The article offers information on the first regional conference of the global network of Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church held in Nairobi, Kenya, in August 2012. Many African theologians discussed issues confronting church and society in Africa from the perspective of theological ethics during the conference. Archbishop John Onaiyekan, Archbishop John Baptist Odama, and Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala attended the conference.

Sexism In Practice: Feminist Ethics Evaluating The Hookup Culture, Conor M. Kelly Oct 2012

Sexism In Practice: Feminist Ethics Evaluating The Hookup Culture, Conor M. Kelly

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Hooking up—the practice of pursuing sexual activity without any expectation of a relationship—has become a fixture of the U.S. college experience, resulting in an identifiable hookup culture across the country that can and should benefit from a feminist analysis. Sociological research reveals that this practice appeals to college students by ostensibly providing greater independence than traditional relationships. An outside analysis of these claims, however, demonstrates that the heterosexual hookup culture operates in a decidedly sexist fashion. In fact, the four common features of this culture: lack of commitment, ambiguous language, alcohol use, and social pressure to conform, all undermine the …

Valuing The Goodness Of Earth, Jame Schaefer Jul 2012

Valuing The Goodness Of Earth, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Though John Chrysostom, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas, when reflecting on the creation story, valued all types of creatures, living and non-living, intrinsically for their unique goodness and instrumentally for the sustenance they provide to others, they valued most highly their complex interrelation in the physical world.

Paul's Witness To Biblical Monotheism As Isaiah's Servant In Acts, William Kurz Jul 2012

Paul's Witness To Biblical Monotheism As Isaiah's Servant In Acts, William Kurz

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The influence of the book of Isaiah on Luke and Acts has been widely discussed and generally admitted.' It has also become a consensus that Luke used the Septuagint (LXX) Isaiah rather than pre-Masoretic Hebrew texts. The Greek translations of Luke's time had already applied and modified the theology of Hebrew Isaiah in usually small but sometimes significant ways.' It is also important to realize that the Lukan author was not aware that the especially influential section, "Second Isaiah;' was a separate writing by a later author. Rather, Luke read the canonical Isaiah as a unified biblical book.

Two Ways Of Being Conscious: The Notion Of Psychic Conversion, Robert Doran Apr 2012

Two Ways Of Being Conscious: The Notion Of Psychic Conversion, Robert Doran

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

In this essay I will present an overview of what I have called psychic conversion. I will begin by narrating the birth of the idea, then will present a brief schematic history of its development and principal applications to date, and will conclude by presenting my current thinking, which involves connections with the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, the depth psychology of C. G. Jung, and the mimetic theory of Rene Girard. It will be clear from the first section that Heidegger and Jung were influential in the very emergence of the idea, but in my current work I have developed …

Theology, Culture And Sustainable Development In Africa, Joseph Ogbonnaya Jan 2012

Theology, Culture And Sustainable Development In Africa, Joseph Ogbonnaya

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Biblical Reflections On Co-Creating With The Redeemer, William Kurz, Anne Carpenter Jan 2012

Biblical Reflections On Co-Creating With The Redeemer, William Kurz, Anne Carpenter

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The Bible does not explicitly answer questions about co-creating with God and discerning whether to try to have children. In consulting Scripture regarding contemporary concerns, one needs to go beyond historical exegesis. Reading Scripture as God's Word requires seeking what God, the divine author of all of Scripture, is currently saying in the biblical passages under study.

The primary foundation for biblical teaching about marriage and family is Genesis, especially concerning God's original intention in creating marriage (Gen 1-2). Humans are created in the image of God as male and female, and marriage is the two becoming one flesh. Most …
