As seems so often to be the case, judging from history, the middle-of-the-road group in nineteenth-century Cuba, Reformists and Autonomists, were condemned by those at either extreme. In this study an attempt will be made to determine the role of these groups during the formative period of the Cuban nation.

Calderon's "La Nave Del Mercador": Auto Sacramental, S. Hugh Fitch Aug 1950

Calderon's "La Nave Del Mercador": Auto Sacramental, S. Hugh Fitch

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The definitions of the Auto sacramental which have been devised over a period of three hundred years, from Lope de Vega to the present day, vary from the strictness of: "el auto sacramental, cuyo tema es exclusivamente el dogma de la presencia eucaristica," to the opposite extreme of "No era esencial al auto la materia eucaristica, ni lo fue nunca, en ninguna epoca de su historia." In order to understand the disparity between these two statements, it will be necessary to review the history of the auto, and to see how it developed in the hands of the master of …

A Graphic Interpretation Of Four Pueblo Indian Corn Dances, Robert L. Smith Aug 1950

A Graphic Interpretation Of Four Pueblo Indian Corn Dances, Robert L. Smith

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to supplement what the author has already attempted to express in terms of paint. Therein he gives a personal interpretation of four Pueblo Indian Corn Dances; here he presents such factual data and explanation as he feels pertinent to his emotional appreciation of the dances. It is perhaps equally important to state not only what is the intent in this paper but also what is not intended. The writer does not attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of the subject-- geographical, ethnological, or archaeological. As any student of Indian culture knows it would be …

Character Portrayal In The Works Of Miguel De Unamuno, Barbara Brooks Aug 1950

Character Portrayal In The Works Of Miguel De Unamuno, Barbara Brooks

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Unamuno, therefore, had a twofold purpose in writing novels. He wanted to delve into the soul of the person to find out what struggle caused his personality, and then he wanted to see how this struggle effected the individual's attitude towards death and eternal life.

The purpose of this study is to see how well Unamuno succeeded in carrying out these two central themes, first, intimately, in his own character; second, remotely, in the character of his reader; and third, creatively, in the characters of his novels.

The University Of Richmond And Her War Effort, 1939-1945, Robert Richard Shotzberger Aug 1950

The University Of Richmond And Her War Effort, 1939-1945, Robert Richard Shotzberger

Master's Theses

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese made their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and the United States was at war. This marked the second time within a quarter of a century, and the fifth time in the history of the University, that war clouds hovered over the United States. During World War I, the University vacated its new campus (the present site) in favor of the United States War Department. The campus and all of the buildings were used for hospital purposes. Thousands of soldiers, wounded on the Western Front, were hospitalized in the buildings on the new campus. These …

The Fiction Of Sarah Barnwell Elliott, Charles V. Flowers Aug 1950

The Fiction Of Sarah Barnwell Elliott, Charles V. Flowers

Masters Theses

(From the Conclusion)

In a final consideration of the significance of Sarah Barnwell Elliott, it is necessary to compare her with other writers of the period, and to estimate her achievement in relation to those writers. First, it must be understood that in the latter half of the nineteenth century realism was a growing genre in serious literature, replacing the romantic and the sentimental in critical approbation. The trend toward realism resembled the earlier romantic movement, with its successful opposition to the artificiality of corrupt eighteenth century neo-classicism. Both reforms sought to re-emphasize the real, as against the …

The Hawaiian Movement For Statehood, Ruth E. Mcpherson Aug 1950

The Hawaiian Movement For Statehood, Ruth E. Mcpherson

Masters Theses

Preface: The Hawaiian movement for statehood is part of the bloodstream of Hawaiian history. Of necessity, therefore, this thesis is an account of those economic, political and cultural forces which bear upon Hawaii's qualifications for full-fledged membership in the American union of states. This study, it is hoped, will furnish sufficient proof that no factor in Hawaiian development has long been able to defy the magnetism which has pulled these mid-Pacific islands closer and closer to the very wellsprings of American life and government. Offered also is the proposition that this magnetism is still at work--that it almost certainly will …

Keats And The New Critics, William Harold Hunter Aug 1950

Keats And The New Critics, William Harold Hunter

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The term "New Criticism" has been applied to the work of critics before our time, but in its current use it brings to mind a body of work that originated with T. S. Elliot and I. A. Richards. John Crowe Ransom first employed the term in the present sense; it now applies to such critics as Allen Tate, Cleanth Brooks, Robert Penn Warren, Kenneth Burke, R. P. Blackmur, and Ransom himself in America, and to William Empson, L. C. Knights, G. Wilson Knight, and F. R. Leavis in England.

Two elements distinguish the New Criticism …

Hezekiah Niles And The British, 1811-1815, Marian V. Cochran Jul 1950

Hezekiah Niles And The British, 1811-1815, Marian V. Cochran

History ETDs

Hezekiah Niles was born in 1777 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where his parents had fled for safety before the Battle of Brandywine. After the period of danger passed, the Niles family once more took up their residence in Wilmington, Delaware. Niles spent his boyhood days here and apparently received most of his education in the Friends School. The fact that his father had been disowned by the Quaker congregation casts some doubt upon the place of the youth's education. His course of study was typical of the best in that time -- a thorough knowledge of the "three R's" and …

Buggs Island Dam, First Of The Roanoke River Projects, Jayne Hathaway Cosby Jul 1950

Buggs Island Dam, First Of The Roanoke River Projects, Jayne Hathaway Cosby

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to give a comprehensive picture of the history, setting and effects of tha Federal Dam now being constructed at the site of Buggs Island in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, In writing this assay I have attempted to bring out the historical and evolutionary aspects of the dam rather than the technical aspects of its construction.

The completion of this dam at Buggs Island and the sub-sequent flooding of this area will mark a great step forward in the history of both Virginia and North Carolina. Many controversies still rage around its construction. The final outcome …

A Study Of The Metaphysical Categories Of Charles Sanders Peirce, Oscar Edwyn Luttrell Jul 1950

A Study Of The Metaphysical Categories Of Charles Sanders Peirce, Oscar Edwyn Luttrell

Master's Theses

Little is known about the life of Charles Sanders Peirce and perhaps even less about his system and place in the history of American philosophical thought. Somewhat superficially we recognize that he influenced the pragmatism of William James, but even here, were the facts known, the influence would be exceedingly remote, owing to James's own misinterpretation of' Peirce's leading ideas. Prof. Perry says that: "Perhaps it would be correct, and just to all parties, to say that the modern movement known as pragmatism is largely the result of James's misunderstanding of Peirce." James himself at one time stated that Peirce …

A Study Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old Testament As Related To The Old Testament Religious Experience, Walter D. Elmer Jun 1950

A Study Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old Testament As Related To The Old Testament Religious Experience, Walter D. Elmer

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

A well rounded knowledge of Biblical truth has been found to be impossible apart from a basic study of the relationship between the ministry of the Spirit of God and Old Testament religious experience. The importance of this study has reminded this investigator of the importance Jesus attached to a careful consideration of all the parts of a problem before venturing a solution.

The Validity Of Conditional Prayer And The Providence Of God, Robert Spieler Jun 1950

The Validity Of Conditional Prayer And The Providence Of God, Robert Spieler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the problem stated towards the end of' establishing unequivocally the fact that conditional prayer is a valid reality in the realm of God's providence. A solution of the problem is, of course, impossible on any other premises except those which are faithful to Scripture. It will be noted how the systems of rational philosophy serve only to establish the impossibility of reconciling the fact of God’s providence with the fact of conditional prayer. According to such systems, the problem is usually solved by denying either the reality of conditional prayer or …

The Geological Implications Of Genesis Ch 1-11, Fred Kramer Jun 1950

The Geological Implications Of Genesis Ch 1-11, Fred Kramer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is written on the premise that God has given man two books from which he may learn to know Him, the book or nature and the Holy Scripture. There can be no contradiction between these two books. Where men have affirmed contradictions between them, e.g., on scientific grounds, they either misinterpreted scientific data or the words or Scripture.

The New Testament Concept Of The Son Of Man, John Fritz Jun 1950

The New Testament Concept Of The Son Of Man, John Fritz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The term “Son of Man" was Jesus ‘favorite self-designation. It occurs approximately eighty times in the Gospel records. Though Jesus accepted as appropriate titles for Himself such terms as Messiah, Son of David, the Christ, the Son of God, He at times expressly called Himself the Son of Man in replying to those, who addressed Him with some other title (John 1:49 ,51; Matthew 18: 19, 20).

The Prophectic Office Of Christ And The Power Of The Word, Ralph Fischer Jun 1950

The Prophectic Office Of Christ And The Power Of The Word, Ralph Fischer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis is to set forth that the power of the Word also lies in the prophetic office of Christ, as it is revealed in both the Old and New Testaments and in the oral and written word today. In order to show the power, which the Holy Spirit exerts through the Word, a short section will be devoted to His relationship to the Word. The concluding chapters will set forth the characteristics and the efficacy of the Word. In addition, each section of the outline will be considered as a separate chapter throughout the entire thesis. …

The Parenthesis Of Paul On The Status Of Israel In Romans Nine To Eleven, Erdmann Frenk Jun 1950

The Parenthesis Of Paul On The Status Of Israel In Romans Nine To Eleven, Erdmann Frenk

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

During the past few years and months, especially during the time the new Zionist state of Israel was being formed, much discussion has arisen regarding an age-old problem of an age-old people. Where do these people who have been the modern heirs of a tradition some thousands of years old fit into present-day civilization? However, for the Church, these external and secular happenings have served as a reminder of an even greater problem, namely, where does this people fit in spiritually? What is to happen to this tribe from which the Redeemer Himself stemmed? And this is no new problem, …

The Eschatological Tension Of The Kingdom Of God And Interpretations By American Protestant Theology, Vernon Schreiber Jun 1950

The Eschatological Tension Of The Kingdom Of God And Interpretations By American Protestant Theology, Vernon Schreiber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In our quest for an understanding of the problems raised by an investigation of American theological utterances concerning the Kingdom of God, we have turned first of all, to the New Testament presentation of the Kingdom of God.

An Evaluation Of The Rsv Translation Of St. Paul’S Letters To The Thessalonians, James Lowell Dishop Jun 1950

An Evaluation Of The Rsv Translation Of St. Paul’S Letters To The Thessalonians, James Lowell Dishop

Bachelor of Divinity

The question which the writer has undertaken to answer in this thesis is this: How does the Revised Standard Version of the letters of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians compare with the Authorized Version or sixteen-hundred eleven, commonly called the King James Version, as an English translation suitable for public and private use by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod?

The Shekinah Concept In The Biblical Era, Horace D. Hummel Jun 1950

The Shekinah Concept In The Biblical Era, Horace D. Hummel

Bachelor of Divinity

In brief, the problem, common to the Old Testament, as to all other religious and to all except atheistic philosophies, is that of God’s transcendence vs. His immanence. If God is the Creator, the Absolute, the Prime Mover, what contact, if any, can He have with the created, sensible universe? If the pantheistic solution of identifying creator and creation is rejected, some degree of divine transcendence must be predicated. If He is transcendent, how will he reveal Himself to mankind? Through intermediaries, or by self-revelation; and, if the latter, by theophany or incarnation?

A Christian Interpretation Of Sex, Richard Scheimann Jun 1950

A Christian Interpretation Of Sex, Richard Scheimann

Bachelor of Divinity

There is a sharp discrepancy between profession and practice in the sex life of the American people. It is commonly said that the philosophy of sexual conduct which has been traditionally held up to the public has been strongly determined by Puritanism. Neither Puritanism nor traditional morals are popular any more.. Especially the “Puritanism” and the morals connected with sexual behavior.

A Study Of Αιωn In Paul's Epistles, G Waldemar Degner Jun 1950

A Study Of Αιωn In Paul's Epistles, G Waldemar Degner

Bachelor of Divinity

There are chiefly three purposes in this study. The first is to gain a better understanding of the Scriptures. To achieve this purpose an individual word has been selected, since it is the author's opinion that such a study will contribute most to a conviction of the unity of the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments and at the same time facilitate efficiency in handling certain basic mechanical tools for further the future studies, such as the concordances, lexicon, and commentaries.

Pastoral Counseling-, Karl A. Tubesing Jun 1950

Pastoral Counseling-, Karl A. Tubesing

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose and intent of this thesis is not that it be an exhaustive treatise of the subject, which it is not, nor that it be a critical analysis of that which has been written on the subject, but rather that it set forth in clear review certain fundamental and basic definitions and principles of Pastoral Counseling, which when understood, will help to clarify the present seeming confusion. It is the author’s fond hope that in some small way this thesis may help to accomplish this result. To this end this thesis is an attempt to define Pastoral Counseling as …

Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz Jun 1950

Paul's Treatment Of Error In Galatians, Frederick C. Hinz

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the present writer in this thesis has been to determine just how Paul went about treating and refuting the error. What were his arguments and attitudes over against his converts? His opponents? The error itself? Were his arguments sound and convincing? Does he leave room for compromise? To what degree does he allow his own self to enter the picture? In attempting to answer these questions, the writer has endeavored at all times to maintain objectivity except where a difference of opinion among leading commentators forced him to exercise selectivity. Detailed exegesis has been kept to a …
