Rene Naville, Amerindians Et Anciennes Cultures Precolombiennes: Book Review, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Rene Naville, an active diplomat and writer introduces his readers in this work to a variety of Swiss scholars who as travelers or as academicians have dealt with aspects of the native cultures of the Western Hemisphere. The study of these men is to reveal the Swiss presance in the Americans as well as Latin American and Amerindian presence in Switzerland. The auhor bases his findings mainly on secondary sources: this is an attempted synthesis, not a presentation of original new findings.

The Lessons Of Schwagerehe, Edward E. Busch
The Lessons Of Schwagerehe, Edward E. Busch
Concordia Theological Monthly
Traditional interpretations of Bible passages can have very long lives and can survive strong challenges if they are rooted deeply enough in the culture of a people. A case in point is the idea of Schruagerehe or marriage of in-laws.
Darkness At Noon: Mark's Passion Narrative, Robert H. Smith
Darkness At Noon: Mark's Passion Narrative, Robert H. Smith
Concordia Theological Monthly
The puzzle of Mark's Gospel is not how Jesus can be both human and divine, son of Mary, and Son of God. The mystery has to do rather with the cloud brooding over this Jesus as He proceeds to a lonely and forsaken death. Over all His days as over all His words and works, over His power and His weakness, over His speech and His silence, there falls the shadow of the cross. How can such a portrait be "the good news of Jesus Christ" (1:1)? How can this somber and sobering document be called a "gospel"?

A Study Guide For "The Soteriological Approach To Christian Doctrine", Ronald W. Roschke
Concordia Theological Monthly
The study guide is designed to be used with the entire section of Mayer’s book dealing with the soteriological approach. This includes some material in lessons 3 and 5 not included in this reprint. We have included the page numbers of those materials in Mayer (according to the 1961 edition) so that those who have access to the full volume may use it. Furthermore, those questions dealing with these materials are marked with an *. We have attempted to construct these questions in such a way that discussion can take place even if all members of the class do not …

Documentation: Authority In The Church, C. F. Walther, Arnold Krugler (Translator)
Concordia Theological Monthly
In 1879 Dr. Walther delivered a long essay to Iowa Lutheran congregations who were reluctant to join the Synod because they feared the Synod would arrogate to itself excessive authority over them. With extensive citations from Scripture, Luther, the Lutheran Confessions, and the Lutheran fathers, Walther developed his concept of the proper relationship between Synod and congregations.

The Soteriological Approach To Christian Doctrine., F. E. Mayer
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Lutheran Confessions present all Christian doctrine from the soteriological standpoint, that is, from the meaning each has for our salvation. Each and every doctrine of Christian revelation must be viewed in actu, not only in statu; it must be within the focus of a real spiritual problem and be presented only in its soteriological significance.

The book is a facsimile reproduction of the 1833 edition, a small volume appealing in appearance and pleasant to hold. It describes, in the form of a diary and letters, the experiences of a group of Swiss who emigrated to the prairies of Illinois. Two-thirds of it are devoted to the Journey, the ordeal of "getting there": from Sursee to Base l, through France to Havre, on a three-master to New York and over rivers and canals to St. Louis, Missouri the last stepping stone efore settling in Illinois.
Fritz Medicus, On Being Human . The Life Of Truth And Its Realization: Book Review, Leo Schelbert
Fritz Medicus, On Being Human . The Life Of Truth And Its Realization: Book Review, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
This is a difficult book, the summary of a philosopher's final insights into "Truth and Its Realization". In a language simulataneously straightforward and compledx, questions of logic, ethics, and ultimate values are discussed, all within a tight network of post-Kantian, partly scholastic (that is Judeo-Christianized Aristotelian), Partly idealist (especially Fichtean) concepts. The study demands much patience and willingess to follow a sustained arguement which starts with a critique of phenomenological assumptions and culminates in a redefinition of religion as the domain not of credal structures but of ultimate concern.
