Cold War Nature: Transforming German Poetry, Charlotte Melin Dec 2018

Cold War Nature: Transforming German Poetry, Charlotte Melin

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This essay considers German ‘Naturlyrik’ in terms of factors contributing to the mid-century emergence of political ecopoetry and 21st-century post-pastoral register. Cold War aesthetic experimentation connected with environmental concerns as poets, anthologists, and scholars bridged ideological differences by acknowledging shared values in relation to nature and environment. Material ecocriticism theory provides insight into how during the Cold War the lyric genre became the first to reclaim nature as a place of refuge, then protested the specter of an uninhabitable world, and eventually responded to humanly shaped nature. Work by poets Hans-Jürgen Heise, Peter Huchel, Wulf Kirsten, Ulrike Almut …

A(R)Cadie Heureuse? Space, Place, And Engaged Pastoral In Zachary Richard’S Feu, Rachel A. Paparone

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Cajun musician, poet, and activist Zachary Richard is a vocal advocate for the revival of the Cajun French language and for the preservation of the environment. In his 2001 collection of poetry, Feu (Fire), Richard unites three themes that initially seem distinct: the promotion of Cajun French as his community’s native language, the exploration and memorialization of his Acadian roots, and environmental exploitation. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that throughout the collection Richard frames energy production as an act of imperial aggression, thus aligning the historical persecution of the Acadians and the linguistic and cultural marginalization of the …

Post-Pastoral And The Nonmodern: Jean Giono’S Engagement With Nature, Gina Stamm Dec 2018

Post-Pastoral And The Nonmodern: Jean Giono’S Engagement With Nature, Gina Stamm

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Dismissal of the pastoral as naïve and hostile to progress echoes the critiques which Bruno Latour, in We Have Never Been Modern, makes of what he calls the “antimodern” sensibility. Rather than advocating for an abandonment of the past, however, Latour puts forth a position he calls “nonmodern,” one that allows for recognition of the value of the past and of the natural without idolizing it, that does not demand the forward motion of the modern impulse. While eschewing the “modern” label, he seeks a way to resolve contemporary dichotomies of man vs. nature, human vs. technological, etc., which …

Popular Terroir: Bande Dessinée As Pastoral Ecocriticism?, Margaret C. Flinn Dec 2018

Popular Terroir: Bande Dessinée As Pastoral Ecocriticism?, Margaret C. Flinn

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article analyses a corpus of French comic books (including series and one-shots) published since 2010 that share a thematic focus on agriculture. I argue that this mini-explosion in French comics publishing that crosses various generic and reading public boundaries can be viewed as a contemporary iteration of the pastoral. This ever-expanding body of texts is guided by ecocritical preoccupations, through their engagement with terroir. Because of the cultural connotations of terroir in modern and contemporary France, these comics are situated at the intersection of environmentally progressive and culturally conservative discourses.

Special Focus Introduction: Conceptualizing An Engaged Pastoral In Contemporary French And Francophone Literature, Melinda A. Cro, Rachel Paparone Dec 2018

Special Focus Introduction: Conceptualizing An Engaged Pastoral In Contemporary French And Francophone Literature, Melinda A. Cro, Rachel Paparone

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This special focus section seeks to examine and problematize contemporary pastoral works from the perspective of engagement. Despite assertions that the pastoral tends towards reductionism, the mode actually serves as a productive space wherein to examine issues like global warming, resource exploitation, and pollution. Through a range of texts and artistic projects, the authors of this section explore the nexus of engagement in contemporary pastoral production particularly with regard to the relationship between the human and the non-human.

Addressing Diversity And Difference In Contemporary Spanish Lesbian Literature: Reading Illy Nes’S El Lago Rosa And Cristina Cuesta’S “Zoe Y Haydee”, Megan Sheldon

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Illy Nes’s novel El lago rosa (The Pink Lake, 2004) and Cristina Cuesta’s short story “Zoe y Haydee” (Zoe and Haydee, 2007) depict travel and cross-cultural queer relationships that call attention to racial and class differences as well as ethnic and cultural divides. Both narratives raise questions concerning the representation of queer women of color in Spanish fiction of the new millennium. This article focuses on the diverse cultural, political and personal struggles that surround the formation and negotiation of sexual identity, emphasizing the fact that LGBTQ identity is not necessarily cross-culturally or universally constructed around identical interests, desires, or …

Clandestine Migration And The Politics Of Form In Nicole Caligaris’S Les Samothraces, Oana Sabo Jun 2018

Clandestine Migration And The Politics Of Form In Nicole Caligaris’S Les Samothraces, Oana Sabo

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article analyzes Nicole Caligaris’s Les Samothraces (2016), an experimental literary text about undocumented migration, in light of Theodor Adorno’s aesthetic reflection on the politics of literary form and Thomas Nail’s political theory of the migrant. Reading Les Samothraces against the grain, I argue that the text’s literary form encodes the political tensions of its contemporary moment, namely the tension between the free movement of migrants and Europe’s policing of its borders. Analysis of formal elements—literary characters, plot structure, and inclusion of photographs—that depict migrants who escape capture by regimes of surveillance shows that the text is an apology for …
