The Basques, Henry Camille Blaud

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Although the frontiers of knowledge in most fields have been pushed to the point where many people feel that the genius of mankind had solved all, an enigma still con- fronts the contemporary anthropologist and philologist: the riddle of the origin of the Basques and their language.

A Survey Of Moorish Marriage, Mary Louise Faught Jan 1957

A Survey Of Moorish Marriage, Mary Louise Faught

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Purpose of the survey. This is the psychological moment in Moorish history in which to examine the marriage customs of the country. With the advent of Moroccan Independence in 1956, Moroccan manners and customs entered a state of flux--combining the old traditions with new and modern ways of living. As a result, weddings may become simpler, and the marriage outlook may become more vest- ernized; but, the background for both institutions will remain rooted in the age-old traditions and beliefs. It is these we will discuss in this thesis. They may possibly disappear within our own lifetimes, and it is, …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Characters Of Two Dramatic King Lears : Shakespeare And Bottomley, Doyne Joseph Mraz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been the purpose of this study to make a comparative analysis of the most significant characters in two selections of dramatic literature: Gordon Bottomley’s King Lear’s Wife and William Shakespeare’s King Lear. The significant characters are Goneril and Regan, the “evil influence” in both plays; the two Lears, the “neutral influence” in both plays; and Hygd and Cordelia in King Lear’s Wife and King Lear, respectively. Hygd and Cordelia are the “honorable influence” in the stories.

It has been the further purpose of this thesis to delete from both plays all subplots which do not directly pertain to …

These contributions to the field of church-home relationships are described and analysed in Chapter III.

This thesis is not concerned with the evaluation of the work being done by these groups; it is concerned with what is being done in the area of church-home relationships within the Methodist Church. Specifically stated, the purpose of the thesis is: (1) to determine whether …

The Epic Movement And The California Election Of 1934, Robert Matteson Gordon Jan 1957

The Epic Movement And The California Election Of 1934, Robert Matteson Gordon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Californians, in 1933 and 1934, were psychologically ready to act against prevailing social and economic conditions. Existing economic dislocations could not continue for long without peril. It was not clear whether the revolt would be toward fascism or extreme radicalism. There was at all events a growing popular reaction against those who had political and economic control of the State, and this was especially noticeable in the southern part of the State.

An Analytical Study Of The Ravel Orchestration Of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Maclyn Ball

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In considering Maurice Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition, this paper will consider the work of Ravel from two aspects. First, it will deal with Ravel as a classical craftsman as evident in this orchestration. Second, it will explore this work and in two of his original works in which color is of main importance and some of his characteristics as a colorist. These considerations will follow a preliminary background of Mussorgsky’s piano score, and extant editions thereof.

A Study Of The United States-Korea Treaty Of 1882, Rai Won Pak

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study covers not only the cause of Korea’s entry into the world affairs with the United States in 1882, but also it is a study of modern power politics in the Far East, in which Korea played a significant role.

The importance of the Korea position in international affairs has been dimly treated by the Western World - yet, she is a nation populated by approximately thirty millions; the thirteenth largest nation in the world, and Koreans are the most homogenous people in the world; the nation, which is thrust down off the coast of Asia between the thirty-fifth …

This piece begins very softly as distant drums and bells are heard from the temple. As the listener approaches nearer the temple the music grows louder. The repeated notes 3 flat and A give the impression of the chanting of the priests and the scale passage in the bass clef represents the slow procession of footsteps. The piece ends softly as the distant bells are heard.

A Relationship Between Eastern Thought And Western Psychotherapy : An Application Of Taoism And Zen To Client-Centered Therapy, Lloyd Saxton Jan 1957

A Relationship Between Eastern Thought And Western Psychotherapy : An Application Of Taoism And Zen To Client-Centered Therapy, Lloyd Saxton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper does not purport to be an examination of Zen or Taoism, but rather a view of certain aspects of Zen and Taoism, but rather a view of certain aspects of Zen and Taoism from the vantage point of contemporary psychology, to see if a metaphysic, a philosophical resting-place, might not be found for the admittedly pragmatic science of clinical psychology.

The questions the paper asks, then, and attempts to answer, are (1) can such a formulation be made, and (2) does psychotherapy conducted from this point of view move satisfactorily.

The Life And Teaching Of Lin-Chi I-Shuan, Kazumitsu W. Kato Jan 1957

The Life And Teaching Of Lin-Chi I-Shuan, Kazumitsu W. Kato

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the tradition of the Zen school, all of the monks are required to study what are called the "seven books of Zen. These books are chosen from the old Zen masters' collections, but the "seven books" are different according to each of the schools of Zen. Therefore, it is not possible to say which are "the seven books," but Lin-chi Lu is always listed as the first one of them in every school of Zen.
