"Giving Back To The Community!" Interview With Gil Scott-Heron, February 1995, Amilcar Shabazz

Afro-American Studies Faculty Publication Series

GIL SCOTT-HERON is a legendary musician in the tradition of Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Larry Neal and other Black cultural artists who helped raise the socio-political consciousness during the sixties. Many credit him as the most influential figure in the early genesis of rap music. His incorporation of wordsongs throughout most of his music helped lay the basis for today's rap artists. Beginning in 1970 with SMALL TALK AT 125TH & LENOX, he has recorded over 22 albums, published two novels and three works of poetry, and has performed throughout the world. Evolution Of Musical Organisms, Bruno Degazio Jan 1996

Evolution Of Musical Organisms, Bruno Degazio

Publications and Scholarship

The development of software for musical applications has led to a proliferation of elaborate control paradigms with extremely large parameter spaces. These spaces can be daunting to explore interactively because of their vastness. Furthermore, parameters often interact in ways not made explicit by the control panel, effectively increasing the complexity of the space even further. Application of genetic algorithms (GAs) can be used to search through these vast spaces in a highly efficient manner. Coordinated control of interacting parameters is handled automatically by this system. Even for control paradigms that are well understood, the genetic algorithm can efficiently search out …

A Computer-Based Editor For Lerdahl And Jackendoff's Rhythmic Structures, Bruno Degazio

Publications and Scholarship

In “A Generative Theory of Tonal Music”, Lerdahl and Jackendoff discuss two forms of rhythmic structure which they call metrical structure and grouping structure. Together these constitute a basis for an analytical understanding of rhythmic structure in music. This article is about a software based editor which allows the interactive exploration of these two types of hierarchical rhythmic structures.

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1996

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. The paper examines four themes: the portrayal of Singapore's multiracial population which reflects a unique cultural synthesis; the Singaporeans' concept of urbanity, manifested as the simultaneous attraction and repulsion towards the city and the desire for nature and the rustic; the distinctive social engineering in Singapore; and the way in which global issues are imported into …
