Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This project involved research for Prof. John Hatch’s monograph on the Canadian landscape artist Doris McCarthy, with the objective of completing all preliminary research by the end of the internship period. The resulting book will be published by the Art Canada Institute with an expected publication date of Fall 2023.

Attached includes a powerpoint/video summary of my research and what I learned. As well as an essay, and proposed sub-section of the book, titled McCarthy as a Woman Artist, which goes into detail on how McCarthy's life and career corresponds with social issues at the time.

World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Caster Semenya’s body has caused a rupture within the space of international professional athletics, which is structured according to a binary conceptualization of sex and gender. This rupture created a space for international discourse about alternative ways in which sex and gender can be defined, and to reimagine the space of international professional athletics, and other binary-bound non-sport spaces, to be more inclusive. The Five Peaks Screen of Korea’s Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) is one of the most iconic works of its time. Nevertheless, the remarkable visual impact and cultural significance of the Five Peaks Screen evades systematic scholarly study, partly because of its generic classification as folk art. In this paper, I will resituate the Five Peaks Screen in the artistic tradition of East Asian landscape painting. Learning to ‘read’ places is a fundamental skill for built environment designers. Although we may intuitively respond to different designed environments - the silencing effect of a church interior or the imposing scale of a grand estate, for example – the ability to understand how places are spatially and semiotically constructed (encoded) and interpreted by others (decoded) is an ongoing aspect of design education.
