not directly related to the former's use of historical criticism. The role politics has played in the controversy cannot be denied. The differences regarding the practice of unionism, ecumenism, close communion, church polity, and even Synodical policies toward foreign missions have been controverted issues. But the focus of this study will be confined to verifying whether the use of historical criticism is indeed the dividing wall, between Moderates and Conservatives. This research shall furthermore probe if the Moderates' hermeneutical presupposition -- the Law-Gospel reductionism restrains …

Long Man, Small Island : The Reluctant Student Missionaries Of Majuro, Lynn Neumann Jun 1982

Long Man, Small Island : The Reluctant Student Missionaries Of Majuro, Lynn Neumann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problems and satisfactions a writer finds in narrative writing can best be understood through the production and examination of a sustained narrative. Long Man, Small Island takes non-fictive events and characters and imposes an order upon them to abstract what one of the characters sees as significant in the events, and so makes a statement about the student mission experience and an emerging nation. The preface examines the scholarly aspects of creative writing, the genesis of the story, and the process and difficulties that emerged in the writing of this non-fictional narrative.

Orestes And Redemption In Two Different Ages, Kevin Lantry Jun 1982

Orestes And Redemption In Two Different Ages, Kevin Lantry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the attempt to ascertain man's changes in world view, the Orestes stories of the Greek tragedians were compared with the Orestes stories of six 20th-century playwrights. The Orestes plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides were contrasted with the similar plays of Hofmannstahl, Jeffers, O'Neill, Giraudoux, Eliot, and Sartre. The Greek tragedians appear to terminate Orestes' retribution for inherited evil and a just crime by an actual, total, restorative redemption, divinely instigated. The 20th century playwrights portray only the potential termination of Orestes' retribution in a distant future, by means of a salvation that is self-instigated, costly, and completely non-restorative. …

Thou Shalt Not Kill?, Steve T. Pawluk Jun 1982

Thou Shalt Not Kill?, Steve T. Pawluk

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Very little has been said about the homicide law of the Decalogue. Upon reading the sixth commandment, it is often assumed that the prohibition of killing is absolute. If this is so, then serious problems are raised, not only for an act of killing itself, but also for things like self-defense, punishment by death, abortion, and suicide.

It is the purpose of this paper to deal in the following manner with the issue of killing: The first task is to begin with the obvious starting point, the sixth commandment itself. After noting the language used, as well as Hebrew expressions …
