Taos Indians And The Blue Lake Controversy, Ronald P. Archibeck Dec 1971

Taos Indians And The Blue Lake Controversy, Ronald P. Archibeck

History ETDs

This paper shall concern itself with the sixty-four year controversy between the Taos Pueblo Indians and the United States Forest Service over the question of who should control the Blue Lake area in northern New Mexico.

To the Taos Indians, Blue Lake was their most sacred religious shrine -- the place or their emergence and re-entry into the earth after death. Also of importance because of numerous religious shrines were the 48,000 acres of wilderness watershed land adjoining the lake known as the Blue Lake area. The Indians had to convince Washington of this religious importance -- it was only …

Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day Dec 1971

Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day

Honors Theses

After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the appearance of Europe was changed almost to that of the eighteenth century. France had been returned to her old borders, the multitude of little kingdoms in Italy and Germany had been reinstated, and Russia had taken back the portion of Poland that she had acquired in 1793. The general alliance of all European countries against a superior France was discontinued as soon as France had lost that position. It had been nothing more than one of the agreements that European countries made when they were under pressure. The enemy was only the …

Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker Dec 1971

Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker

English Language and Literature ETDs

The repeated use of the journey motif and the extended descriptions of landscape in Shelley's major poems suggest that journey and landscape are either allegorical or symbolic, or both. Furthermore, biographical evidence indicates that Shelley was particularly attracted to quest literature, and that he responded strongly to specific modes of travelling and to particular types of landscape.

The analysis of landscape imagery in Shelley's shorter poems reveals that natural settings such as forests, caves, bodies of water, and mountains are habitually used as images for the human mind. The journey through landscape thus becomes logically a mental journey. It is …

The Reaction To Enclosure In Tudor Policy And Thought, Kenneth Michael Kines Dec 1971

The Reaction To Enclosure In Tudor Policy And Thought, Kenneth Michael Kines

Master's Theses

The original idea for this thesis in British Agrarian History evolved when it was discovered how much attention has been given to interpreting primary source material, and how little attention has been given to the primary sources themselves The student in Britain must find the task of research somewhat simple, for within the bounds of London can be found most of the necessary records, letters and statutes. The student confined to the United States must rely heavily upon printed sources. This paper is intended to serve as a guide to and study of major enclosure writings, speeches and policies that …

The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry Dec 1971

The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry

Honors Theses

The history of Arkansas' Stream Preservation movement is not a long one, because only in the recent past have Arkansans taken a serious look at the long term effects of such things as damming streams and clearing land.

The core of the movement for stream preservation centers around the Buffalo River, in the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks. Because of this, the bulk of this paper will be devoted to the Buffalo.

A Review Of "Oral Interpretation Of Biblical Literature" By Chloe Armstrong, Rita Lewis Dec 1971

A Review Of "Oral Interpretation Of Biblical Literature" By Chloe Armstrong, Rita Lewis

Honors Theses

Members of today's society, upon hearing the word Bible, immediately associated it with the Christian religion as its guide book, its creed, and its collection of doctrinal material. The term Bible is synonymous with the Holy Scriptures and the Word of God. In short, people of our culture, whether they themselves are Christians, view the Bible as a symbol of Christianity and its sole source of religious dogma.

However, besides its religious worth, the Bible also is universally considered an unrivaled compilation of timeless literature. Many scholars have attested to this fact, including Frederic Kenyon, who stated, "Apart from …

A Critique Of Robert S. Hartman's 'Four Axiological Proofs Of The Infinite Value Of Man', Raymond M. Pruitt Dec 1971

A Critique Of Robert S. Hartman's 'Four Axiological Proofs Of The Infinite Value Of Man', Raymond M. Pruitt

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine Professor Robert S. Hartman's notion that the individual human person is of infinite value. In a recent paper he attempts to establish his concept by arguments which are founded upon four axiological definitions of man: epistemological, logical, ontological, and teleological.

The thesis is concerned with the validity of the arguments, their applicability to the existing human person, and whether or not Professor Hartman has made unwarranted assumptions.

I conclude that his arguments tend to be circular, and there are too many assumptions. I believe he has made a good case for the …

An Hegelian Interpretation Of The Vietnam War, Diane Heggarty Dec 1971

An Hegelian Interpretation Of The Vietnam War, Diane Heggarty

All Master's Theses

This essay attempts to use the philosophy of politics and history of George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel to interpret a contemporary situation--the Vietnam War. The gradual involvement of America in Vietnam is illustrated by the use of Hegel's dialectic or logic. Internal problems and strife are put in perspective by Hegel's political philosophy. Problems arise because general theories must always ignore particulars in a concrete situation such as Vietnam. But Hegel's view of the world is generally applicable to the twentieth century.

Annotated Bibliography And Some Integrating Observations On Conversion Including A Brief New Testament Study, Jeffrey Anderson Nov 1971

Annotated Bibliography And Some Integrating Observations On Conversion Including A Brief New Testament Study, Jeffrey Anderson

Master of Divinity Thesis

The diversity of views on conversion and the conflict within talk about conversion leads us to believe that the vital question remains unanswered: What is conversion? Conversion is a functional word in most people’s religious vocabulary, but it has a host of meanings, and many who use the term are not able to clarify their meaning. Our analysis of material on conversion--psychological, religious, and New Testament—has led to several conclusions and integrating statements. They are spelled out under their various headings below.

Spain And Dos De Mayo, John P. Lewis Nov 1971

Spain And Dos De Mayo, John P. Lewis

History ETDs

The principles of the Ancien Regime were inappropriate by 1800, yet Charles IV of Spain and his adviser, Manuel Godoy, protracted the existence of such methods of misgovernment until the forced abdication in 1808. As most countries pressed forward with the assistance of the developing industrial revolution, Spain remained a retarded land with an unproductive nobility, an all powerful mesta, a tiny middle class, and a shackled peasantry. The government was no more advanced since it was comprised of the absolute sovereign at the apex of the social triangle and the military establishment under the captain-general. Conditions for revolution were …

An Autonomous Lutheran Church In Canada In A Time Of Rising Nationalism, Roger Ellis

Master of Divinity Thesis

While this paper is concerned with the historical development of the fellowship discussions among the three church bodies it will be presented here in a cursory fashion for itis not the main intention of this paper to be a history. The LC-C has just commissioned the writing and publishing of a book on this very subject which is now available in paperback, written by the Rev. Albert Schwermann. What this paper will try to demonstrate and say is that the United States is a foreign country, different from Canada, and that in this time of rising nationalism in Canada it …

A Comparative Study Of The Doctrine Of Scripture In Article 4 Of The Apology Of The Augsburg Confession With The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Works Of Kister Stendahl, Jerry Kosberg

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper is to be a comparative study of the doctrine of Scripture found in Article Four of the Apology of the Augsburg Confession with the doctrine of Scripture found in various representative writings of Dr. Krister Stendahl. The paper will be an attempt to establish the relationship between the view of Scripture found in an article of the Lutheran Confessions and the view of Scripture found in a Lutheran biblical scholar who works from the perspective of what may be called the historical -critical method. In other words, the question this paper is asking is: Is the historical - …

What Sort Of Personality Should The Pastor-Counselor Have, Walter Geist Nov 1971

What Sort Of Personality Should The Pastor-Counselor Have, Walter Geist

Master of Divinity Thesis

Young men going into the service of the church only have a vague idea about the role of pastor as counselor. They realize that there is a certain amount of counseling they will be required to do as pastors and yet their seminary education provides them with few structured courses in this area of ministry. The student may suddenly realize that he is not prepared to function as counselor for personal problems and interpersonal relationships. In an effort to help the student prepare for counseling relationships this study will examine and present the most basic resource a pastor-counselor should have; …

The Indiana Congressional Delegation And Foreign Policy Issues 1939-1941, Loretta S. Glaze

Graduate Thesis Collection

This paper is an examination of the foreign policy attitudes of Indiana's United States Senators and Representatives during the critical years before the Second World War. My purpose is to determine whether these particular Mid-Westerners were a part of the isolationist bloc in Congress which exerted a significant influence on the formulation of foreign policy. The scope of the study is limited to an elucidation of the individual views as expressed in Congress b the members of the delegation and an analysis of the campaign for re-election waged by each of them as it relates to the broader issue.

The Niched Figures Of The Olmec And Maya Sculpture: Stylistic And Iconographic Similarities Between The Olmec Altars And The CopáN And Quiriguá Stone Zoomorphs., Anna Chyczewska Aug 1971

The Niched Figures Of The Olmec And Maya Sculpture: Stylistic And Iconographic Similarities Between The Olmec Altars And The CopáN And Quiriguá Stone Zoomorphs., Anna Chyczewska

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the relationships which exist between Olmec and Maya art by comparing style and iconography of the Olmec altars and the Maya zoomorphs of Quiriguá and Copán. A stylistic analysis of these Olmec and Maya monuments indicates that Olmec sculpture included both three-dimensional and two-dimensional compositions; Maya sculpture suggests development from the two-dimensional into a more complex and dynamic three-dimensional arrangement of forms. The great importance of the more or less stylized features of the jaguar, of the serpent, and of grotesque creatures combining both reptilian and feline aspects emerges from …

The Symbolist And Decadent Elements In The Lyrical Dramas Of Oscar Wilde, Nancy G. Nuckols Aug 1971

The Symbolist And Decadent Elements In The Lyrical Dramas Of Oscar Wilde, Nancy G. Nuckols

Master's Theses

The terms decadence, aestheticism, art for art's sake have been used interchangeably to describe the movement in literature that flowered during the 1890's in England. Despite the fact that the English aesthetics and decadents were a relatively small group, they were vocal and colorful. Many contributed to the numerous aesthetic and semi-aesthetic periodicals with such titles as The Chamelion, The Butter, The Rose Leaf, and The Hobby Horse. In this way the decadents presented the new trends in art and literature to the general public. In London during the 1890's the literacy taverns were full of these decadent artists who …

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam Aug 1971

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam

Theses and Dissertations

In general, high school choruses do not reach their potential as far as choral tone is concerned. The tone is generally characterized by either a completely undisciplined and labored sound or a pseudo "mature" sound imposed upon the students by a director seeking to emulate his college choir.

When high school choruses sing freely and naturally, they do so because they are taught and inspired to do so by their director. Therefore, the director must understand the concepts of correct singing and must have in his possession practical techniques that will develop a program of correct singing in the high …

Since printmaking has been such a relatively new experience of expression for me, I chose to concentrate this study on the printmaking process.

A Use Of The Visual Metaphor: The Relationship Between The Figure To The Environment, Betty Anne Skalicky

All Master's Theses

In this study the human figure was used as a departure. I imposed my own style of drawing on the human form in order to achieve not only the illusion of a threedimensional quality, but to create a personal identification with the image on the part of the artist and the viewer.
