Anti-Rationalist Developments: Supernaturalism And The German Religious Awakening, Kevin M. Vander Schel Jul 2023

Anti-Rationalist Developments: Supernaturalism And The German Religious Awakening, Kevin M. Vander Schel

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

The emergence of post-Kantian theological rationalism in early-nineteenth-century German Protestantism ushered in a variety of novel theological approaches that sought to move beyond traditional presentations of doctrine to examine anew the rational and historical basis of religious faith. It also met with strong opposition from preachers and theologians, who rejected the accommodation with Enlightenment rationalism, defended the inescapably supernatural character of Christian revelation, and sought to reimagine the relation of Christian communities to the state and its civil and educational institutions. This chapter presents an inquiry into this opposition to theological rationalism, which proceeds in three parts. It explores: (1) …

Ekpen-N'Owa: Conceptualizing The Human-Animal Relationship In The Benin Peoples' Worldview, Itohan Idumwonyi Jan 2022

Ekpen-N'Owa: Conceptualizing The Human-Animal Relationship In The Benin Peoples' Worldview, Itohan Idumwonyi

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Animals are prominently ubiquitous in the Benin peoples' cosmologies. These philosophies associate animals with the transformation of the primordial chaos into a livable world, human beings, and the supernatural. In this context, specific animals are used in religious rituals to express the concepts of authority, supremacy, and nobility. Metaphorically speaking, the Oba (monarch) who rules over other monarchs is an Ekpen (leopard). Ekpen is an integral part of Benin's worldview and recurrently compares the Oba (ekpen-n'owa, the house-leopard personified) with the ekpenn'oha (wild leopard). Yet, studies in African Religion undermine the symbolic representation of the Oba as ekpen-n'owa. This article …

Beyond A Dance: The Resonance Of Ugie Ekaba As God's Conduit To "Play" With Humans, Itohan Idumwonyi

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Scholars map Benin’s (City, kingdom in present-day southern Nigeria) historical contours with its monarchy and royal arts as the subject of rich literature (Paula, G. Ben-Amos 1999, 178; Okpewho, Isidore 1998). Yet, the trajectory to advance Benin’s cultural history and arts is at the expense of the less acknowledged, under-represented, and under-studied aspect of the Benin people who live beyond the capital. This scholarly neglect does not promote the understanding and appreciation of the people’s religious tradition. Fascinatingly, these people constitute and share in the (city) kingdom’s language (dialect), culture, and religion. This qualitative research is interdisciplinary and primarily descriptive, …

Christ And The Perfection Of Creation In Schleiermacher's Dogmatic Theology, Kevin M. Vander Schel Jan 2017

Christ And The Perfection Of Creation In Schleiermacher's Dogmatic Theology, Kevin M. Vander Schel

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

To many of his critics, Schleiermacher’s Christology signals an explicit weakness in his theological system, as his emphasis on religious feeling and subjectivity seems to undermine any claims of the distinctive revelatory or supernatural character of Jesus Christ. This essay by contrast underscores both the originality Schleiermacher’s understanding of Christ in history and its centrality to his overall thought by attending to the subtle theme of the “supernatural-becoming-natural” in his Glaubenslehre and Christliche Sittenlehre. Here the appearance of Christ yields a transformative influence that operates within natural and historical processes, inaugurating the reign of God that does not abolish …

Jürgen Habermas On The (Non-)Translatability Of Religious Meaning, Kevin M. Vander Schel Jan 2016

Jürgen Habermas On The (Non-)Translatability Of Religious Meaning, Kevin M. Vander Schel

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between religious faith and public reason has occupied an increasingly central role in Jürgen Habermas’s mature work. Yet this recent engagement with questions of religious meaning also illuminates a significant area of development in Habermas’s thought. While his earlier writings emphasized a need to subordinate religious beliefs to rational critique and to translate religious truth claims into publicly accessible forms of reasoning, his later writings signal a shift to a more cooperative understanding of religious faith and critical reason that highlights the ongoing potential of religion to advance rational discourse and social criticism in the public sphere. This …

Election In Christ In Schleiermacher's Christian Faith And Christian Ethics, Kevin M. Vander Schel Jan 2015

Election In Christ In Schleiermacher's Christian Faith And Christian Ethics, Kevin M. Vander Schel

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Schleiermacher’s treatment of election criticizes the narrow focus on individual salvation and emphasizes the primacy of divine grace. Yet more than merely offering a revision of this controversial doctrine, Schleiermacher’s position illuminates the larger correlation of grace, history, and soteriology in his theology. This essay examines Schleiermacher’s novel understanding of grace and history by attending to the subtle theme of the “supernatural-becoming-natural” in his thought. In contrast to rationalist and supernaturalist theologies in his day, his Christian Faith and Christian Ethics offer a historically-minded treatment that focuses on the original instance of grace in history: the appearance of the redeemer. …
