Psychodynamics Of Language, Pamela Ann Margerm May 1998

Psychodynamics Of Language, Pamela Ann Margerm

Theses

This work examines the origins of our existing principles of communication to observe patterns of language and their causes. The study surveys twenty-five hundred-years of Western language and writing and its evolution through cultural interaction. The nature of this evolution is the topic of this thesis. There are four periods of time that are studied for their influence on language and writing: the Late Classical Period, the Early and Late Medieval Period, the Early Renaissance, and the Twentieth Century. The study revealed that language and writing have always had a significant metacognitive function within Western culture. Language and writing have …

Samuel Florman And Literature Of Technology, Paul F. Sharke May 1998

Samuel Florman And Literature Of Technology, Paul F. Sharke

Theses

In 1996, engineer and author Samuel Florman asked why engineering and technology had been represented only lightly in literature. From a mere handful of books dealing with this topic, he named The Control of Nature (1989), by John McPhee, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974), by Robert Pirsig, and The Soul of a New Machine (1981), by Tracy Kidder, as being among the best examples of a literary expression of engineering. These three works are examined here in light of Florman's own four books on the subject of engineering, The Existential Pleasures of Engineering (1976), Blaming Technology …

Characteristics Of Expert Web Site Developers : Creativity, Construction Of Meaning, And Problem Solving/Program Development, Nancy E. O'Daniel May 1998

Characteristics Of Expert Web Site Developers : Creativity, Construction Of Meaning, And Problem Solving/Program Development, Nancy E. O'Daniel

Theses

This thesis examines the areas that determine what characteristics produce an expert Web developer. The focus of the study is in the following three areas: creativity, construction of meaning, and problem solving.

To date, no other formal study of this type has been reported. We know much about the World Wide Web itself, but nothing about the people who create the Web sites.

This thesis shows that the idea of an expert Web developer is a misconception. The top-rated sites seem to have been created by a team of developers, each bringing to the group a strength in at least …

Electronic Research Administration : Implementation At New Jersey Institute Of Technology, Lauren V. Rethwisch

Theses

Electronic Research Administration has become the current focus and future direction of the professional field of research administration. It is commonly acknowledged that by the end of this century, all administrative grant functions will be performed by means of electronic data interchange. How well positioned is New Jersey Institute of Technology, a mid-size public research university, to implement pre-award Electronic Research Administration? My research evaluates the readiness of the university community to convert its various pre-award manual processes to an on-line system. The proposed evaluation takes place through a series of internal questionnaires and structured interviews with subject matter experts. …

The Imperative That African-American Authors Define The Nature Of African-American Heroes In Literature: Or Uncle Tom To Jedediah West, Harry Jackson Jr. Jan 1998

The Imperative That African-American Authors Define The Nature Of African-American Heroes In Literature: Or Uncle Tom To Jedediah West, Harry Jackson Jr.

Theses

This document will demonstrate the need for African-American authors to define the essential and fundamental characteristics, disposition and purpose of the literary heroes of African Americans by way of an analysis of the novel, Cowboy, the Saga of Jedediah West, which I wrote between 1995 and 1998. The creation of a distinct literary heroic tradition for African Americans is necessary, I contend, because the culture virtually has been deprived and devoid of literary, imaginary heroes. Because people of every culture require heroes for healthy evolution, African Americans have weighted their heroic tradition with living heroes exclusively who are accepted …

Ethics In Media Communication And The Right To Privacy, Jane M. Decker Jan 1998

Ethics In Media Communication And The Right To Privacy, Jane M. Decker

Theses

This thesis will focus on determining whether or not the media does or does not pay heavy attention to ethical issues when reporting. Much of society believes that the media focuses more on "getting the story", rather than reporting the news. Also, some view the media as an entity which cares only about sensationalism, and producing the highest rating. Over the past fifteen years or so, media coverage has changed quite drastically. Journalists of earlier times would have not been expected to go to any lengths to get a story, as they seem to be in today's world. It is …

Deaccessioning And The Colt Museum Collection, Carl A. Robin Jan 1998

Deaccessioning And The Colt Museum Collection, Carl A. Robin

Theses

The valuation of tangible personal property donated to reduce federal tax liability is an example of one function of the professional appraiser. An equally important task related to charitable contributions involves the appraisal of donated property after it becomes surplus to the needs of the recipient institution.

This study examines controversial exchanges from the Colt Museum Collection at the Connecticut State Library in Hartford between 1977 and 1984, placing them within a broader context to trace the evolution of uniform standards in the museum profession. The central idea recognizes the need for procedural safeguards to guide deaccessioning decisions.

Precipitous decisions …
