Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman Dec 1965

Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman

Masters Theses

I. Religious Factors as a Cause of Revolution

Standard history books contain little or nothing of the documentary material which would relate religion to the factors contributing to the American Revolution. References to social, political, and economic causations abound, but only occasional statements concerning the influence of religion are found, and among these the role of the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Quaker persuasions receives most attention. Yet the involvement of the evangelical churches was significant enough to merit separate, intensive studies. It is the object of this essay to investigate the involvement of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist groups in …

Congressional Career Of Cordell Hull, Joseph Leland Johnson Aug 1965

Congressional Career Of Cordell Hull, Joseph Leland Johnson

Masters Theses

Preface: During the summer of 1963, under the direction of Dr. Stanley J. Folmsbee, Professor of History at The University of Tennessee, I prepared a short paper on an early period of Cordell Hull's congressional career. This study was fascinating. It appeared to me that many students who know a great deal about Hull's secretaryship under President Roosevelt are unaware of his preparation for this high position. Thus, during the latter part of the summer after a trip to Hull's hometown, Carthage, Tennessee, it was concluded that a thesis on the congressional career of Cordell Hull would prove a valuable …

A. O. P. Nicholson Of Tennessee: Editor, Statesman, And Jurist, Patricia P. Clark Aug 1965

A. O. P. Nicholson Of Tennessee: Editor, Statesman, And Jurist, Patricia P. Clark

Masters Theses

Preface: Tennessee has had its share of notable sons, most of whom have found their Boswell and had their deeds and contributions duly recorded. A striking exception is A. O. P. Nicholson. State legislator, U. S. senator, and state chief justice, as well as the holder of numerous minor posts, Nicholson has never rated even a scholarly monograph. Although he may be an apt subject for a biography, the primary emphasis in this study is on the political aspects of his career, with some attention to his role as editor and jurist. Since time and space do not permit, his …

Banesism And Molinism In Theory And Practice, Rev. Burns K. Seeley Jul 1965

Banesism And Molinism In Theory And Practice, Rev. Burns K. Seeley

Masters Theses

Last paragraph of Introduction:

The purpose of this paper is to acquire a better understanding of the relationship between grace and tree will, that is, the paradox between the omnipotence of God and human free will. More specifically speaking, this paper will deal with two historical approaches to the problem, namely, Baneziem and Molinism. At the onset we shall learn something about Domingo Banez, O.P. and Luis de Molina, S.J. who were largely responsible for the systems which bear their names. We shall then learn something or the historical circumstances which produced Banezism and Molinism and also some or the …

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker Jul 1965

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker

Masters Theses

Introduction

For years Great Britain had followed the time-honored doctrine in foreign affairs of maintaining the balance of power which meant

to resist by diplomacy or arms the growth of any European State at once so formidable and so potentially hostile as to threaten our national liberties, the security of our shores, the safety of our commerce or the integrity of our foreign possessions.

With the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and the establishment of the Metternichian concept of the concert of Europe, Britain's historic determination to preserve the balance of power gave way to a new attitude in foreign …

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman Jun 1965

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman

Masters Theses

Preface

This paper shall describe and analyze United States' policy towards Korea from 1834, when American attention was first attracted to that country because of possible trade opportunities, to 1954, which saw the completion of the Geneva Conference on Korea. Throughout this period American policy was neither static, nor was it ever well defined. During this span of one hundred and twenty years American policy in Korea falls logically into two main periods:

i) the initial period from 1834 to 1943 during which time America's primary concern was the establishment and maintenance of the "Open Door" policy;

and ii) the …

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather Jun 1965

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather

Masters Theses

Introduction

The focus of this study has derived, in part, from the experience of teaching a course in "The History of Social Thought" to undergraduate sociology majors. The more comprehensive texts in the field accord Dante some notice. But the treatment he receives as a social thinker is uniformly patronizing. One of the most substantial and adequate of these texts, for example -- the three-volume study by Howard Becker and Harry Elmer Barnes-- has this to say:

The key to Dante's character and to his social theory as well is to be found in the fact that "world peace was …

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman Jun 1965

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Panama Canal is one of the major commercial waterways of the world and, furthermore, it is vital to the defence of the United States. ·Before this canal could be constructed, it was necessary to persuade the British government to give up its right to share with the United States the building of an isthmian canal. The Clayton-Bulwer treaty of 1850 had provided that neither the United States nor Great Britain would carry out the project singly. Later through the Hay-Pauncefote treaty Great Britain agreed to abrogate the Clayton-Bulwer treaty and allowed the United States alone to build and …

United States Dollar Diplomacy In China During The Taft Administration, In Suk Ro May 1965

United States Dollar Diplomacy In China During The Taft Administration, In Suk Ro

Masters Theses

I. Introduction

The fundamental aims of a nation's foreign policies are national security and the achievement of national objectives through diplomacy. At different periods in American history, the foreign policy of the United States has been designed to advance a variety of aims. It is possible, for example, to speak of missionary diplomacy, moral diplomacy, military diplomacy and dollar diplomacy. The latter characterizes one phase of economic foreign policy in which the administration of President William Howard Taft represents a dramatic turning point. The foreign aid programs of the period after World War II, such as the Marshall plan and …
