Weinen, Hagen [I.E. Klagen] Organ Transcription By Franz Liszt Arranged For Band, Richard Wayne Guidry
Weinen, Hagen [I.E. Klagen] Organ Transcription By Franz Liszt Arranged For Band, Richard Wayne Guidry
Music ETDs
Written for the piano in 1862, "Weiner Hagen" variations were transcribed in 1863 for organ by Franz Liszt. The transcription is really a large fantasia in the key of F minor that consists of groups of variations, all of which are based on two closely related themes. This arrangement for symphonic band was written for the intended use of any university or good high school level organization. There are many exposed solos and other sections and in various places, extreme ranges of instruments are realized. The arrangement imitates the sound achieved by a large church organ and this fact must …
The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills
The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills
Honors Theses
"the Suffolk Campaign: A Case Study," covers the Civil War that began on April 11, 1863 and ended on May 3, 1863 and centered around the small Tidewater Virginia town of Suffolk. Suffolk's strategic prominence was derived from its access to the James River, through tributary (the Nansemond), and two major railroads which ran through the town--the Petersburg and Norfolk, and the Roanoke and Seaboard. The Confederates abandoned the town after McClellan's Peninsula Campaign made their position their untenable. Federal troops quickly entered Suffolk and established it as the first line of defense for Norfolk. Suffolk came under the military …
Notes On Viewfinding, Anna Lynn Grimes
Notes On Viewfinding, Anna Lynn Grimes
Art & Art History ETDs
My mixed media works on paper are a result of an exploration in the landscape that I call “viewfinding. '' This exploration involves looking at the surrounding physical environment from different perspectives, discovering features that are significant to me and producing evidence of these discoveries in my work. To expand my concept of the landscape I explore multiple ways of viewing, i.e. viewing from different positions in the landscape, through window frames and through secondary sources of information such as maps and scientific diagrams. Levels of information are collected and reassembled in my "view” drawings of the landscape. The resulting …
A Construct Validity Study For The Women Workers Scale Questionnaire, Gwen Simpson
A Construct Validity Study For The Women Workers Scale Questionnaire, Gwen Simpson
Dissertations and Theses
This study attempted to obtain evidence on the construct validity of the Women Workers Scale (WWS), an attitude scale developed to measure male supervisors' attitudes toward women workers. As women enter the work world in increasing numbers, they are usually supervised by men. However, few studies have examined the attitudes of male supervisors toward women workers. At least one author (Bass, 1972) reported that there were significant differences among male managers in their attitudes toward women. Specifically, those male managers who had not worked with women held more favorable attitudes than male managers who had worked with women.
My Onepoint Plan For Saving The World Or Approaching The Goddess, Playfully, Jason Eric Jones
My Onepoint Plan For Saving The World Or Approaching The Goddess, Playfully, Jason Eric Jones
Art & Art History ETDs
This thesis discusses my primary motivations in making art, which center around a felt need to exercise the nonverbal, arational processes that seem inappropriate, or at least generally neglected, in our culture. The trend toward increasing intellectuality at the expense of emotionality is described as a prime cause of Western civilization's “spiritual bankruptcy," and various rebellious movements against this trend, such as the cult of the White Goddess, are mentioned, briefly. Bicameral mind theory is used as a convenient model for the duality of the rational and the intuitive. In the context of this model, my approach to photography, which …
Mexicans, Labor, And Strife In Arizona, 1896-1917, Michael E. Casillas
Mexicans, Labor, And Strife In Arizona, 1896-1917, Michael E. Casillas
History ETDs
The years between 1890 and 1920 were crucial in the rise of modern organized labor in the United States. During this period, America saw the demise of the Knights of Labor and the subsequent ascent to union supremacy of the American Federation of Labor. As the organized labor movement grew, it reached out to encourage the participation of workers throughout the Rocky Mountain region and the far west. Western laborers, led by hard rock miners, created organizations such as the American Labor Union (ALU), Western Labor Union (WLU), and most notably the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) that represented their …

This thesis presents a record of the history of the Ethiopian Theatre from its beginning in 1973 though 1979. It traces and studies the educational validity and essential contributions to the New Orleans community.
The basis for this study is derived mainly from the theatre's organizers, Monroe and Anthony Bean. Together they define the purpose, goals and structure of the Ethiopian Theatre.
The record exhibits the types of activities and productions performed, reviews and coverage by the media, and the community's reactions and support.
It also examines the techniques and methods employed by the directors in the development of believable …
A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel
A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For history sources, I have depended heavily on the relevant pieces of literature in my possession, on those of Loma Linda University, California, and of the University of Washington, Seattle, and on those in the Arab Republic of Egypt, particularly at Al-Azhar University, the American University at Cairo, and the British Consulate in Cairo. Further, I have had personal interviews with professors at Loma Linda and Seattle, and with Muslim and Christian scholars (clergy and laity) in Egypt and Nigeria.
Since this survey is more historical than sociological, and since Islamic da'wah is twelve to thirteen centuries older than sociological …

A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber
A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber
Masters Theses
As in other folk art, White spiritual music has not been welI-documented. In this particular case, there does not even exist a clear definition of this somewhat unknown and often misunderstood phenomenon.
The intent of this thesis is to present and justify a comprehensive definition of White spiritual music. To arrive at this goal, a two-fold approach was taken. The first chapter of the thesis does not deal precisely with White spiritual music, but rather with related and complementary concepts which are more familiar to the average person. This writer feels that what one may know or think he knows …

Alienation And Creativity: A Study In Twentieth Century American Art, Judi Church
Alienation And Creativity: A Study In Twentieth Century American Art, Judi Church
Art & Art History ETDs
The society in which one lives conditions the creativity of the individual. To quote Herbert Read, alienation, "is the progressive divorce of human faculties from natural process.” A society in which alienation is pervasive will spawn types of artistic activity related to that phenomenon. The desire to create is a positive means of transcending the alienation of contemporary life. In attempting through art to unite self and world I have looked to the works and lives of other artists. These include Jasper Johns, Antonio Tapiès, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, and Richard Diebenkorn. The evolution of my work over the past …

The Influence Of Traditional Practices In The Church Life Of Etche People, Emmanuel Amadi
The Influence Of Traditional Practices In The Church Life Of Etche People, Emmanuel Amadi
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
All through the ages, even before the advent of Christianity, the Ibos, in general, have treasured these practices because they served their cultural and social concerns. But no sooner was Christianity introduced into the various segments of our society than conflicts upon conflicts began to erupt. The Etche man, like his relatives the Ibos, is torn between two worlds. Christianity demands that he give up his past, while his culture insists that he stick to his heritage. The Etche man today asks how these conflicting thoughts can be reconciled. In this thesis, the writer shall attempt to describe these traditional …
Empire And Opposition: Class, Ethnicity And Ideology In The Mine-Mill Union Of Grant County, New Mexico, Jack Cargill
Empire And Opposition: Class, Ethnicity And Ideology In The Mine-Mill Union Of Grant County, New Mexico, Jack Cargill
History ETDs
In the past decade, as more documentation has become available, a growing number of serious studies have begun the process of re-evaluating and re-defining the post-World War II period. The Communist Party's role in CIO unions is one aspect of the American experience during this era that demands new inquiry. Party members led some of the largest unions in the United States, and these organizations played an important part in the Cold War polarization and repression. Bert Cochran's Labor and Communism came out shortly before I completed my research, and his monograph does much to separate fact from fancy, but …

DéSiré Charnay: Photographer, Keith F. Davis
Art & Art History ETDs
Desire Charnay, born in France in 1828, was a traveler, explorer, author and photographer best known for his studies of the Pre-Columbian ruins in Mexico. Educated and well-read, Charnay taught school in New Orleans before embarking on his 1857-61 expedition to Mexico. Using the cumbersome wet collodion process, he made the first successful photographs of the ruined monuments of Mitla, Chichen-Itza, Palenque, Izamal and Uxmal. These were published in a large folio of original photographic prints, entited Cites et ruines americaines, in Paris in 1862. Charnay returned to these and other Mexican sites in 1880-82 and 1886, and published many …
ConcepcióN Arenal And The Social Gospel, Charlotte Lazear Cutter
ConcepcióN Arenal And The Social Gospel, Charlotte Lazear Cutter
History ETDs
Concepcion Arenal ranks as one of nineteenth century Spain's most important women. Born in El Ferrol, Galicia in 1820, her principal fame accrues from her voluminous didactic writing on the social question. During her lifetime she was a feature writer for Spanish periodicals, a contributor to international congresses, and an insatiable though repetitive expounder on the general themes of beneficence and prisons. After a brief career as a newspaper writer jointly with her husband, Concepcion Arenal was left a widow with two children to raise and bad only her pen as a means of support.
In a world of conformity, …
An Analysis Of The Use Of Parody In Hervé'S Le Petit Faust, Sally J. Bissell
An Analysis Of The Use Of Parody In Hervé'S Le Petit Faust, Sally J. Bissell
Music ETDs
The 19th-century genre of opera known as operetta has been commented upon since its appearance in the early 1830's, and most commentators credit the composer Hervé with the creation in 1848 of a particularly satirical, farcical type of operetta called opéra-bouffe. Hervé's contributions to the genre have not been fully explored, perhaps because Offenbach's contributions were so great. This paper analyzes Hervé's use of parody in Le petit Faust in order to add to the meagre coverage of his work.
Hervé creates a ''mock epic" in Le petit Faust based on the old Faust legend as retold by Goethe and …

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
What attitudes do pastors have toward alcoholics? Specifically, do parish pastors of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod have positive or negative attitudes in their ministry to alcoholics? Are the attitudes of pastors a significant factor in an effective ministry to alcoholics? What attitudinal factors can be specified as having particular significance? These are the fundamental questions which this study addresses.

Culture Shock And Adaptation Among Student Missionaries To Japan, Sheryl J. Craig
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to delineate certain parameters of the experience of student missionaries to Japan. This study was a longitudinal, descriptive study which identified background characteristics, aspects of the adaptation process, and stages and intensity of culture shock.
A group of twenty-seven student missionaries were followed from their arrival in Japan, which occurred over a three-month summer period, through the following May, just prior to their expected departure. Data were gathered using interviews, questionnaires, a semantic differential (to measure attitudes), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.
The time when subjects were most at risk for high anxiety, poorer …

Don Diego De Silva: Spanish American Ambassador In England, 1564-1568, Jack K. Nielsen
Theses and Dissertations
A resident ambassador in the late sixteenth century faced many challenges, among which were: gathering, evaluating, and relaying useful information; performing negotiations on behalf of his principal; and calming troubled waters at the foreign court. The way in which he .faced these challenges determined the extent of the ambassador's success.
Jon Jiego Guzman de Silva, Spanish ambassador in Zngland .from 1564-1568, faced these challenges and others because he was a staunch Catholic at a Protestant court. Although he was able to maintain his position at court for four years, he was not totally successful. He forwarded much useful and correct …
