Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

As one of the leading female authors of the Latin American literature, Cristina Peri Rossi has produced a large collection of works including more than 40 published novels, essays, and short story and poetry collections. Her literature is known for addressing various topics such as political and social injustices, love, passion, feminism, sexuality, and gender studies. As an exile in Spain, Peri Rossi also offers an interesting blend of the two Spanish-speaking worlds. Although many other authors speak of the same issues, Peri Rossi provides a very unique insight into both cultures that cannot be seen elsewhere: an insight of …

The Israeli Armored Paradigm In The Yom Kippur War: An Evaluation, Joseph C. Leonhardt Dec 2010

The Israeli Armored Paradigm In The Yom Kippur War: An Evaluation, Joseph C. Leonhardt

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Yom Kippur War of 1973 saw Israel suffer nearly twice the casualties and triple the duration of the previous war. This is in contradiction to the fact that Israel, following its spectacular success in the Six-Day War of 1967, was in a far better position than it had been in 1967. This work will analyze the problem of Armor preeminence in the Israeli Defense Force first to prove the existence of preeminence, then to qualify its effect in the war and then to qualify its importance in the differing factors between the 1967 and 1973 Wars. This will be …

Cognitive Processes Of Surrealist Poetry In Light Of Hegel & Insomniac Trials, Edward T. Rogers

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis project pursues the stylistic nature of Surrealist writing and provides deeper understanding into how one may interpret Surrealist poetry. My work consists of two written components: an analytical essay concerning how Hegelian philosophy is applicable to the understanding and interpretation of Surrealist expression and a collection of original Surrealist poems titled “Insomnia Trials.” My essay introduces Surrealism then further discusses the processes of Surrealist writing by analyzing the Hegelian dialectic and demonstrating how it corresponds to the interpretation and manifestation of Surrealist poetry. “Insomnia Trials” consists of 16 poems that are divided into two sections, a section of …

Learning To Talk To An Other: Stories And Thoughts On Community Organizing In A Divided Nation, Greg James Capillo Jan 2010

Learning To Talk To An Other: Stories And Thoughts On Community Organizing In A Divided Nation, Greg James Capillo

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Unlike other fields of philosophy, we cannot simply agree to disagree about morality as practiced in politics. At some point, our moral values become policies that those who may not share those values must follow. The way we construct these disagreements and agreements then are vital to the continued functionality of our nation. In this essay, I will examine how John Rawls, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Jeffrey Stout construct the concept of justice and apply their thoughts to the dispute surrounding mountain top removal coal mining in Eastern Kentucky. John Rawls believes in a universally applicable, rationally generated form of justice. …

Tops Off To Dancing: An Exotic Form Of Nightlife, Jessica Sanspree Jan 2010

Tops Off To Dancing: An Exotic Form Of Nightlife, Jessica Sanspree

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This ethnographic research investigates the culture of exotic dancing in two exotic dance clubs in Bowling Green, Kentucky. By conducting interviews with a former exotic dancer and completing ethnographic observations in the field of an exotic dance club, I explore how exotic dancers in Bowling Green create and perform sexuality as a method of making money. I examine the rules and regulations, such as "Dancer's etiquette," established and enforced by dancers in order to enforce social order. Furthermore, I assess my informant's perception of identity regarding her role as an exotic dancer, including her reaction to the negative stigmas that …

Costume Design And Dramaturgical Analysis Of The House Of Bernarda Alba By Frederico Garcia Lorca, Geneva Ged

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis is a dramaturgical analysis of The House of Bernarda Alba, by Frederico Garcia Lorca, and a reflection upon the costume design, by the designer, in Western Kentucky University's production of the play. By examining the biography of the author and the culture surrounding the play, the themes of The House of Bernarda Alba and the effect of the themes upon the design process are explained. As well, in-depth character analysis is used to show the relation between characters and their costumes. The reflection upon the design process further illuminates how a dramaturgical analysis can be a vital tool …

To Live And Die In Dixie: Robert E. Lee And Confederate Nationalism, Jacob A. Glover Jan 2010

To Live And Die In Dixie: Robert E. Lee And Confederate Nationalism, Jacob A. Glover

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Robert E. Lee is undeniably one of the most revered figures in American history, and yet despite the adoration awarded to the man over the years, surprisingly little scholarly research has dedicated itself to an inquiry into his nationalistic leanings during the four most important years of his life—the Civil War. In fact, Lee was a dedicated Confederate nationalist during his time in service to the Confederacy, and he remained so for the rest of his life, even after his surrender at Appomattox and the taking of an oath to regain his United States citizenship. Lee identified strongly with a …

The Changes In Irish Dance Since Riverdance, Angelika Masero Jan 2010

The Changes In Irish Dance Since Riverdance, Angelika Masero

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

During the past 15 years, traditional Irish step dance experienced dramatic changes. As a traditional dance form, Irish step dance lends itself to and is dependent upon innovation and change; it is a living and flexible art form, and thus, change is expected and necessary to keep it novel, fresh and progressive. However, its “traditional” signature is now a focus of debate as its “modern” signature gets explored and as traditional Irish dance scholars study the impact touring Irish dance shows have caused. The seven-minute interval act Riverdance during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest ignited the debate. Moreover, the rate …

Roads To The Great Eucatastrophie: The Christian Mythology Of C.S. Lewis And J.R.R. Tolkien, Laura Ann Hess

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien created mythology that is fundamentally Christian but in vastly different ways. This task will be accomplished by examining the childhood and early adult life of both Lewis and Tolkien, as well as the effect their close friendship had on their writing, and by performing a detailed literary analysis of some of their mythological works. After an introduction, the second and third chapters will scrutinize the elements of their childhood and adolescence that shaped their later mythology. The next chapter will look at the importance of their …

Forum Theatre Empowering Students To Speak, Act, And Know, Kaitlen M. Osburn Jan 2010

Forum Theatre Empowering Students To Speak, Act, And Know, Kaitlen M. Osburn

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

During the political turmoil of 1960s Brazil, theatre artist Augusto Boal created a new form of theatre to fight back against the oppressive government. Theatre of the Oppressed has now spread to almost every country in the world and has empowered many spect-actors (Boal‘s term for audience-turned-actors) to resist oppression. Boal‘s seminal text Theatre of the Oppressed opened the door to future expansions of Theatre of the Oppressed that combine drama therapy and politics with an already powerful arsenal of techniques. Combining this innovative methodology with education, I facilitated two Forum Theatre workshops at Warren Central High School and Warren …

J. Graham Brown School, Jessie Magee

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Couches. Creativity. Teachers. Thinkers. Call it the Hippie School. Or call it the Brown School – a self-directed learning magnet school in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Since 1972, the J. Graham Brown School has educated children from elementary through high school beyond the traditional education model to face the world with a different perspective from the norm: one of acceptance, of the individual, of the cohesion of our differences. Students mentor each other and form open, real relationships with teachers to develop a unique, whole understanding of the world – all the while trying to shed the image of a school …

Acquisition And Solidifcation Of Grammar And Vocabulary In Elementary French Classrooms Through Skit Performance, Jill Owen Jan 2010

Acquisition And Solidifcation Of Grammar And Vocabulary In Elementary French Classrooms Through Skit Performance, Jill Owen

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In this study, groups of elementary French students in two classes at Western Kentucky University utilized two different methods of skit performance to demonstrate the importance of communicative activities in the foreign language classroom. The effectiveness of each method was assessed to determine which method helped the students acquire grammar and vocabulary concepts more readily. One method was to have students write their own skits using a chapter in their textbook. The other method was to give students an outline that they filled in and memorized. Surveys and quizzes were used to gather data. The results of which method proved …

"Is Kentucky A Southern State?", Leah Dale Pritchett Jan 2010

"Is Kentucky A Southern State?", Leah Dale Pritchett

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

his paper explores the cultural identity of Kentucky. Many people have asked, “Is Kentucky as Southern State?” Being the borderland between the North and the South, the Commonwealth has been viewed as Southern, as part of the Midwest, and something completely unique. To define Kentucky as Southern, I have examined the literary works of different regional authors. Looking at the character traits those authors have relegated to their manufactured people, I have decided, from the evidence provided, whether that author considers his or her setting as part of the South. One can tell whether the author identifies with the South …

Henry Hardin Cherry: The Early Period Of A Life's Work, Kevin T. Smiley Jan 2010

Henry Hardin Cherry: The Early Period Of A Life's Work, Kevin T. Smiley

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The first fifty years of Henry Hardin Cherry show a very formative period of his life. Born in 1864, Cherry left his family farm at the age of 21 to pursue his own education and by 1892 become head of a school in Bowling Green that was in trouble financially and and also had a shrinking enrollment. He began the transformation of this school and it became his life's work. This work included keeping the Southern Normal School afloat in its assorted difficulties, getting the school installed as a state-supported normal school and gaining adequate funding from the state to …

The Corporeal Idea, Brian A. Shaw Jan 2010

The Corporeal Idea, Brian A. Shaw

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The act of transforming the ever elusive idea to the glorified art that appears on the “silver screen” is neither glamorous nor easy. I find the process often misrepresented in the eyes of the common viewer, and until the last four years of my undergraduate career, I saw through those same skewed eyes. The art of filmmaking is in its very essence a battle of wills and a test of endurance. It takes more than a great idea to breathe life into a project. It takes perseverance, preparation, cooperation, and most of all, a lot of luck! My experiences as …
