“And They Were All Astonished (?)” The Verb Ἐκπλήσσω, Competition, And Mark’S Narrative, Nathaniel Desrosiers
Journal of Religious Competition in Antiquity
This essay discusses the key Greek verb e0kplh/ssw in Mark’s gospel, which is typically rendered as “astonished” or “amazed” in English translations. However, outside of the New Testament the term usually connotes a much more emotional, visceral response than mere amazement; relaying a sense of anger, frustration, and the threat of violence. Accordingly, I argue that standard modern renderings of this verb in Mark and the other Synoptic Gospels are not only inaccurate; they also detract from the overall depth and meaning of the passages in which it appears. Through a reexamination of this verb in concert with an analysis …
Towards A Theology For Competitive Sport, John Ashley Null
Towards A Theology For Competitive Sport, John Ashley Null
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Current research such as that of Sagar and Stoeber (2009) confirms how common amongst perfectionist sportspersons is the fear of failure with its attendant sense of worthlessness and shame (Sagar, Boardely & Kavussanu, 2011). In the face of this bleak reality, many see holy play as the only credible Christian alternative. In this paper, however, I disagree. After taking a fresh look at the roots of holy play as well as the contemporary magisterial work of Shirl Hoffman, I will argue for a more nuanced theological appreciation of sports competition.

Features Of Formation Of The Competitive Environment In Small Business In The Conditions Of Development Of Innovative Economy, Rano Sadikova Phd
The Light of Islam
In a market economy, small business is the leading sector that determines the rate of economic growth, the composition and quality of the gross national product. The development and expansion of the sphere of production and services of small businesses in the Republic will eventually lead to an increase in employment and the development of the country’s economy as a whole.
Further enhancement of the role of small business in the national economy and further improvement of its participation in economic growth largely depends on the state of the competitive environment in this area. It is connected with creation of …

Jealousy, Competition, Or A Contextual Cue For Reward?, Thomas R. Zentall
Jealousy, Competition, Or A Contextual Cue For Reward?, Thomas R. Zentall
Animal Sentience
Emotions are difficult to assess, even in humans. The attribution of jealousy in an animal like a dog is especially difficult because performance of a particular behavior in the context of another animal receiving a reward may not be easily distinguishable from intra-species competition or simply a response to a contextual cue for the availability of reward. The authors provide distinguishing evidence in the form of fMRI data to show that in the presence of a “fake” dog being fed, there is bilateral activation in the amygdala, an area associated with anxiety, anger, fear, and even jealousy in humans.

The Psychology Of Competitive Dance: A Study Of The Motivations For Adolescent Involvement, Samantha Sobash
The Psychology Of Competitive Dance: A Study Of The Motivations For Adolescent Involvement, Samantha Sobash
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
"Competition is a social process that is so pervasive in Western civilization that no one can escape it" (Robson 2004). Dance training for most people begins at an early age, and thus the art form akin to sports introduces youth to competition. The booming dance competition industry has only enhanced the competitive aspect of the art form. Currently there are upwards of 200 local, regional, and national competitions held annually with participants as young as four years old. Is competition innate or are we introducing it as part of youth development in the Western world? Youth are increasingly pushed by …
